- So many riders have a fear of leaning their motorcycle, especially at low speeds. The way to overcome that fear is a little bit at a time. By performing the simple exercises I show you in this video, in an hour or so, you'll be leaning your bike with confidence and ease.

That´s awesome - keep learning! I want to give you a tip to watch DanDanTheFireman as well if you want to learn more. He is a lot about first aid, but also tons of tips about avoiding accidents. Please give it a go.
Jerry's 7 rules to lean by:
1. Always look ahead to where you're going, not where you are
2. The bike leans under you. You don't lean
3. Go about 8 mph & never under 5 mph
4. Keep Throttle and clutch in the friction zone
5. Little pressure on the rear brake
6. Keep head and eyes turned the ENTIRE time looking through the turn
7. Do this in both directions
... and repeat!
leaning your bike not your body results in more lean angle on the bike and less traction, on a bigger bike your gonna start scraping pegs, on low speeds its fine as it makes it easier to "flick " the bike but with anything more then 10 mph your gonna get into bad habits which will limit your overall turning ability
@@krosypt1 Such as what? I run my courses police rodeo style if I'm feeling my MOJO, and it's a lot faster than that on the straights. My softail has 2" over forks (and tins) and I make 18' turns. I think you only limit yourself, and I've taught this course a bunch of times especially to riding groups.
ALL common sense. Many experienced riders already do this intuitively.

As in he thinks high speed turns you should not be upright more than the bike. But that is not the lesson being taught here.
This is learn to turn your bike at low speeds before you attempt high speed turns.

Hey Dave, more power to ya! I’m 72 and just got back in the saddle after 50 years without! Having a ball. I get up at 5 every morning to go out to practice all the low speed techniques in a nearby parking lot. Learning so much from Jerry.
I inherited a Harley, and have ridden bicycles and dirt bikes but never a street bike. I have a fear of it, but there's also a little bit of a call to it as well.
Dirt bike riders aren't typically still riding in their 70s and 80s, but its not unheard of for street bikes. Hearing you guys going strong into your older ages while I'm still scared as a youngyun gives me hope. Any advice?
At slow speed rely on the rear brake more than the front until you have front brake action perfect. It's a lot of weight to try to catch from falling.

Its because he not talking baby talk lol. I have done the advanced class and its hard to teach an action like this in words and these guys do a really great job. During a class you have a very short amount of time to teach people these skills and its frustrating, that is the sound in his voice the frustration of teaching by people not paying attention in class, just like high school lol.

"What have we learned from those mishaps we just watched?" We learned why they make those bar guards! And we learned that the world doesn't end if you dump your motor -- it means that you're trying to develop the skills, rather than chickening out or duck-walking, so it's worth keeping at it. I laugh at guys who duck-walk from one curb to another, but never at the guy who dumps because he's still learning.
I think the head mounted cam goes a long way in helping people understand what you mean when you say to look ahead at where you want to go. Also, I love that you mentioned that you lean the bike at low speeds, but keep yourself upright. A lot of people fear leaning the bike because they fear moving around on it. You have to be comfortable with shifting your weight around and really commanding your bike at low speeds.
3:04 "The bike leans under me I don't lean with the bike at low speeds." I found maneuvering my Honda VFR800 at low speeds challenging the first two years I owned it. Then almost by accident I discovered that if I kept my upper body vertical and leaned the bike underneath me, just as you say, it suddenly was possible to handle much more easily. By thinking of keeping my upper body vertical while the bike leans my weight automatically moves to the opposite side and balances the bike. Knowing this came in handy last year when I rode to the top of Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina. There are several hairpin turns at a very steep grade--I'd estimate at least 20%--on the way to the top, and they have to be taken slowly. There's no way I could have made it up there, and back down, without this skill. Excellent advice.
Instead of using expensive cones, I took advice from Motojitsu and bought a bag of tennis balls. Then cut the tennis balls in half. Since they're already yellow, I'll spray paint a few orange to differentiate just like the green cones. You can easily ride over to a parking lot with a bag full of tennis ball halves and do these drills.

