When my 4 kids were little, we used to go to the local zoo ALL the time. When Covid hit, we quit going (to that and many other things for a while). I remember about a year ago I got kind of sentimental and decided I wanted to take my kids to the zoo, even though they were quite a bit older by then! My oldest refused to go, and my preteen tried to have a good attitude, but I could tell he was underwhelmed. My two younger ones still enjoyed it, thankfully. It was an insignificant thing, but to me it was the sudden realization that things won't ever go back to the way they were. It's so hard on mom to slowly let your kids go and watch them grow up.

Thank you for brining high school content to this space. My oldest is in 10th this year. We had a rough start to high school and I appreciate the wisdom you have shared. I also have a 7th grader and 4th grader. I admit I was in tears with you at the end of the video. I hugged my 4th grader even closer on the coach as you said to savor the years. Absolutely….it goes way too fast 😢

Ditto. I have a 10th & 7th grader. I am feeling my time with them running away from me, yet it is wonderful to see who my kids are becoming. Good advice. I need to be more present with my teens. 🥹

I love that you tweaked this homeschool show and tell. I have a freshman, and love your channel. Thank you. :)

I’m so glad I found your channel! You have such wisdom for the high school years and I’ve yet to find a CZcams homeschooling channel that isn’t pushing affiliate sales, until I found yours! I feel like I need to take a large chunk of time and watch your videos and take notes! I’m starting to panic a little with planning for my up & coming 9th grader for the 24-25 year.

Pure Gold!! Thank you for making this video your own and about older students. I have 4 kids, 10th, 9th, 6th and 3rd grade. Such a wonderful overview of what to prepare for and expect.
Had to laugh at the part of having a field trip bc my boys (older ones) just want to stay home and get their work done as well as keeping things fun. My boys totally humor me when I try to incorporate “fun” things into our weeks.
I totally need ideas in this area!!!
Huge Hug to you! I’m feeling the same way about my older boys…I just have a few more years with them at home and it make me so sad. Totally cherishing everyday that I have with them. ❤

Thank you for your take on this topic. I am just a couple of years behind you, so this was very helpful. It is so important to keep each stage of their life in perspective and to remember to savor them. Our children are only “children” for so long. I pray that my kids grow up to have a kind of faith that makes them want to dive deeper and closer in their walk with the Lord like yours have. ❤

I agree with the “fun” but, they think it’s babyish 😢 The teen years are hard. I am homeschooling my last child. Wait til they get married but, comes the grandkids and that’s a whole different blessing. ❤ I agree treasure every moment, it goes fast.

Abby your content is like no other!!! love it! what do you think of doing a gap year before the grade 10,11,12 years if the teens are not ready for high school?

    • @mypracticallyimperfectlife

One of the beauties of homeschooling is being able to make adjustments and schedule things in a way that works best for your kiddos. If you do a gap year, I would look at what areas you think they need to work on to be best prepared for high school level courses. It could be a great way to just really focus in on those skills that they need to develop whether that is note-taking, reading comprehension, essays, test taking skills, etc.

@@mypracticallyimperfectlife Thank you! Your wisdom is my affirmation that my intuition is right, I thought we should do a gap year this coming school year and prep my teens to be ready for high school courses (they've regressed due to trauma). People tell me do an extra year after grade 12, call it a super senior year, but that makes no sense to me. they would not graduate with their peers. Thank you Abby! Your posts on high school are opening my eyes to things I hadn't been aware of, and will ensure we will be successful for high school. My oldest wants to go into science, but she isn't sure where or how. I have to have her very prepared, so we can discover her calling!
