In Dutch we use a proverb; Honesty lasts longest. If you are an honest salesperson, customers will return and you will be better because of it.
Unfortunately in the car biz it's a numbers game, one month a hero one month a zero, too many zeros and you're set loose.
@@chadsteele1 It’s sick but true
JD, one application that might be incredible for that truck is to build an overlander camper on top of it. Yeah, now THAT would be cool!
That wheelbase would not go very far off road
@@tjh7797 Have you seen some of the big overland rigs? There are large monster overland rigs that go just about anywhere
@@bpaul1201awesome I've always wondered how they would do in the woods on the tight forest service roads. (Washington state, PNW)
Guys do it with the xlt f550. They are 500,000 usd.
I can appreciate an honest salesperson. I would recommend that dealership for my next truck.
If you find an honest salesperson let me know, he will be glad you buy the truck for $25K more.
If only RV dealerships were as knowledgeable as Greg in terms of what is the best truck to tow a particular RV with.
Lmao right RV sales men are like oh yeah your half ton will tow that 22000 thousand pound toy hauler no problem just make sure you get one of are handy dandy weight distribution hitch🤣🤣🤣🤣
They are. They are just trying to sell you an RV.nel
No, I think Greg just wants to be able to sell the fanciest decked out chassis system to someone without a Class A DL or there is much more profit in a $100K all frills 3500 dually.
Haylett RV, Coldwater Michigan
Too many RV Salesperson has no Idea about GVW GCW . Many RV fifth wheel 3/4 and 1 ton trucks are over loaded
Damn! An honest car salesman. I know one thing. When I'm ready to purchase my next H/D truck I know where I'll be going to get it and I'm a thousand miles from Houston.
From what I could find online, if you get one of these with the 4.88 rear diff gearing as well as the 1750/2750 Allison, you can get as high as 35k/37k GCWR which leaves plenty of room for towing I should think.
Is this a class 8 truck?
@@dangerdylan5005 Nope, class 4 through 6, MDT
Me I would go with a total 13sp Eaton trans and 2 speed rear end have a 26 gear truck with 673/373 ratios lil to no hp/tq needed then. Just shifting a lot.
@@dangerdylan5005 4500 is class 4, 5500 is class 5 6500 is class 6. Your highway semi trucks rigged for 80,000 are class 8.
A under 10,000 pound truck and a 20,000 pound trailer leaves room for a 4 wheel drive which maxes at 34,000. texas has the over 26001 law that affects peoples minds also.
Seriously one of the most honest dealerships a buyer could walk into.
I would definitely buy there if I was closer. They definitely did well hosting this video series. AND why they are soo successful already
I appreciate the Honesty when he was talking about towing, especially because it deals with Safety. Thanks. Good job.

Let Greg Talk.
He knows his stuff.
Agreed; let him talk.
I have the 3500hd and it just got back from 2 weeks around the grand canyon and it didn't miss a lick. I only have a 32ft but it could handle allot more.
I've got a hotshot service going. And my eyes are locked on that badass DMax. I'm using '13 duramax 2500hd. Owned from day one with 75 miles....it has 220k on the counter and no problems at all. YEAH...I definitely "NEED" this truck!!!!
This would pull my 10200lb 5th wheel perfectly! Im falling in love
Nothing better than an honest and knowledgeable sales person!! My experience has been you better have done your homework first cause most just want to sell a vehicle!!!
If I was a chevy guy...I would buy from him. Nice vid.
That salesman understands his product!
Product knowledge is very important when it comes to vehicles that are spec'd to perform a task. Medium and heavy duty trucks are true work trucks. Kudos to that Dealership
Good to see the Knapheide product. Worked there for 40 + years.
nice landscaping shout out! lol! great video :) good information
Awesome looking Chevrolet Silverado medium duty truck that's fitted with a flatbed that has skirts also utility boxes
Just love the honesty of the salesman !!!!!!!!!
That saw body is cool, used to haul concrete saws to cut slabs and core machines super nice set up.
Completely disagree as GCWR is not the end all be all in towing. I have a Chevy 5500 4X4 I bought from Knapp! I actually met Greg but he was not my salesman. My experience with Knapp was awful and I won’t be shopping there again due to constant multi month screw up between Knapp, their upfitter, and CM getting the specific CM Bed I ordered for my truck.
