  • Article published In "An Piobaire." Reeds, new or old, that have become dull in tone and resistant in response are usually warped. This method restores a badly warped reed to vibrant response by very light sanding of the interior surfaces with fine sandpaper on a succession of differently sized cylinders, to recreate perfectly uniform cross-grain curvature from edge to edge, from the lips down beyond the center of the reed. The method can create tiny leaks between the edges which are easily repaired by rubbing them after re-assembly on soft beeswax to seal any gaps perfectly airtight. Perfect curvature is probably most important for dry- and humid-blown bagpipes like the Irish uilleann pipes, various small-pipes and Scottish bagpipes because the reeds are built with narrow openings due to the absence of embouchure, and their cane (not being played wet) is stiff. It may be worth trying for other double reed instruments including early and concert double-reed winds.
