« Hispanic » is a term that relates to Spain. Why should they be surprise to have genetic links to Spain ?
« Latin » is broader term witch relates to the south-western European nations that derive their culture and language from Rome…. From latium, where people spoke latin and were called the latins. So, « latin » refer to a group of European cultures. If themself claim the concept of latinity, why are they surprised to realize that they are connected to those latin European countries ??

It’s so nice to have a reaction where someone knows about the basic history. Also, it is definitely looked down on to be seen as being more “native” vs Spanish in South America. My in-laws are from Peru and my MIL did the 23&Me and had her life shook. It’s due to the caste system that the Spanish implemented and still exists in some forms in many of those countries.

Just like the Askenazi…I’m Jewish and after the Romans destroyed the second temple in Jerusalem in 70 A.D. and the Jewish people fled…many scattered throughout Europe…a good number throughout Europe and the persecutions ended up hiding in 🇪🇸… so the fact that there are those with Ashkenazi heritage amongst Latino people isn’t surprising…and yes, the Moors of Spain and those brought as slaves from sub-Saharan Africa constitute a good portion of the African 🧬 genome of the people being tested. The European sources would mostly be Spain, Portugal, Italy, and Greece…and of course the First Nations people of Caribbean and Central and South America…although when the first Iberian Settlers arrived, they almost extirpated the whole native population …as a medical professional and someone who took lots of classes in genetics…the difference is one or two ancestors several generations ago to make a 10% to 15% difference…

After US won war w Mexico, part of the terms of treaty was that they be considered White. So the formerly Mexican citizens living on the land the US took (which amounts to the southwestern 3rd if US) could not be made slaves. Not only did Mexico want to protect its former citizens from being enslaved, it was also important that we not create a precedent that would incentivize the US to expand territory as a means of obtaining more slave populations. This is why today the US government does not list Hispanic/Latino as a race, but rather as an ethnicity one may have in addition to your race/s. (The most common being White/Native).
It's so interesting how particular historical-political realities result in idiosyncratic norms today.
For example, the reason anyone part Black often is identified as Black, but Native identity is highly gatekept, it because in the 1800s it was on the governments interest to count as many people as Black via "one drop rule" because that increases # of slaves ie free labor; whereas it was in governments interest to minimize those counted as American Indian, because US wanted their land and fewer "proven" Indians decreases the number of claimants to that land.

As for the small percentages of African some 'white forever' people show, I explain that by remembering that the ultimate ancestors of every person on Earth came out of Africa. Even if that was 70,000 yrs ago for h.sapiens, we are still exactly the same species, so it's not astonishing that some genetic characteristics made it through to the modern descendants. (400-700,000 yrs ago for those with h. neanderthalis percentages). I'm still wondering about the Ashkenazi Jew traces, but I think it may have something to do with the Jewish diaspora when the Romans kicked them out of Palestine and some wound up in Europe (S. France, for one), or the Slavic populations in Eastern Europe who converted to Judaism in the first millenium and/or with Middle Eastern farmer immigrants to Europe 6,000 yrs ago (or more).

Latinos are largely mixed by migration, and not colonization. Spain effectively became a lot less influential during the Peninsular war (early 18th century) and the vast majority of immigration haooebed afterwards to the independent republics. Also 90% of the indigenous died from disease even before they met any colonists and conquistadors, sometimes even decades before because that's how fast disease travelled. In fact, the amount of people who died from conflict is virtuakly nonexistent when it comes to total post-colombian deaths. That's how ravishing disease was. Of course, Europeans brought disease, ans brought slaves that also carried diseases.
Up to one third of all latinos are largely of white european descent. The rest are mixed, and very fewk have largely indigenous descent. Very few.

But here everything has been about color so to us we find it different and we don’t understand in the context they’re saying it in.