That aside the Chevy 5500 is an awesome tow vehicle. Yes is the GCWR of the 5500 is slightly less than the 3500. With the 19.5K GVWR and 4.3 axles in the 4X4 you get 34K tow rating. Full of 60 gals diesel, 100 gal skid tank full of diesel, all of my boomers, tie downs, back seat full of tools, and me it weighs ~ 12,250 lbs. I pull a 44 ft triple axle (7K each = 21,000 lb total rating) enclosed car hauler type trailer that is 13 ft tall with mine. With the 19.5 GVWR rating I could care less what my pin weight is or how the trailer is loaded. The big difference....compared to a 3500 with its slightly higher “tow rating” at full load I never feel like the trailer is to much and the big brakes + truck weight make stopping reasonable.
Now if you want a truck that rides good unloaded this is not the truck for you. It will throw you the windshield on the slightest bump.
International is using this exact chassis and cab for their CV models. We outfitted one to be a shed hauler with an aluminium flatbed/gooseneck.
international builds em a few miles from my house, they get hauled by my place at least once a week
'
You showed a dozen trucks but you answered about 100 questions thank you
Honesty is the main key ingredient to a huge successfully business. I saw businesses huge businesses who started messing with Clients "under new administration" and then fall
Great video. So much useful information. Thanks for a really useful video. Looks like a great dealership.
After watching your HDT video and now these, the HDT is a better purchase option because you'll probably never drive it into the ground or wreck brakes and other stuff that easily wears out on smaller vehicles.
Reg-cab chasis with a roadmaster sleeper and CM bed with boxes would make HOTSHOT money!!!
I grew up going to the lake in a slide in truck camper in the back of my Dads 79 F250. He would pull the boat behind it. Today’s Slide ins are massive, sticking way back past the bumper, making towing a boat while hauling the camper a pain. The 5500 seems like a great platform for mounting the biggest lance truck camper on the market while still having the GCWR headroom to pull a 21ft bass boat... and also not requiring goofy hitch extensions.
🤔
You can get campers with a flat floor that is not designed for a pickup bed and have more floor space also.
Just out of curiosity why the 28 thumbs down? What's not to like about this video? Very clear and honest video. I guess its true what they say. Haters got to hate. Sad. Thanks for the informative video.
No the truck has a gross combined of 37,000 pounds and could tow most any 5th wheel camper sold, but it makes more sense to sell you the truck that is $25,000 more. A 40 foot long wide body Pinnacle one of the big boys weighs only 16,500 max weight. Some big toy haulers get up to 20,000 but the truck does not weigh over 17,000 pounds and could easily tow it.
Greg's a true sales professional, customer safety's first consideration, guarantee he has built many lasting relationships across multi-decade career.
I live in Houston close to downtown and take my company car to Knapp. Great service and great people. Even more of a reason to buy from them if I decide to go Chevy next time around for my personal vehicle.
That would be a great largeTruck Camper hauler where payload is needed!
Actually it would be way to tall. On a ram 5500 4x4 with a Host Mammoth on it the height is about 13ft2. Kinda useless over 13.6
Actually, I just looked up the 4x4 version outfitted with an Allison 1750 transmission. It carries a GCWR of 37,500. Now maybe your sales guy can't get it in that configuration OR maybe the Chevy version can't be configured that way. What I found was the International / Navistar CV in this configuration which is the same truck. Might want to look in that direction if this was your number 1 requested medium duty truck.
You can order the chevy and international in all kinds of configurations different gear ratios, several different Allison classes, ect. But to order a truck is a 6 to 12 month wait right now. I'd say they didn't have the right spec truck on the lot. I personally have a 2020 Chevy Silverado 5500HD 4x4 crew cab flatbed that I pull my gooseneck with and dump trailer with and have no problems
He didn't say the truck couldn't handle it but that GM rated the truck's gross combined weight lower because the truck was designed for payload not combination.
Now we are getting somewhere,. Guessing with the Navistar deal they derate the bow tie med duty truck to light duty to protect sales of the Navistar international and possibly the gmc line. Where is the 60k truck. Bet it's across the street at the buick gmc store
@@destro513 I suspect an agreement to go after differing markets between Navistar and GM cause it's the same Truck. I'd say your spot on in your analysts.
The International and GM can get a 37,000 pound gross combined weight for 2 wheel drive and 34,000 for 4 wheel drive. A pinnacle 40 foot long wide body 5 th wheel is about 16,500 max weight, it is a big camper.. So this truck with a flatbed could haul it easy. It just makes more sense that you buy the truck that costs $25,000 more. There are many trucks listed on Chevy's webpage with dealers that can to the max weight.
After watching the video on the 2wd truck I immediately went online looking for a 5500 with a dump body on the back and I was shocked at how affordable they are compared to even 3500 chassis dump trucks
Would have never guessed. Great info.
