  • I won the lottery and found a factory CJ5 Perkins diesel engine without a home. Thus, an installation into the Jeep that burned down in a house fire was most necessary. This video showcases all the specific unique parts of a diesel Jeep engine and shows it installed in a CJ2A.

    I'm having fun watching your videos. Just thought I'd toss this out at you. I built a CJ3-B a bunch of years ago and learned a few tricks.
    The axles are Dana 25 front and 35 rear (as I recall) and the wheel bolt patterns are the same as a mid-70s Chevy 1/2T truck. I took the front rotors and calipers off a 75 (I think) Blazer and they were a direct bolt-on to the front and rear axles on the Willys. I added a spacer washer about 3/16" thick to center the rotors in the caliper, but other than that it was a direct bolt-in and cost me less than a full brake job with the drum system. I installed new Warn manual front axle hubs. Next, I took the brake/clutch pedal group out of a early 80s (I think) Jeep Cherokee. They come out in a unit, bolted to a single plate. I bolted that to the firewall of the Willys with a reinforcement plate on the engine side of the firewall and removed the floor pedals and welded up the rust-attracting holes in the floorboard. I installed a brake master cylinder and proportioning valve from Summit Racing on the firewall in the engine bay, ran new brake lines and !voila! Your parking brake is on a drum on the rear drive line, just aft of the transfer case, so you still have a parking brake and everything is legal. Next, I took the clutch master and slave cylinders from the same Jeep Cherokee and installed the master on the firewall and the slave underneath in place of the old clutch linkage. Easy peasy! Now I had four-wheel disc brakes and a hydraulic clutch on a modern pedal group hanging under the dash. Retained the original engine, trans, and transfer case. Mounted 33-10.50 aggressive tires on it. We used to joke that the Willys took a while to get up to speed, but it would stop on a dime!
    Maybe some of that info will be useful/fun for you.

    Perkins 4203. I fitted one in my Land Rover years ago. They were a common and popular engine upgrade before TDI’s became readily available. Economical, will pull a house down, but very slow. Parts are still readily available.

    I put a Kubota 2.2L turbo diesel into my 46, they should have come from the factory with little diesel engines like this!

    Diesel mechanic here, in regards to your being stumped why you had exhaust gas coming out cooling system, but no coolant in the oil, it just depends where the head gasket leak is, if it's between a coolant passage and the cylinder, the cylinder pressure is so much more than an open coolant system, that it's just physics, has to go from high pressure to low pressure. Then it just depends on how good the rings are, etc, as far as if coolant gets into the cylinder, how easy it gets into the sump to make milkshakes. I was a marine diesel mechanic, and sailboats are a good source of small diesel motors. A Perkins 4.108 is almost the 350 Chevy of small marine diesels, they are just starting to get expensive/difficult to get parts for, so you can sometimes pick them up cheap. They have almost exact same weight, hp, and torque, of a Ford model A motor, hah. Keep on trucking.

    Good info bro never know they made diesel for jeep at that time.
    Rugged vid ! Think a body lift would have help the Perkins be a better fit?
    Safety is nice but somtimes just gotta get out n get it.

    Neat project!! Great little diesel engine!! I know you are all about keeping it as close to original but you could do the R2.8 cummins 4 cylinder is just as neat as thst Holley Sniper EFI just a little more money.
    Or a VW TDI engine.

    Turn N Burn, i have a couple Qs? one is where do you find willys jeep, half destroyed/half burnt, (price wise), and second is have you thought of putting a very small 4bt cummins in it, cause it would be a fun project to build for me in oregon, thank you for your patients and your time, your friend jon cusic

    I'm picking up a Massey Ferguson 65 with the 4.192 engine in it. Any idea what kind of adapter plate is used? Also any idea where to find a T98? They are unobtanium in Utah.

    • @TurnNBurn
      @TurnNBurn  Před 2 lety

      Look into the T18 trans. As for adapters you'll have to custom make one since you don't have the factory Jeep setup.
