This is maybe my favorite musical performance of all time. It's like pure emotion without affect - she's barely singing the words; it's like the song is just pouring from her and totally transcends its original meaning and becomes something even more beautiful. Brings me to the brink of tears every time. Nina Simone was a genius the world didn't deserve.
Well said; very well said. I think you divined what her energy was doing during this performance. She let her music 'happen' as distinguished from anticipating what an audience at a world-famous jazz festival might expect of her.
Sheer talent! Inspiring; she put the TIME, PRACTICE, DEDICATION, COMMITMENT, DISCIPLINE, and HEART into it since she was like THREE years old...LOVE IT!
This piece wouldn't be something you could learn, even if it was transcribed. It's only something that you could arrange yourself as a cumulative outlet for different stuff inside you that you've learned through this years-which is pretty much the definition of improvisation. She plays for the sheer joy of it, & sort of as an emotional exorcism. She would've arranged this, but it's doubtful she would've ever played it the same way twice.
what i can’t believe is that after the years of struggle, mental breakdowns.. her talent didn’t fade like other artists who were on slump.. actually it got sharper and went beyond the level of human art.. she could represent her mind with piano like piano is her language.
Am I the only one crying and laughing and signing through this song? Nina playin' Johann Sebastian. More than that, she's entertaining herself and it's as if we're invited to come along for the ride.
No Celaine! You are NOT the only one. I happened upon this tonight, and was devastated in the best possible way. Eddie’s swell, but Nina is divine! Anyone agree? I’m 8 years late Celaine! But I’m with you!
I love how she turned one of her most popular songs which was originally semi-upbeat into almost something almost classical. Legends only. The way her accent throughout the whole song fluctuates is genius.
Put a despair genius piano player in front of the best piano in the world, Bosendorfer Imprerial, at the best jazz festival "the Montreux Jazz Festival" and at last the genius idea of the late M. Claude Nobs, the founder of the MJF, who at the creation of this festival in Switzerland in 1966 took the huge financial decision to video tape every artist ! Thanks to him, we witness this fantastic piano rendition of Nina Simone !
Does anyone else get the Beethoven vibe? I hear a brief Beethoven reference around 4.46 - 4.53, though admitedly I can't name specific pieces that it might be referring to.
This brilliant version is featured at the end of the fascinating documentary "What Happened, Miss Simone?" It is truly magical. I am so glad to have found it here, as I could not locate this exact version among her recordings. It is amazing that she does not watch the keyboard as she plays with such virtuosity. Sheer perfection!!
Caterina Cervellin You are very welcome! I happen to love most documentaries, but this one in particular is one I can't stop watching. From the spare opening notes on the piano, I am helplessly pulled into it time after time after time. So glad you enjoyed it!
Indeed! It was kind of enlighting for me! Many parts of the documentary made me very emotional, I didn't know Nina Simone's life at all and knowing a bit of the complexity of her story give this execution a total new taste. I'll keep watching and reading and wanting to know more about her for sure, thank you again!
My 7 years old daughter already knows of her and her civil right activism. No I am not Afro American but, it is essential for every woman in this planet to learn of her.
she really loved what she had always loved.. classical.. no matter how jazz and blues took over her.. eventually classic fights back and so is this result. beautiful!
I still cannot get over how incredible this version of My Baby Just Cares for Me is. Would love to find a copy of her whole show at Montreux, which this recording seems to have been in 1987.
You can get a DVD 'Nina Simone - Live at Montreux 1976', that includes as a bonus, two tracks from 1987, including this one, and four tracks from Montreux 1990, making 12 in total. The sound is uncompressed PCM so a step up from youtube :)
This ia where the term "tickling the ivories" comes from!! There is no one that can be forceful, tender, elegant, abstract, sorrowful, joyous, simple and complicated at the same time. Whenever an artist gets a big head show them this video and they will shut the fu@k up!
Jazz specialist based in Bach combined with the Righteous Indignation and Activism of a saint. I heard Mrs. Shabaz once say that "she was not out of step with the times, the times were out of step with her"". Once asked if I could go back in time and space and see any performance what would it be; like DUH, Nina of course.
Nina Simone... i regret that I have not discovered you sooner. I found out about your music randomly through a spotify shuffle. It was a familiar tune, good king wenceslas. But apparently it was taking me to a different plAce. Somewhere close to home. And that song was Little girl blue. Madam, in this prformance, I so admire your control. This kind of control and tone shows your classical training. The passages seemed like a Beethoven piano sonata. It was beautiful. Thank you very much for sharing ,your beautiful music with us. May you rest in peace
I love her so very much, it hurts that I can see she's hurting so bad inside. Nina, now in spirit, always know your light still shines bright here on earth, we continue to love and adore you.
Good for you! I am thankful to have known her music for almost all the 56 years of my life, thanks to my wise parents. She continues to be an inspiration. May she be so for you.
4:28 It’s almost as if she was in a trance. Started to sing then stopped. Shook it off and tried again. Eventually just let it go and went with something else. Sheer brilliance. I can’t help but think about the interview she gave later in life saying she always wanted to be a classical pianist. The worlds first black master pianist. But she was denied a scholarship because of her race. She said her life hasn’t been happy as a result. So sad and tragic that she never knew what a blessing and gift she was to so many.
It's the moment of delicious self satisfaction for me... Amid all that she had endured, to make that thing sing so masterfully... To still be able to do this. We salute you maestra
Everytime I return to this stupendous performance, I wish I was there with a basket of tomatoes. To hurl at that dispirited audience. Didn't have to be a thunderous ovation for you to provide a more appreciative reception.
What trips me out about this is that I've never heard any other example of her approaching the song in this way. If there's any other performance like this one, I haven't come across it. The idea that she came up with this on the spot, or for that matter had it worked out but never otherwise played it in public just deepens the mystery of this hypnotic piece
Eine Künstlerin - gezeichnet von Ihrer Kunst - wir müssen dankbar sein ... das es so ein Talent gab... ich glaube es war nicht einfach mit dieser Begabung zu leben...
Simply a fantasic musician who plays with ability, genius and: the most important: her heart to have fun herself AND entertain the audience. This level of maturity to jump and combine Bach with her most welknown song_ My day couldn't have started better :-)
Ms. Nina Simone was one of the most beautiful ladies.. and it’s a beauty that originates from INSIDE and radiates out. Look at her here! Stunning. And a genius
Nina Simone is a genius, God rest her Soul.