Some of these have a gross combined weight rating up to 37k. The curb weight (loaded weight of you and stuff in truck) plus trailer weight is your GCWR you can exceed its not the gross weight of truck and trailer those have to do with CDL rating needed NOT manufacture ratings of GCWR one reason GM doesn’t list a tow rating persay. Most the curb weights on them are 12-14k or even less, that leaves you 23-25k in trailer weight. Most 5th wheels RV weigh no were near that. Plus you get a MDT truck alot lore stable. So not sure how it you are saying won’t haul well for an RV? Well maybe cause he wants to sell you a 3500 for $75-85k lol
It makes more sense to buy the truck for $25,000 more doesn't it?
@@badgerpa9 if you don't like money buy a 3500 you get smaller breaks, tires, axles, frames, transmission etc. The 5500 is a medium duty truck and WAY more stable towing way better breaks. Yes the Medium duty have the derated L5D it has smaller turbo that spools quicker, make less power, This is to get the engine to live longer in a work environment. So unless you're buying an RV that grosses over 20k the 5500/6500 is perfect for a dedicated tow rig plus you never have to worry about over loading rear axle with a some unit having a 15k rating plus the 2wd have air ride available. Most 1 tons only have 10k rear axle rating easy to over load.
True True!!!
He’s right about the weight rating. You need to do some research. This truck has 4wd axles and transfer case and transmission for med duty trucks. Weighs way more. Just like a f450 has less capacity than a f350 setup the same way. Look stuff up.
Great vids, I have a 3500 Ram dual wheel on order to pull my Columbus 388FK that you also did a video on.
Outstanding information!!!
What a beautiful truck!
What you didn't cover: These medium duty trucks are...in every way more capable trailer haulers than their light duty pickup counterparts. Bigger brakes. Stronger axles. Stronger frames. Stronger wheels and tires. Bigger cooling systems, and better visibility (up higher, bigger windows, and bigger mirrors.) More stable when heavily loaded. So why the lower ratings?
SAE J2807 has a power to weight requirement. Less power, less GCWR allowed. There's an acceleration test and the Davis Dam grade test - fully loaded, A/C on full, minimum ambient of 100 F, ~3000 feet of climbing in 11 miles. Not allowed to overheat. Not allowed to drop below 35 mph.
These medium duty trucks are derated: sameish engine as the light duty pickup but lower output. Likely because of the need to run hard every day, every mile, with a loaded out dump body, utility body with a bucket lift, etc. (Light duty pickup trucks are usually given tasked with a large percentage of lightly loaded "commuting" miles.) Perhaps also due to insurance and/or govt regs for class three vehicles. In the case of the L5D vs L5P, this means a smaller turbo, smaller injectors, smaller oil cooler, and smaller tune. All of this can (and is) being fixed in the aftermarket. Still, bottom line, with a lower power, output you can't make the Davis Dam grade test at 35 mph with as much weight. Power to weight ratio, plain and simple.
Does the Davis Dam test reflect how heavy trailers are towed every day, mile after mile, in every part of the country? I say no. If it was my job to pull heavy...day in and day out and the legality of GCWR was not a concern, I'd pick the reduced power medium duty truck.
I'm 1300 miles away. If I was ready to purchase I would give that gentleman my business.
Thanks, I liked to get the 5500 very nice.
Honest dealerships are not very common so props to them. I can’t believe that beast is cheaper than my Denali Dually.
Ha! Small world! We actually upfit many vehicles for them, including this one here. Cool channel
Can you configure this 5500 with a specific engine/transmission such that it can be upfitted similar to this style and with number that allow towing a 22k 5th wheel?
I'm glad the salesman was honest with you, but I'm really disappointed you won't be adding a Chevy 5500 to the channel. I was really looking forward to it.
I'm buying one of these for an off-road camper build. Local dealer has a crew cab chassis for 55k.
I like the one @6min. I'm thinking a good use for these may be a flatbed big enough for a SXS UTV to sit on and still have room for 5th wheel hitch. An option for those who want to bring the toy but don't like toy haulers
One problem with def on passenger side is getting fuel and def at truck stops at the big rig lanes. Def is on driver side
But if you hire people with no experience and pot smokers you need to try and make it fool proof.
That's why they use those for EartthRommers!
If you are inviting a Chevy representative on your walk around, let him talk or do it alone
@@reggiepplee5759 why would he get fired? he just got 70k people looking at their dealer for free....
Man I’d love to see this with a pickup bed and a truck camper on it but I do think it’s too big to fit one 😭 lol 🤣😂 but damn this is a nice truck...I still want one
Kelderman makes air ride for these trucks. I’ve used Kelderman on 4 trucks so far they are perfect
They make for the new MD trucks? Who knew?! Cool.

