I've got alot of respect for a commission based salesman putting saftey before a sale. Tip of the cap to you sir!
Ya theres no way that 5500 could handle towing a 5th wheel. A 2500 or 3500 is much better equipped to handle that weight.
@@georgebenway2898 yeah how so?
Almost like DOT wants us to buy more trucks.
I gotta give props to the salesperson Greg, who gave up a sale because it was a poor fit for the customer. That shows a lot of integrity, and is the sign of a top tier salesperson you can trust. Good on you sir, thank you for taking the time to show of this really cool vehicle, hope you get a couple of sales for your troubles.
A good salesman!
The Ramm 5500 has a much higher GCWR
Sean Mather < A hood salesperson? Sound like you got suckered.
It's funny how that works. I've found that the fleet guys are so much better than the regular sales droids. Generally honest without the usual razzle dazzle BS.
I guess you missed the comment of "TexDOT." The dealer can't sell the vehicle.
Wish I had a clamshell hood on my f150 to better facilitate my annual turbo replacement activities.
ford dealer replaced my 1st turbo at 41k, now at 50k and 5 turbos later I'm not sure they are installing them correctly. but it's warranty work sooo.......
I was really surprised at what you found out! What a great sales guy! An honest sales guy! Imagine that!!!!
That would make a great welding rig
This truck would be perfect for a truck camper. Especially if you wanted to tow a boat !
This is exactly what I am looking for in 4x4. 2k lb sxs on bed and bumper pull 20 ft travel trailer. Thanks! Can't wait for next vid!
Seems a bit extreme for your needs
Looks like you want a mechanically injected deuce and a half and way cheaper
My friend has one of these it is amazing and it catches the eye of people because they think they have money bc it is a great truck
Absolutely a beautiful GM truck. Love the flip up hood to check fluids, belts etc.
This is why i want a 4500 vs 2500/3500. Serviceability
Kudos to the salesman for his honest approach.
One thing not mentioned, this is actually built by International, not Chevrolet. And.... The Nexus Rebel motorhome is built on this platform in 4x4. The International version is known as the CV series.
True. I saw the international badged version of this truck a few weeks ago, was surprised.
It's a mut part Navistar part GM
Nice looking truck. That’s why I voted for it. I’ve seen one of these with the largest available truck camper mounted on a bed like that with side compartments built up higher on each side which gives you plenty of storage. When you take your camper off you still have a great work truck.
Truck camper was my first thought when he mentioned higher payload vs towing capability.
Learned a lot from this video - Thanks for that!
I owned a 2006 GMC 5500 with the 8.1 liter Big Block Chevy. 488 cu in. It was used on a Gulfstream Super C and was a great chassis! 5 speed Allison back then. 8.75 mpg. 19K GVWR. 25,000 GCWR. It had the clam shell hood too but no safety catch on it back then. It was the Kodiak chassis.
Great to see a review on a new and good sized rv hauler. Can you do a review on the IHCV Series. It looks very similar. Keep up the good work.
Great looking truck. Would love to get one outfitted with the Stable Camper truck bed kit and a Host Mammoth triple slide.
So if you were adding a big ambulance like box to the back to create your own living quarters this would be good.
That is a beast of a truck, but I'm still a Ram guy. 😉
Extremely cool truck! It looks mean with a sexy hood!!!
Love the 4x4s. Still blows me away they used the smaller last gen cabs.
I owned a 2008 Jayco Seneca class C on the c5500 Kodiak chassis (duramax). These medium duty trucks were a huge compromise between capability and comfort. Compared to a pickup of the same year these beasts suffered from horrendous road noise and the massive cooling fan howl. The front leaf springs made you feel every imperfection on the road. I found myself envious every time I looked down on someone towing a fifth wheel/ travel trailer in their nice smooth and quiet 2500/3500.
Looks like the previous gen Silverado. Same interior as the 2018 1500 I had. All that being said it still a sweet looking truck.
I was like hey I recognize that skyline!
BEAUTIFUL RIDE !!!
Man I love it one gorgeous unit
I love the look of the international version
Freight liner MR2 chasis trucks crew cabs I hear can do some major hauling
Awesome informative Video experience Y'alls God Bless Ya 🙌🙏
Very informative. Thank you
Nice review and truck . Side note, the def fillers at truck stops are on the driver's side. Buying in bulk is much cheaper. Air ride would be the way to go for sure.
I think you can haul up to 20 grand behind it , Chevy increased the towing numbers this year ,the shorter wheel base would probably have a higher number. Also you can get several different HD Allison transmissions , 2000 and 3000 series .