Genius - they tried to silence her through medication but could never…❤
Her piano playing is off the chart genius.
Literal music genius! 😩🙌
Yesss! Well said!
This is RIDICULOUSLY BRILLIANT!!! I can’t even HANDLE this! I am just FLOORED!!!!
Like every performance from her!
@@Victoraranha She was truly amazing
SAME!!!!
😍
I've listened to this piece four times and still think it's not humanly possible to do. But then again it is Nina Simone.
Miles Davis thought the same thing. But here we are.
Sheer talent! Inspiring; she put the TIME, PRACTICE, DEDICATION, COMMITMENT, DISCIPLINE, and HEART into it since she was like THREE years old...LOVE IT!

you're absolutely right. and I think you'll enjoy Homer Simpson's take on jazz czcams.com/video/c6SE_PiU7YY/video.html
She is human and divinely gifted.
what i can’t believe is that after the years of struggle, mental breakdowns.. her talent didn’t fade like other artists who were on slump.. actually it got sharper and went beyond the level of human art.. she could represent her mind with piano like piano is her language.
music was her life it pulled her through and saved her over and over. Not drugs and booze like so many others
The prelude to her singing the song she says she is not doing well. I have the DVD of this concert... timeless
Am I the only one crying and laughing and signing through this song? Nina playin' Johann Sebastian. More than that, she's entertaining herself and it's as if we're invited to come along for the ride.
Thank for clarifying it was J S Bach
Which bach piece is this?
No Celaine! You are NOT the only one. I happened upon this tonight, and was devastated in the best possible way. Eddie’s swell, but Nina is divine! Anyone agree? I’m 8 years late Celaine! But I’m with you!

this is beyond a song, this is life, her life in a song, in a piano.....what amazing woman
beyond right word gorgeous woman
This rendition is so amazing. Such a simple song brilliantly arranged... Bach, Phillip Glass, Jazz, boogie woogie, Beethoven all in one.
philip glass??
Does anyone else get the Beethoven vibe? I hear a brief Beethoven reference around 4.46 - 4.53, though admitedly I can't name specific pieces that it might be referring to.
Beautiful Bach infused jazz genius - She took her broken heart and made it into art
love and gratitude Nina x
Indeed it was her broken heart that took the biggest toll on her.

Indeed! All those years of training, dedication, passion and discipline shining through, inevitably!
This is one of the most amazing and beautiful things I've ever listened to
One of those moments in life where you realise the sublime. The beauty of human joy in music. Nina blesses us all with her talent.
I❤this. I Toured with her in 1988. Miss Simone. We have the same birthday. Leah Tunkara
She was always, first and foremost, a classically trained pianist. I truly appreciate and love that she never strayed away from her musical roots.
I watch this performance every day, never seen anything like this Nina Simone is a genius, God bless her soul.
I love this version. The droning, rhyhtmic, groovong quality is everything to me.
great concert piano ,only Nina can switch from jazz to classic music

I have it amazing treasure
Her style is playful, brutal yet delicate. Fantastic!
YES just RAW!
dare i say i prefer this version over the original? She was brilliant!
you may it was mind blowing.
I wish I was in the audience for this performance. I've watched this clip about 20 times now.
I think, in general, her unfiltered live performances are better and more brilliant than her produced album versions. This is tear inducingly good.

she plays the piano so beautifully
Oh my God!!!!!!
I can't stop listening to this, having chills all over! Just wateched Nina's biography movie on Netflix- that's how I found out about her.
