The Meenakshi Amman temple complex in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, is an awe-inspiring sight to behold, and one of the finest examples of a south Indian Hindu temple. Soaring to over 50 meters (150 feet) high, the 14 gateway towers, or gopurams, are stunningly decorated with thousands of full color carvings. We also manage to get a look inside the temple, where there is a real elephant!

I am from Kerala, the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu. The one thing I can say about the Tamil is that they will protect a friend with their life and the opposite with their enemies. True Tamils will die before leaving their culture - its from my experience with working with Tamils for around 10 years. Highly proud of their culture.

My North Indian friends visited and complained, that they got lost in the temple. True. There are five entrances to the temple. Only 1% can come back exactly from the same gate through which they enter the temple.
Since the temple is built in concentric square, it is easy to get lost inside as you will loose sense of direction once you enter the temple.

India should teach these things and about these beautiful temples insted if a stupid mughal kings and British who killed and looted India.

william mccann - because those mother fucking so called European historians or scholars think world is revolving around so called ancient civiluzations like Egypt, mesopotamia, Sumeria, Babylon, Rome and Greek etc., So that, they can conveniently link into Vatican fabricated Bible and Christ which is more than 50% lies. They unscrupulously avoided the fact that all those civiluzations had cultural and commercial link with ancient India. Your God and the Arab god are the relatively recent phenomena where as Hindu religion, culture and the customs predates all and is still practiced and prevailing.

The fact is Madurai is as old as Kashi, Madurai is the only place in the entire galaxy where Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi along with their children Ganesha and karthikeya stayed here and ruled as king and queen for centuries that much they loved this place Madurai. Lord Shiva remainds Goddess Parvathi its time they should move from here to Kailasa, Goddess Parvati does not want to leave this place hence she promised Madurai people that she took a standing form ( currently where The Goddess Meenakshi stands inside temple) when ever they need she will address their issues, Hence Lord shiva also took a form and staying along with Meenakshi Amma inside this temple same as Ganesha and Kartikeya too.

I am born and raised in Madurai. Each sculpture is some character in Tamil literature. There are lots of stories behind each and every sculpture in poetical format. My mom used to take me here every weekend in the sixties and seventies and narrate the stories. Thank God we didn't have TVs and cell phones were there not there. The temple used to be our faith and entertained at same time. As I grew up virtually in this temple couldn't accept temples in north India as true Hindu temple.