I saw a thing from Chevrolet about increasing the GVWR on the medium duty trucks at one point. The 6500HD was going to be like 40,000 pounds or so to maximize towing.
Well these are the kind of videos I like to see different typ of Diesel trucks & I'm not a Chevy fan at all but it was nice to see what that truck is about
Very nice truck. I like that you can easy swap out the interior for a High Country or LTZ interior from a 2015.5- 2018 and be right at home with all the comforts, heated cooled seats, full center console, heated steering wheel, etc.
Also going this route, don't get the airbags but contact Liquid Spring and get a better suited rear suspension with better adjustability, ride quality and reliability of the system.
uh... if the def is on the other side it becomes problematic when filling def at the larger truck stops in some cases.
They do that for the amateurs. On the 3500 the filler is under hood
Funny thing is in the last week or so I have seen like maybe 3 or 4 of those medium duty chevy trucks (5500+)
Maybe it just noticing them more since seeing your poll. I have never really noticed one before seeing your post.
Awe cute, a little truck!!!. Us truckers call those "Training wheels"
Man- Chevy needs to make a 4500/5500/6500 FOR the towing crowd. Because we all know, bigger is always better for these big 5th wheel people. Side note, the salesman is awesome! What a great guy, I have written the dealership name down and will keep it in mind as I am moving to TX :)
Great info. Thanks!!
Beautiful 🤩
I love ❤️ trucks 🛻 thanks!
That DEF tank on the right side is going to piss a lot of people off. Unless you are using jugs to fill it, its on the wrong side for where truck stops put the DEF pumps, which are on the drivers side.
I looked at a Chevy 3500 a while back. It was powered by the Duramax and the DEF fill tube was under the hood of the truck. Very inconvenient since you almost need a small stepladder to get up to it so you can use the hose. If you are using a jug, you would need the ladder. My wife would never fill it; she's very short (4'11 3/4")
I like it under the hood. The hose is long enough to put in the hole before dumping it in. Then I just tip it over and let it fill it up and I don't have to carry the 20lb jug again till it's empty. My Ford sucks for that because I have to hold the jug the whole time.
this would be perfect for one of those truck bed campers.
If I was going to pull a big 5th wheel, I would get an old school Peterbuilt and modify it to suit my needs.
I have a 6500 4x4 that I spec'd out with everything I could, had the dealer pull the seats and have them redone in leather. Have been pleased with it so far! High ratio 6th gear, I've been getting considerably better mileage than the 550 used for work.
HI! Hows the chevy holding up? any problems or breakdowns? how many miles you got now?
@markdavidcasino4876 I have 40k on it. Had a fuel go out twice first one under warranty and the 2nd one they didn't want to warranty but they found the tank vent hose was plugged with gravel dust, *I drive along of gravel as a beekeeper* but they ended up covering it since that's no where stated as a maintenance point. Anyway the truck I have is the longest wheel base possible at 235" 120" CA 15' flatbed Ford and dodge don't offer a 120 in a crew cab. That layout is the only way I'd recommend the Chevy. However, if you are looking at the 12 flatbed' crew cab size trucks. I would 100% pick the f4-550 due to the ride and by far far, the turning radius. Any other questions just reply here.
@@beeguy2127 awesome! And only had problems with fuelp pump? What were the symptoms when they went out? What mileage did they go out? How long did Chevy diagnose the problem to having it fixed for you both times?
@markdavidcasino4876 they did an under warranty rebuild on the front axle. It always kinda had a little whine when it was locked in, did since it was new so I didn't care much since it still functions. Just when it was in for the fuel pump I told them about it. As far as symptoms of the fuel pump, I kinda determined that myself, grew up in mechanics/diy everything . Would sputter and stall once in a while. Tank cap would suck air in when I opened it and it was under half full. Changed fuel filters still no avail. Both times I got free towing from gm roadside, one on the hwy, one at my farm. Between the engine codes and the tank being sucked in, diagnosis on their end and fixing was relatively quick. 3-4 days since it wasn't anything too odd.
@markdavidcasino4876 one at about 28k and the other about 35k mainly since I don't drive it much in the winter and kept it full, the vent tube wasn't much issue with intermittent use. Summer time and burning full tanks quite often I think stressed the fuel pump due to the vacuum it was pulling since the ta k wasn't breathing.
I want a 4500 highcountry. Ill buy that on the spot.
