Thanks so much for all this info. My case is: 30 year old with mild to moderate acne. Retinol for a month and noticed skin is visibly better, acne cleared and new acne cleared quicker than usual. Can I continue with the slow and steady retinol or should I go with prescription retinoid? Wouldn’t the intended the result be the same, just the latter being quicker?

I would just continue with the retinol if you tolerate. Just like you said- the end result is the same and if you switch to the prescription and get a ton of irritation you may end up derailing your efforts:)

i began using a otc retinol at age 20. i used it for the entire year and then decided to switch to tretinoin because of the hype. i noticed i had chest pains, stomach pains, difficulty breathing at night, elevated anxiety, and overall light sensitivity. at first i didnt realise what the cause was, but once i stopped using tret, all my issues went away and i did a deep dive on the case studies and issues tretinoin can cause.definitely returning to using an otc retinol especially because i dont have any skin concerns.

The retinoid will help if you can be consistent. Other ingredients to add are azelaic acid , tranexamic acid or kojic acid which can help with hyperpigmentation. Hydroquinone is generally prescription and is the most effective for hyperpigmentation but also has most side effects
