    Good info as always. Pitchers will often talk about the grip, but they don't reference their arm slot, and that has a lot to do with what the ball does.

    A sinker is just a variant of a fastball - right? It has upward rotation like a fastball, unlike a curveball which has downward rotation. My question is this: Why would a ball with fastball-like rotation (upward) have a tendency to "sink"? I don't see how simple seam orientation would make the ball sink.
    He says to "stay on top" of the ball then, at the end of the video, he talks about making sure there is more pressure on the inside of the ball so "it moves the opposite way." That's not staying "on top" of the ball. That seems like cutting the ball slightly; almost like a screwball.

    Nice video. Quick question. The hitting drill your players do where their feet are facing the pitcher but their upper body is facing the plate, can you describe the teaching points of that and the purpose of that drill?

    And what does a sinker look like to the batter?

      Ball will have more downward movement than a normal fastball and some will also have run towards the pitchers arm side. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    Is there any pronation in the wrist when shifting your fingers like this?

    • @MunkeyRC
      @MunkeyRC Před 5 lety +5

      You would throw this like a normal fastball with your standard pronation at release and follow through. The off axis angle of the seams is what allows the ball to drop and run.

    Imagine the Padres drafting this guy #1. The having him only wearing the big club’s uniform a September expanded roster call up…never to play in the show again. To be fair, after the top 11 picks, it was a pretty lackluster draft

    that was a terrible explanation of the sinker; i'd bet his sinker really sucks. you can be an MLB pitcher, and still f'k things up, as a so-called 'expert'. the sinker drops more than the 4 seam, because there's less air pressure being generated by the seams underneath it. and, if you get the orientation of the ball just right, then there's even less air pressure. by throwing it the way demonstrated above, you get more air pressure under the ball, which causes lift. a 4 seam fastball causes maximum lift under the ball, because of its rotation while encountering incoming air at speed. notice, a split-finger fast ball drops a lot more; because it has much less spin. it's depending entirely upon gravity to bring the ball downward...that's the principle involved.