An amazing salesman right you guys are definitely 100% on point very rare these days and getting more and more rare unfortunately

Wow beautiful
Hey man love the videos been watching to a long time, a unrelated question but looking to go big on a fifth wheel, how do you like the 2021 Grand Design Solitude S-Class 3950BH? Thinking about making the purchase soon
Would like to have one of these with a truck camper on it...
And fully boxed frame is harder to clean fully and IMO more susceptible to rust because particularly in north.
I'd love to put my truck camper on one of those once it's tuned
Look up Banks products for that. EPA certified.
I had one handles like sports car , factory offers nine different gear ratios ,5.13/3.07 and lockers..Bad,19.5 rims only three tire types available,go with 22.5s now 50 plus tires.Mine5.13 x 395-85-20's ,w 10 mpg at 12k lbs empty wt,,BUT 110 mph wide open !
Need a low cab forward design that’s 4wd!! That would be a beast, in any size range. Half, 3/4,1 ton with 5 less feet of hood and 2-5 more feet of bed space in the same sized vehicle….. or 6door can for large families with a 6-8ft bed still.
You being a RV guy i’m really surprised that you did not think of the truck camper world. I’m wondering if this wouldn’t be a perfect fit to put a heavy truck camper add storage boxes and cargo you can easily be 5,000lbs then the question is, what can you tow behind this rig!
If being used as a towing only truck it can be retuned for that use. A friend has basically the same truck as shown, except has all the bells and whistles. It's a 6500. Tuning by GM.
Those medium duty's are just so damn cool, too bad the weight combination doesn't work out.
You can get a higher rating on them. It's all in how they are ordered and set up
You can get a gross of 37,000, so a under 10,000 pound truck and a 20,000 pound trailer is fine. It is always better to buy the truck that is $25,000 more dollars though.
I hate to tell you Greg but I would pull a 17,000 lb fifth wheel with that 5500 long before any 3500 I do not think greg understands trucks at all the 5500 has bigger 19.5 rubber bigger brakes it is an all around bigger stronger safer truck to tow anything . Maybe someone needs to tell greg he is in Texas and someone will buy that truck hook it to a 25,000lb rated gooseneck and load it with hay big square bales LOL
The 6500 is gross combined at 37,000 pounds.
@@badgerpa9 Yep Yep Like I said Greg was trying to sell the 3500 when that 5500 would do the job better cheaper normal bullshitting car salesman
@@steventaylor5713 So many commenters just blindly believe him.
Looking at one now
I was actually considering one of those trucks to do hot shot because I thought that they could haul a gooseneck trailer with a lot of weight like a 3gn big Tex
The gross combined is 37,000 pounds.
My rig is a 2021 3500HD Crewcab 4x4 LB Duramax
Thought the idea of a 5th wheel was to put the load over the axel - guess will just have to believe in GOVT oversight
I have heard that the F600 could be the chassis for the next Thor or Dynamax Super C. Would you consider reviewing one of them?
Wow. No unded the hood footage. Thanks man wow
So why not a Freightliner Medium duty? Can you do a video on those?
TFL did. Check it out
In Canada these MSRP for $150-180k CAD new... where as a 2500HD pickup is ~90k CAD
I wonder why they're cheaper in than trucks in US - Here is basically double.
It would be a great truck for a big truck camper
Basically a slightly updated Topkick/Kodiac with a pickup cab rather than the van. Looses cab space, gains ergonomics and trim upgrade.
You should check out an International CV. They have 4x4 options and crew cab.
International CV is the same truck
Same truck and it has a 37,000 gross combined and could tow most any camper easy.
Nice truck
I think the micro needs moved over the range. I don't own a RV but the last one we had had 2 AC's non ducted on an old 30' class a with 30 amp service so we could only use 1 ac at a time . In the Kansas heat that was OK but to be able to use the 2 at the same time would have been better IDK if a 3rd would be necessary. As well as ducted AC in the bedroom isn't needed. Also with the 3 ac's do they really need to be ducted in the living space?
Just an FYI. A F-600 has a GCWR of 43,000 and 32,000 towing in a 4x4 supercab. F-550 supercrew 4x4 GCWR 40,000 and 30,000 towing. Plus Ford has more hp and tq than all GM’s.
Actually the ford superduties are derated well below the chevys because of how overtuned they are for the consumer space.
Update: GM 350hp 750tq
Ford 330hp 825tq
I apologize but in trucks tq
Is king
I like Greg. I appreciate honest sales people. If ur going to buy ur going to buy.
i really like your channel, the content and, the information you share but, i really wish you would let the person you are asking questions talk without interruptions.
