Arabs vs Latinos - Can they tell each other apart?

- Last year I moved to Colombia to study Spanish. Everyone there seemed to think I was latino.. And when my friend Mohammed came to visit, they thought the same thing about him. That brings me onto this video: 'Arabs vs Latinos - Can they tell each other apart?'. We presented candidates with 2 pictures each time, of which one person is Arab and the other Latino, and they had to guess which person belonged to what ethnicity. Enjoy!

Both arabs and Latinos aren't a spefic race, as they both range from fair to dark.
Skin colour does NOT dictate race either. Latino is Not a race but you cannot say the same for Arab as they are descendants of the original indigenous people of the Arabian Peninsula and moved to various regions, however Latino is a culture a generally mixed between Spanish African and Indigenous of the Americas. So in short, Arab can be its own race but often classified as part of the brown race. There are people who have 100 percent pure Arab blood and are dark skin and some are very light skin without being mixed with Sub-Saharan African or European.
Color isn't really accurate in determining race either. Just look at any DNA test result from a person of mixed ethnicity, but I understand what you're getting at.
nah , you re not egyptian remember that nigga
@@lebebeve4881 Arab countries are classified as arabs because they speak Arabic that is all, the ethnicity of north africans is not arabic it is a mixture as well as those who come from the Jordan's area and irak, still even those in yemen and saudi which are supposed to be the originals are mixed

@@jasonmason6910 Yea we know but it's just super rare compared to here where there's around 60 million Hispanics. I been to UK 4 times and never as much as seen a Mexican restaurant lol I'm sure there is some though.
A lot of Latinos don’t realize there’s an Arab influence in our genes, culture and language. The moors or berbers ruled Spain before the Christians for a few centuries. This is why we have similar words in both languages and this is why, especially for Puerto Rican’s like myself, many of us have Arab names were unaware are. For example, Maida, Medina, Ayala, Ismael.
Moors were north african.
The word moor came from the word moro which is the spanish word for the mauri, also it's an exonym, they used their own names.
Moorish ancestry people used to live in europe since the times of the roman empire, because they were part of it, some of them founded cities like mortain or moreac in france.
The moors were berbers of several different tribes way before being converted to islam ,and the annexation by the ummayad (by at least one thousand years).
Only the small elite of the caliphate that ruled spain was arab, (also soldiers like guards) they rarely intermarried with commoners.
They were expelled from spain.
Some modern spaniards do have north african DNA (an average of 5%), but almost none have arab heritage,
besides of north african and the arab elite, the caliphate also had sephardic jews.
Arabic was widely used in the peninsula thats why spanish have some arabic words, but it was also used by scholars and scientists, in english many science related words are arab like algebra, algorithm etc.
Irce Sekk Irce Sekk Irce Sekk Berbers are considered North African some examples are Egyptian, Libyan and especially Morrocan. Berbers are very similar to Bedouin and still have ties in the region til this day. I can only speak from my understanding of the berbers, but more importantly from my understanding of our history as a Latin woman. I also won’t stomach the idea of someone who isn’t Latin, telling Latin people what is in our blood or of our history. Thank you.
Destiny Rodriguez. Hi. How can you be so sure about what's my ethnicity? lol. Do you know why I have an special interest in studying the these subjects?
You are assuming things and attacking me rather than my idea.
That's an ad hominem fallacy, when the main topic is avoided by instead attacking the atribute of the person (me) making the argument.
I'ts important to have in mind that the spaniards who conquered hispanic america, are the same who fought against the people of the last iberian emirate, in the reconquest of spain. they kicked them out from spain, then they went to the americas.
Like the governor of puerto rico Juan Ponce de Leon y Figueroa, before coming to the americas, he fought against the emirate and took part in their expulsion.
I apologize if I made you feel bad, that wasn't my purpose.
Have a nice day.
Queen Girl......I said the berbers/Moors invaded Spain. Part of North Africa is still Arab ie Egyptian, Moroccan, Tunisian etc. In fact berbers still exist in communities preserving their lifestyle and written language til this day! I believe they’re especially present in smaller areas of Morocco. Countries have such complex histories and their geographic closeness also plays a role in what becomes their culture. There has always been a similarity in language from Spanish to Arabic because of the history. None of us can rewrite history to what we want it to be. So yes the berbers/moors (let’s not forget Arab and African are not mutually exclusive) conquered Spain and ruled. They left their mark and then when Spain was reconquered by Christians the colonization occurred in Latin America and the Caribbean that has spread this blended and mixed culture. I’m Puerto Rican and I’m very aware of our Hispanic Creole mix of being Taino, Spaniard and African. What I’m saying is if you break down the history of those regions you learn more of what makes up each of those parties. I’m not an expert, but I do find the topic of cultural influence based on geography extremely interesting! There’s a term for this but I can’t remember it. Anyway, I’m happy to continue discussing this with you or anyone because i think it’s a cool way to learn, but I just want to clarify this exchange will never turn into whose more right than the other because I don’t see how that benefits anyone. God bless.
@GT phoenicians weren't arabs nor did they speak arabic, and they were from the levant not the arabian peninsula, they were canaanites and although semetic and related to arabs, they were their own people, more closely related to assyrians and arameans than to arabs, they also didn't contribute a lot genetically to the places they traveled to and as a result only some parts of spain, italy and greece have phoenician dna. they also didn't go to the americas, even though they were sailors they didn't have ships that were advanced enough to travel from the levant to the americas, they did however travel all over the mediterranean, as did greeks which is why there where greek communities in italy, lebanon, and egypt at the time

