      It always reminds me of a little kid trying to get their sibling in trouble by falling down dramatically - they IMMEDIATELY look to a parent, maybe work up some tears, to see if they can manipulate the situation. The difference, of course, is that a 4-year-old is doing it because their brain is still developing and learning how to regulate emotions and behaviour. These are grown men... ostensibly...

      I get it when defenders were too close but to intentionally awkwardly swing your arms during a shot to tangle with defenders(Harden, Dbook, KD, CP3) is disgusting. As if their shooting form are that wack if there is no defender in front of them.

    I think you really have to see who is initiating the contact. In the last years it always baffled me how physical offensive players are allowed to play, bumping, backing down in the post, bully ball, hard and often moving screens while defenders essentially have to overthink every limb that they are extending more than an inch from their body.
    If an offensive player is unnaturally initiating contact to draw a foul they don't get the call, period. It is not the objective of basketball to run into your defender, it is to get around him and it really has to return to that.

    Good video coach. As a Wolves fan im a little biased. In that Cavs-Wolved game, Jarrrt freakin Allen shot 22 fts!!!! I think that was also boiling under Ant amd Gobert. He was getting a lot of calls im his favor and shot nearly as much FTs as the Wolves by himself.

    All this sneaky grab-ass judo stuff has been a core discipline in NBA defense for as long as I can remember. The state of the art is more subtle than ever. Happens on offense too. Watch Embiid in the low post, he can hip-check a big defender right off the court and make it look like nothing. "IDK, that huge guy just went flying, so weird." It's not just size, either, it's a whole wrestling match down there.

    5:46 I really appreciate that the ref told Ant why there wasn't a call instead of giving him the cold shoulder, like most refs. We need more of that type of communication between players and refs, instead of refs calling techs every time a player breathes in a manner they dislike

    Hand checking is not solving foul hunting. It essentially replaces one problem with a different one. Things are pretty stupid. Dont allow hand checking because it bails out bad defence but also dont reward the players who are driving and charging to an opponents torso.

  • @slutmonke
    @slutmonke Před 2 měsíci +3

    This is a great change. As a defensive focused player myself, having that bent arm down to protect the body when the offensive player is throwing a shoulder to try to create space is critical to cushion and avoid the defender getting cracked ribs. So long as the defensive player isn't significantly shoving them on the ground or initiating significant contact after the offensive player has gone airborne (e.g. to throw them off balance, rather than to cushion their own torso when the offensive player leaps at them), then this should be a no-call. The goal of having foul calls is to minimize injuries, while allowing the maximum intensity of play that isn't likely to cause injury. That's best accomplished by not calling reflexive actions to protect one's own body when the other person is the one initiating or dramatically intensifying contact.

  • @IGqy
    @IGqy Před 2 měsíci +1

    I am a fan. However, a push on the hip on an airborne player should still be called. That is a potentially dangerous play. Slaps on the arms are still shootingfouls and we did just see an example of such a play not being called.
    Yeah, get rid of some of the stuff where offensive players initiate the contact, but an arm on the hip in the air is no good. I like if they allow it while in the ground to better be able to follow the player they are guarding

  • @giveadont

    This is what I have been trying to explain to people who think the changes in officiating over the years just boils down to simply hand checking.
    It isn't just hand checking.
    Offenses were being rewarded for cheap tactics when the defenders were using their hands or arms at all.
    The offense could just throw their arms into defenders: rip-throughs, intentionally locking defenders' arms, jumping back into defenders behind them after pinning them (though it seems they put a stop to that last year).
    Even if they let guys hand check, (and sometimes they do or just miss it happening) it was mostly pointless and just generally risky because offensive players could initiate contact and get a call regardless.
    Hand checking has it's benefits for defenders, but when the offense can just jump into you or throw their arms at your arms, it's impossible to even casually put your hands out.
    When foul-baiting is too easy for the offenses to exploit like that, defenders can't even put their arms where near the offense.
    And that's not really even getting into other advantages that offenses currently get: more leniency on travels when catching the ball or gathering/euro-steps, more leniency on dribbling rules (although they started clamping down on that last year) and, of course, defensive 3-seconds.
    Teams have all figured out the 3pt vs long2s efficiency and spacing hacks.
    As a result, offensive spacing is more appropriately implemented by everyone across the league and defenses are generally more spread out.
    It really makes it feel like a lot of these rule/interpretation-related offensive advantages are kind of antiquated now.
    Offensive strategies have moved beyond the slow-paced, cramped offenses of the early-mid 2000s that sparked all these offense-benefiting rules/interpretations in the first place.

    I think the focus should be that offensive players shouldn’t bank on getting foul calls to score, or maybe rely on less. Foul calls should be a punishment for bad defense, not an incentive for the offense.