@Big Truck Big RV- Hey JD, in all fairness to the truck, this appears to be a problem with the spec as shown, and not the truck. The axles and suspension drive the class 5 GVWR, but the transmission model drives the GCWR. I'm not sure if Chevy can spec this truck as I'm stating, but you can spec the International CV class 5 series with an Allison 1750 transmission giving you a GVWR of 19,500lbs, and a GCWR of 37,500lbs. The Chevy class 6 can most certainly be spec'd with the Allison 2750 transmission with a GVWR of 23,500lbs ( 23,000lbs 4x4) and a GCWR of 37,500lbs. Great review otherwise. Up here in Canada, only the International CV is for sale. Happy to help anyone further with any questions on this model, as it can be perfectly spec'd and equipped for RV's.
Glad I wasn't the only one that caught that. Thanks man and I agree. I think JD should talk to an International rep.
@@fireincumbents Well he can talk to me! ;) I'm along way from TX, but its the same Spec here as there in Canada.
@@fireincumbents I should have added that I'm a Canadian International Rep.
Trucks are the same the GM and International and the GM can be speced with gross combined of 37,000. The A2750 transmission would be a good choice.
@@badgerpa9 In that case, its a spec problem, not the truck. Instead of focusing on how this truck only makes sense as a great "payload truck" they should have chatted about the spec overall and how they could increase the GCWR with proper transmission for the application. 80% of of the CV's that I sell are class 6 with the A2750 for this exact reason.
Please continue your content.
I had started my hauling business with a 2019 6500HD 4x4 ..... for every 4-5 weeks it was out on the road it would spend 1 week in the shop ..... it was a complete let down for me [being a GM/silverado guy] i traded it in for a freightliner /sport chassis after 8 months of ownership . Just so many teething issues Fuel Pumps ,brake rotors , brake assist pump issues , no factory support.
The freightliner will not only be better but a lot safer if you tow big weight.
Try comparing a gmc top kick to this Chevy and the other top kick cab is 10/10 with an electric fold out bed and air ride seats taller cabin room
So did you buy the 3500 dually 4x4. Since that one can do what you need it to do?
Any idea when Chevrolet is going to put a gas engine in the medium duty truck preferably the 8.1?
Actually jd, you might be able to use this to tow your 5th wheel after all. Chevy just increased max gcwr to 37,000 lbs.
So the ultimate question is what's your next plan for you hd truck
Can you put an 8 ft pickup bed on the truck to accommodate a large slide in camper? Maybe a company like Lance could mount one of their campers directly to the frame!
Just from looking at how closed the duals are to the back of this 11 ft bed, I think the cab to axle length is longer on this 5500 so a regular 8 ft bed probably wouldn't work. But a custom bed with boxes would be sweet! I recently saw a video somewhere about a company making custom ish beds for slide in campers. Little bit longer wheel base than a 3500 which isn't ideal if you're off roading at all but you'd finally be under weight.
Yes. You can get this truck with an 8 foot frame behind the cab
They make campers with a flat floor so you have more floor space than one designed to fit in a pick up, they mount to a flat bed often.
What do you think would happen if you even tried to connect the sway bars on a weight distribution hitch? Imagine what the trailer's tongue jack would be up against!
😂😂 I'd think it would be best to use a floor jack
Now that you can get a 4500 with 14001 gvwr and a gcwr of 37000 it can tow pretty well.
I have no idea why I watched this video, but I watched it anyways. Kind of fun.
Those 4500-6500 HD trucks are gorgeous vehicles, so much more attractive than the 2500/3500 trucks. Shame that they aren't rated for more towing capacity.
It has a combined of up to 37,000 pounds that will tow most any camper.
I watched both your videos on the Chevy 5500. Since its strength in in hauling cargo, I wondered if it might be a good fit for hauling a bed mounted truck camper? Just a thought.
This too, most 3/4 tons I have been starting to research seem to be at that 3500lb options on average. and the cost... Still not sure going diesel will be any saving grace..
You can get a 23,500 max truck weight so you can put a big camper on it and still tow up to the 37,000 max combined.
What did Chevy do to the 6500 after it came out to make it a higher GCWR, so it could do the big 5th wheels?
A C channel frame. Is used in high torque applications. Show that the frame will twist. In case of class a vehicles. If they use a fully Box frame. From the torque load the frame would crack and break. With a C channel configuration. The frame Cannes twist with the shock loads. From high torque applications.
It would be cool to put a bliss mobil on it!
If my 2012 Chevy 3500hd can pull and handle my 45 foot toy hauler , the 5500 would haul it a lot easier, and be a lot better on the truck. The 5500 with a aluminum flatbed is what i am looking for.