South americans and latin hispanics are multi ethnic, we look like almost every dam race bruh 😂
@chonburi11 Of course they can. If you born in Latinamerica then you are latino. There are asian latinos in countries like Brazil and Argentina yet they are a minority.
If you think you all are multiracial imagine how multiracial and multi ethnic middle easterns are, they are in the middle of Asian countries, Africa, europe. That's why they are called middle easterns.
We got middle easterns mixed with Africans, middle easterns mixed with Chinese, middle eastern mixed with indian, middle eastern mixed with Europe and slavics. I know many things about Latin America so there is no excuse that you don't know anything about the rest of the world.. knowledge yourself a bit, you all aren't the only multicultural and multi ethnic.
@chonburi11 I would say your Filipino brothers would be more of the ones to pass off as Latinos because of their significantly high percentage of Nahuatl admixture, and the fact that they were colonized by Spain for over 300 years.
@chonburi11 I'm talking about Nahuatl and a little bit of Spanish, and the fact that the Filipinos are more closer to latinos (specifically, Mexicans) considering their Hispanic-influenced culture. Thais are less to pass of as latinos since they had nothing to do with European colonizers and that's a fact.
@chonburi11 The average Filipino actually has over 14% of Nahuatl DNA, as a result of the Manila-Acapulco galleons, greater than the 2% DNA that they share with Spaniards. I would say that they're closer to latin americans because of that and also because of their hispanic-like culture that was significantly influenced by Mexicans.
I would say that the Thais in the video look a bit like the asian-latinos that live in the southern parts of America.
This is why race is a social construct we all have more similarities than differences.
Akira, I am willing to bet that you are Ecuadorian
Well...spain itself has a decent admixture of arab DNA...latinos have a good chunk of spanish DNA..therefore a decent amount of arab traits as well..add that to the mixture of native traits and it makes sense that we can look simmilar.
Akira Valencia is not a social construct but it shouldn't be on the way to gave good relations among everyone. Race can affect people's health a lot , you only can see it in the transplants or blood transfusions .
Many ethnicities have multiple racial components; when societies becomes more and more mixed, this will all be for naught... MLK's dream is only realized when we BECOME the Other!
There are non physical differences. Latinos are more cool and hip while Arabs are odd, corny and can't dress.

So how aren’t we related again?
jordan carver also after ww1 and ww2 there was a major influx of Arabic countries to Latin America because of the fall of the Ottoman Empire. Many cities in Latin America are Arabic inspired for example Medillin and Cali both cities of Colombia their cities were based of Arabic and Jewish buildings. Hell Central America has one of the largest Palestinian and Lebanese populations outside of Palestine and Lebanon. Hell Shakira and Selma Hayek both very popular Latina celebrities, both are actually half latina and half arab.

@JessikaEmerald
I'm surprised that you managed to secure their genetic data via video. How'd you do it?
Most Latinos are mestizos or indios, i.e. a mix of Spanish and Native American, and native respectively. Most Arabs do not have 'invader DNA' (the very notion of displacing people genetically has been dismissed by academic consensus--so to address your point about Egyptians, modern Egyptians are absolutely the same as their ancient Egyptian forefathers).
As for the Latinos that have Arabic DNA, there probably isn't enough of it to be shown phenotypically after so many generations--even if there was, you'd have to test their DNA be able to tell which may have Arab ancestry. Though, there are some Arabs who have settled in places like Colombia, Argentina, etc., that may consider themselves Latino and speak Spanish.
All this information is readily available in modern genetics publications. I'm more than happy to provide sources, I recommend you to do the same.
ITS THE SAME BLEND Caucasian, a bit of Asian + African. the skintone varies based on % of the blend, so is the face, so is the hair.
@Onomatopoeia
Sure, but like I said it is impossible to determine who has Arab ancestry without a DNA test. For all we know, the individual Latino could be descended from Catalonians, Leonese, Castellans, Visigoths, etc., with no Arab admixture whatsoever. The Arabs did not migrate on a level that replaced the indigenous Iberians, nor did they procreate with every one of them, so again you would need a DNA test to be certain. Romans held the territory for even longer, yet you are not making the point that they have Italian ancestry, rightfully so, as it depends on the individual and their ancestry, not the people in toto.
The conquistadores were also ones who were hot off their heels forcibly converting or driving out the moriscos, or Muslim Spanish, so I doubt they had much Arab ancestry, as do most historians.
1000 Spainish words come from the Arabic language.

