  • Facebook’s global expansion has been linked to political turmoil overseas, so maybe their ads should focus less on how they “connect the world” and more on why connecting people isn’t always the best idea.

      I am in America and I am an American and I am so sad to say that all of what J.O. says appears to be at least 98% accurate. I just discovered his show a month or so ago but have watched gotta be 50 of these clips at this point and yes again…sadly this is extremely accurate. I don’t know what happened but we all (not just America) seem to be in a bit of trouble. It’s coming…likely sooner than later. I e commented on a few about simple right from wrong…this simple concept can fix a lot of the worlds problems. Like your parents taught you when you were kids. It’s kind of a feeling that you just feel givin the situation. Really not as complicated as it appears to be.

    This happened 2 years ago in Indonesia: During the governational election of Jakarta, Indonesia, a surge of hate speech and xenophobia posts inflitrated to many of our facebook timeline. Promoting a toxic division between the natives and Chinese Indonesian. Later it was proven that the xenophobic posts were backed up by the opponent political party who were taking an advantage of facebook's flawed system. It was utterly toxic, that caused an actual riot between many ethnicities & religions. This is why facebook needs to fix this issue fast. Especially political parties who are using fake news as a tool to "win". It's almost the presidential election next year, i hope these fake news epidemic will be cured soon before then

People literally were publicly lynched to death because of whatsapp forwards! Atleast ad(promoted) content should be monitored. Whatsapp officials actually had a meeting with govt representatives for the same. Probably a local database or something will be made not totally sure. It's hard, sure, but can't brush it off. It's not their fault, ofcourse, but monitoring which does not violate privacy of good users is important.

    I was born in Myanmar, and grew up there, and it saddens me to see the country portrayed like this, because IT'S ABSOLUTELY TRUE. There's a whole lot of hatred and paranoia in the country, and it uses religion (Buddhism) as a way to persecute people of other religions and ethnicity. If you are of any religion than Buddhism, you're the "other" and are very likely not safe. Hell, they even think of the other sect of Buddhism, Mahayana, as a demonic religion, when there's very few differences between the two sects (Myanmar practices Theravada).
    This episode is completely accurate in portraying the prevalence of facebook in Myanmar. People may not have any idea how to use google, or enter a URL, but they can use facebook for pretty much everything. Facebook is basically substituted for tinder, yelp, twitter, pornhub and more in that country. And when facebook is the "internet" for the entire country, you better believe any "news" that goes viral is going to be common news for the people there. There's no fact checking, and people accept it as completely legit, and this is a very prevalent way in which hate is riled up there. It's absolutely appalling, and sadly, I don't see it changing anytime soon. The country has been put too backwards by the military dictatorship, and the education system in the country is outdated by 20~40 years depending on the subject.
    Thanks to LastWeekTonight for creating this episode. Even though I have no attachments to the country, it's nice to know that more people will now be more aware of the atrocities and problems in Myanmar.

    Facebook is one giant echochamber for Islamophobia, that is correct. However let's be honest, facebook is a giant echochamber for everything. Facebooks algorythms are designed to introduce people to people with similiar opinions. They are not designed to introduce people to a wide variety of opinions. And why is that? Because facebook is primarily a business. And if some random facebook user keeps getting notifications from people they vigirously disagree with they might decide to leave facebook.

    • @risharehraje793
      @risharehraje793 Před 5 lety +13

      It's quite simple. Islam adores pedophile. Spreads hae against jews and gays. Enforce religious laws. And so on. So standing agains such hateful ideology is quite common. Imagine that any other ideology would claim "Carl was having sex with 9 years olg girl. Carl is great and he is our example, let's all we live like Carl. Oh and kill gays and everyone, who will leave our religion."
      There are not even 2 countries in the world with majority of muslims, where humans rights would not be violated by law. Everywhere, where islam gained control, human rights perished. So are you still surprised that people speak against such ideology?

    • @KingQwertzlbrmpf
      @KingQwertzlbrmpf Před 5 lety +4

      I fully agree that the term "Islamophobia" is used incorrectly in most instances. A phobia is an irrational fear. Calling criticism of Islam islamophobia is a category mistake. There undoubtedly are irrational fears about Islam out there, but there are equally undoubtable rational fears out there. And criticism is by definition not fear, therefore the category mistake.
      The main reason is used the term "Islamophobia" in my post was because that was the term John Oliver was using. Also the main point i was trying to make was not that facebook is an echochamber for what is called "Islamophobia", but that facebook is an echochamber for every other idea as well and in equal measures.