Perfect truck for a bed camper. Envision an Earthroamer style custom shell on this beast...and only 55k?
If the hood wasn't so tall, I would be inclined to look at it since part of my usage for a truck is to haul my truck camper. I also tow a 16' utility trailer or my 5er. My Jeep Wrangler rides the trailer
@@Harry-zz2oh I think after 3 weeks you wouldn’t notice ...might seem normal too. I’m just amazed by the price....about the same price as a 1/2 ton.
Need 4x4 with Truckcamper.... it would end up tall as a fifth wheel ..... but because size of the bed you can get a pass through box bed behind cab ..... thats a plus.
@@MALNTV I wouldn't notice so much but my wife would. She is only 4'11¾" tall and already has issues with 'tall' hoods. Even her Jeep gives her troubles. Admittedly, she doesn't drive my truck very often but when she does it is due to my not being able to drive.
@@MALNTV halftone really don’t cost that much, they’re $15-20k off msrp here. I looked at a 2021 Silverado for $40k msrp yesterday and they offered it to me for $26k the door without me even being remotely interested. Not a base model either.
The biggest reason why I opted for getting our 2007 Jayco Seneca 35gs Duramax pre-def.
In my experience it's similar in Ford also. A F550 doesn't tow nearly as much as well as a F350. The F450 is made to tow. The F550 is made for a service bed type truck such as a wrecker, dump, or utility bed.
I've been looking at the 5500's for awhile now. I really want one
Just keep in mind the turning radius suck
@@vatoguanajuato3892 you ain't telling me anything new. I'm a mechanic at a Ford dealer. I've driven everything from a fiesta to F750.
@@90jhhrocky alright. It’s just that a lot of people think this new Chevys have a good turning radios and they not
Bravo to the salesman!! Standup dealership if there ever was one.
I was really hoping for more.
its about time this truck is miles ahead of my 08 4500 POS
van cab having, parts discontinued, chuck wagon riding dumpster.
Per a gm engineer at there release of these trucks stated its the Allison trans as to why the GCVW is lower. Meaning if you have a 23k gross truck and 40k trailer rating you’re over what the allison will physically handle. The truck will handle it but kill the transmission so they limit GCVR. . They are designed for higher GVWR as most companies use them for I wish gm or IH would make a 4500/5500 with max tow and limit Gross weight to make the numbers work for towing.
I love your channel but you act like everyone is rich I'm still a fan and you have much knowledge and love to help people 🙂
I have a 2021 f550 lariat with cooling seats if you wanna do a review of it. It’s a crew cab with the 4.88
it would be great for a big slide in truck camper with storage on the side of the bed
Time to walk off the lot. M2 or HDT is the way to go 🤘
Kenworth and Peterbilt just debuted a totally redesigned line of medium duty trucks that definitely worth looking at. In my opinion the Freightliner M2 chassis especially the sport chassis are way overpriced for what you get.
Thats my dream truck, id daily it
Awesome truck
1st use I've seen one on the road was as a flatbead wrecker
2023 some models will have a 37,000 GCWR. These trucks make great 'Super C' motohome chassis.
Nice truck - 4x4 would be a beast.
You can most definitely pull a camper with that provided you have a cdl. The gcvwr being over 26,000 pounds makes that a requirement. Not that the truck can’t handle it.
That only applies if you are using it commercially. If not for hire then you don’t need cdl
I'd like to own one but with a pickup bed
I want one so i can load 2 atvs on the bed and tow my 25' travel trailer + extra water, coolers etc
How does the tow rating compare to a 3500 dually? If it isn't too much different it might still be worth the upgrade just for some of the features... I love the way the hood opens for sure!
I think you should look at this again! The new Max GCWR is up to 37,000lbs.
I love that isuzu engine! Japanese!
I am around horse events where a lot of Freightliners and a few other MD trucks show up. Many of the ones driving those trade back to Ford 550 and Ram 5500 because the stepped up size creates problems for maneuverability. Same for friends with businesses where they have employees driving trucks into neighborhoods and doing construction projects requiring backing close to homes. Ford and Ram have reasons for the scale of their trucks. This truck is likely less a competitor to those trucks as it is to a Hino or Freightliner. International assembles this and sells its twin with badges changed
Thank you for the video. I am a Chevy/GMC truck person and was looking into getting one of these for my Hotshot business and to also tow a 42' toy hauler. I guess I have to start considering a Ford or Ram. GM drops the ball again. I agree with Gordon, not to many auto sales vultures would have done this. If I lived in Texas, I would definitely give that dealership a shot for my business.