Everyone in college believed i was armenian russian or georgian especially when they saw me comming out of the armenian bakery. The lady that saw me told me "and you said you were not armenian" i told her "your bread is simply amazing specially the ponchik (well i do not know if you spell it this way). I told her that i would be proud of armenia if i were armenian but i am a white mexican american🙂
yes arabs too, : ) especially north african arabs & syrians, they are usually white skin mostly brunettes but they could be blonds & could have light eyes
I am 100% Arab from Palestine and when people see me with my children in the street they think that I am Russian. My cousin from my father's side is half black though both her parents are white so Yas we Arabs come in all shades.

700 years of Arab culture in Al-andalus (Spain and Portugal) left a genetic imprint especially in the southern region. Not every muslim and jew left Al andalus/Sepharad many converted to Catholicism and their descendents settled in the new world. Wallah! Ole!
Sí que interesante I agree with you, I'm from Costa Rica and we have lots of Sepharad words
That's correct I just said something equivalent to what you previously wrote.
Very true. I'm Dominican and all of my relatives that have taken DNA tests have small amounts of Middle Eastern and/or North African ancestry, myself included.
A not so strong genetic imprint at that.

Guess it might demonstrate that they (Arabs and Latinos) are mixed race people perhaps generations ago... Also considering the white people who invaded South America were largely from Spain and Portugal and the proximity between Spain, Portugal, North Africa and the Saudi peninsula, the ancestral racial mix of both Arabs and Latinos is possibly similar... 🤷🏾♀️
Interesting to know the percentages - thanks. I said “perhaps” and “possibly” because I have not done the research. I solely relied on logical deduction coupled with my limited observations of Arabs and South Americans. I only use definitive adverbs when I’m certain about something.
Well instead of telling unrealistic percentage I’m gonna tell you a fact, on genesis match if you test your Latino/Latina DNA you’ll find West Asian, Sub-Saharan or North African genes related, possibly Meso-amerindian if you’re from South America. In fact, Spaniards are the Europeans with the most Maghrebian genes. Search it up on google or genesis match if you already tested your DNA.
HipHipJorge ! You are correct. My uncle is 43 native, 30 percent European, and the rest is a mix between North African and west Asian

That is crucial for conveying the subject of exposing out biases in a respectful, thought provoking way. Your work will advance the idea of brotherhood in the emerging global society. The participants get a hats off to them too. They were sincere, open and believable. For me it was encouraging to hear the young people talk and laugh about subjects that in not so distant past were taboo. Someone told me there's more Lebanese people in Mexico and Latin America than Lebanon but I couldn't find a source. Latinos and Arabs are the best combos. Ya tu sabe! Mashalla'!
I was told that there was a big migration of Lebanese in Latin América, many landed in Haití and Dominican Republic, not always well received in both countries but many overcame the hardships becoming influential individuals in society.
I think Arabs and latinos have a big connections because right before the conquest of America by the Spanish, the arab had a big racial influence in Spain
marco sanchez they had a cultural influence not a racial one! Spanish are for the most part white Europeans
marco sanchez The racial influence was minimal, Arabs/Berbers never emigrated in mass into the Iberian Peninsula and it was mostly soldiers and rulers who were Berbers, so the intermixing was minimal and it shows in the apparence of the Spanish and Portuguese who remain mainly Mediterranean people with some Celtic and Goths influences
0% racial influence

Exactly! Shaper features is what I meant.
The guy who said that latinos have a 'chink' in their eyes is partially right. It's because we are Spanish/Portuguese mixed with native indigenous peoples. (These natives have slanty eyes like East Asians). There are black latinos too, but there also black arabs. But again, black arabs seem to have sharper features (like Somalis for example).
Yes you look like the the majority of arabs, persian and turks; white skin and black hair.
I am from Brazil living in Europe and I've been mistaken by Arab by so many people...
haha feel u bro also living in europe
British police killed a Brazilian in london metro underground because they thought that he was an Arab..
Compact it's because most immigrants who looks exotic in Europe are from Arab/middle eastern countries due to conflicts in their homelands. So a lot of Europeans base it on what they're used to see and not on actual knowledge on looks - even tho Arabs and latinos do look alike - people just seem to purposely avoid mentioning Latin countries.