@@westcoast3595 awesome! It really is a simple economical method to setup these skills to practice.
For the price of tennis balls you can buy the flat flexible cones (markers) from Amazon or eBay like 50 pieces in different colors for approx 10 dollars. These are easier for transportation because flat cone shaped not taking too much space.
I did that with the tennis ball, and with fluorescent yellow wiffle balls. Then I got some small cones, 6", and found I was cutting the corners and not leaning (swingin & swayin) enough and hitting the cones with my foot boards. So I like the cones better.

I have an ebike and your advice is just as applicable for me. It feels different when you adjust your focus forward. I broke my arm once and am determined not to do it again.

I just traded my Heritage in for a Road Glide. I order the motorcycle guards and the saddlebag guards in preparation for the class at the Louisville franchise next month. A little nervous but looking forward to it.

5 mph rule, the mc was meant to lean in a tight turn and the rider is not meant to lean in the turn.

I'm learning the key to very low speed maneuvers is to add about 5% throttle, feather that clutch, keep your foot somewhat lightly on the rear brake. If the bike starts to lean over too far, ease off the clutch and maybe ease off the rear brake a bit too, and the bike stands right back up. Anytime the bike is getting power, it wants to stand up. So when you lean it over going 5mph or slower, ALWAYS give the bike at least a bit of power, or it's just gonna fall like we see here in the video. Slow speed turns + pull in clutch and brakes = automatic bike dump. Every time

Leaning the bike is part of the fun for me. I recently got my knee down for the first time on a track, it felt great. this is a great way for new riders to gain that cofnidence!
I am watching as much as possible. I have a couple small bikes. Bought a larger bike. Am having the issues with turns and starting from a stop. Wow. did not know all this. Learning a lot from Jerry. Need to work with my smaller bikes. then go to the big one.

I can’t ride year round, so in the spring I go to a parking lot (after I got my bike ready to go with a fresh oil change, tire pressures, and check over) with my bike and “knock the cobwebs off” by doing figure 8’s and getting back into the groove of riding again. Trust me, it’s a good idea.

Great videos! I'm a former Motor Officer but after an injury 11 years ago stopped riding. Well, i'm riding again , purchased a Honda VTX 1300 and loving it all over again. BUT, .....but I realized I needed some reminders and some refresher videos from you have done the trick. After a couple weeks in a parking lot I feel like my skills are coming back quickly. My neighbors are probably wondering why I ride and ride and ride in circles in my back and front yards! I practice U-Turns in an empty parking lot also, starting with four parking spaces, then three, then two, then reverse direction two, then three, then four. Great video!

I've been going too slow when practicing U-turns or circles. I need to watch my speed next time I practice and make sure I'm going at least 5 mph if not more when practicing and making a conscious effort to lean the bike. Thanks for all you do!

Years ago when I started riding again I bought your DVD and did the drills on a bicycle as I didn’t have a motorcycle yet. I believe it made the class easier to pass as I did very well.
That's me! Haven't ridden in 40 years. Practicing all of the maneuvers on my mountain bike at the High School parking lot before my Harley Riding Academy course next month and my Harley purchase later this year.

Yesterday, at insurance drive up window(yes insurance drive up window), the employee was off getting information for me, a car pulled up behind me.....what I did was turn full right, lean right just a wee bit, start easing out the clutch, I did a nice tight circle pulling in behind the car as it moved up to the window
I got the information and from other companies, wrote the check and went back to that agent, waiting for proof of insurance, same thing happened, I did the same thing just a little faster
If not for your videos, that's twice I would have thought I couldn't do it

Never thought about people having a fear of leaning, it just always came naturally to me whether on a bicycle or on a dirt bike. I suppose that could be a little different with a heavier larger machine I am not used to riding.
It was for me. Went from a honda cr 500 to a HD sporster xl1200l and the world of difference was crazy.
After a number of years off the saddle,I'm thinkin on returning to it with a harley street rod 750,something a little smaller. About to see how rusty I am.
For those who didn't pay attention, at 3:51 in the video you can hear Jerry dragging the floor boards on the ground...at 10 miles per hour!! That's insane! Kudos to you sir!

I had to do this with my Softail CVO Deluxe which is much lower to the ground. I always tell my friends that are new to riding and on touring bikes, If I can do it you can do it, my bike can't lean as far so no matter how fast or how far I lean your bike can go faster and lean further.