I tow 30k behind my f550 and it tows awesome
Business class Freightliner......... that’s what ya need.
I spotted the Aggie ring👀 gig’em 20’ 👍🏻
The frame goes all of the way from the front to the back! 😃
Most frames do... lol
I think he was trying to make a point that it was a straight frame from front to back.
@@bpaul1201awesome Oh I know, I was just making a joke out of it
Yeah but what if you are looking at putting a truck camper on it like an Eagle Cap 1165 / 1200 or a Lance 1172 ? Most 350/3500’s have to have upgraded suspensions in order to accommodate the payload for those larger truck campers. That’s where these trucks shine I think in the RV community.
That weight rating limitation, is that because of drivers licenses? I have my cdl-a, and wouldn't be limited to Maryland's 26k...
I have a 2019 5500 and I run it hotshot. My combined weight rating is 40k lbs. I could have rated it up to just under 45k but I don't have a reason to go that heavy. The truck has zero issues hauling that weight and I've put 150k on it. GM is just being stupid for some reason because it's more than capable of handing that load.
The problem with these trucks is not the truck but GM locking the ECU's down so you can't work on them and they have limited dealerships who are approved to work on the MD trucks. Meaning if you break down it's a 4 week wait to get into a dealership. Also "GM decided that rear shocks are "optional" so you have to special order rear shocks if you want them and yes this truck will beat the hell out of you. If I were to buy another I'd only buy the 6500 with the rear air shocks
Very cool
Most of those are probably chassis cabs. Then sent to an up fitter for a dump body.
You should take a look at the f750 then! pretty sure their tractor model have a gvwr of 50,000lbd
That would be great for a camper top
Good one.
I personally have never considered buying a Chevy truck but that hood configuration is a huge selling point for me. I can only dream of having that kind of access to my engine compartment with my RAM 2500. I think these truck manufacturers underestimate the value of ease of maintenance especially since owners of these trucks tend to maintain them themselves whenever possible. If you make a truck easier to work on, it will help breed brand loyalty.
Great platform for a Super C
RIP Chevy Kodiak circa 2009. Kodiaks where forever will be the coolest thing to come out of GM
The truck is a joint venture between GM and International Truck. Duramax engine, GM electronics built on an International chassis. If you are going to buy one consider the International truck folks who know more about built a medium truck spec rather than a car dealer. The truck is available with a 25 gallon, 40 gallon or dual 40/25 fuel tanks and an additional factory fuel tank cannot be added once the truck is built.
I bought a crew cab long box3500hd dually 4wd. Wife asked why so big. I told dogs, luggage and I cannot tell her the trailer she wants is too big.
What!! an honest salesman?
I find it kind of funny that this truck is using a cab from the previous generation of GM HD's in addition to headlights from two prior generations. You would think it would somewhat mimic their current generation of HD truck's.🤷
Could you spec it with a higher gross vehicle weight rating. Just looked at f650 specs combined vehicle weight rating up to 50,000 lbs
Awesome
Damn nice truck. I’m interested in seeing how it drives empty.
Wow, you imagine having to fill DEF on a crowded fuel stop at the bulk pump, whoever decided that have never been on a truck stop for what i can tell, by that fill being in the opposite side? What about putting the thing on driver side or better just put attention while filling the truck, I normally dont coment stuff like this but aeems like they need to hire smarter people to fill this trucks and also to design them, and have people that actually use the vehicles instead of a person that only sits behind a desk
Just took a look at the GM website and they show various CGWR up to 35000 lbs. Yes they do not rate it for Convential Trailer Towing - which is usuallly a bumper pull - they also don't rate it for gooseneck or fifth wheel towing either.
Basically they don't want to cut into their 3500/2500 sales
They just told ya right there then. They don't bother with the tow ratings on these because they don't sell them with hitches and cant attest to the safety of any towing weight rating on hitches that get installed after the truck is built.
I'm curious about this truck vs the gas. I'm thinking of going back to gas.
It's a top kick
The F550 high capacity trailer tow package increases gcw from 32k to 40k.
You should go look at the fords.
I look at Fords all of the time and they are usually broke down on the side of the highway
It would pull good. The ratings are dumb. You just need a cdl
Fact
I dont realistically see someone buying this just to tow an RV unless they have the means to leave it as a dedicated tow vehicle. Driving that thing unloaded is just to awkward & rough riding. I think any dually pickup truck is more than enough and is alright for driving empty
