4 month old Belgian Malinois/Dutch Shepherd Shelter Pup Needs Training

  • Abra is a magnificent 4 month old Belgian Malinois/Dutch Shepherd. She was adopted out as a little puppy along with her littermates to what was thought to be an experienced owner of this breed. Sadly, Abra has been returned due to her mouthy nature. A Malinois returned for her mouthy nature? As a trainer, hearing something like that, is like hearing that a Goldie has been returned for licking the kids too much or a Labrador for wagging their tail too much.
Mouthiness goes with the breed. It should really be expected.
So Abra is back at the shelter, absolutely no fault of her own. She’s just being a 4 month old Mal/Shep that has not had any training or socialisation.
Now she needs a whole lot of it. They don’t call them land sharks or Maligators for nothing. She snapped along the whole way on our bush walk. Chomping on the dogs, affectionately chomping on Luke’s arm, bottom etc …
But these dogs are truly magnificent. They’re a lot of dog trainers’ dog of choice. They’re so smart and all they want to do is work and train and to the very highest level of perfection.
We have expressed to Dee that we’d be happy to take Abra on and train her. However, Dee has a great lead for someone who would be perfect for Abra as a home with experience. We hope this works out for Abra, she really needs someone who understands her to step forward and be her world.
Abra is a good example of a dog that needs an owner that understands the breed. And how it can not work out so well for a dog like Abra if they simply don’t.
Whilst Dee will be contacting someone in the Hope they’ll take on Abra, if you yourself are an experienced owner of this breed and have successfully trained them in the past and would be interested in Abra please also get in touch with Dee at the shelter.
Again, we’re here for Abra if she needs. What a beautiful girl she is.
After working hard at being the great social workers they are, the farm dogs went for a much deserved swim in the pool.

One more quick comment. When Luke said so many people don’t praise dogs when they do nothing when they could have made a different choice, that is SO true. When walking my dogs and we come across a dog that hasn’t been socialized and tries to bite one of mine, my dogs just walk away, like ‘you’re not nice and I don’t want anything to do with you’. I praise them profusely for choosing that reaction.

It seems that it just doesn't occur to people to praise in that situation. But that is the difference between being taught by a trainer or figuring it out for yourself.

Somehow it seems to help them navigate their surroundings. When she was a baby before her smelling ability took over, she always had that special movement rythum. God has really blessed tht little girl she just can do anything.

And honestly should be THEE shining example of why they deserve just as much of a chance at a beautiful life as any other dog.... I have called her my Mighty mighty Miss Violet since the beginning.... Because absolutely nothing stops her from literally living every single second to the most... Whether that's napping or swimming or anything in between..... Abra is gorgeous, but as Luke says they are a serious dog, not really family pet material unless they get loads of mental stimulation let alone exercise. I've seen them doing really well at agility. This is a breed that definitely needs training from the outset and Luke's the right person to help her along. She could be a fabulous dog.

Serious is the word for the malinois breed. My place of work had malinois and bouvier des flandres in the security teams. All the dogs were down to business when required but only the bouviers would relax and enjoy petting when allowed. The malinios were "no thank you, keep your distance" and would sulk when the officers allowed us to sit in the front seat of the vehicles on the way to the parking lot! It was if they felt they had been demoted!😂

Thinking about what Luke said regarding the litter and how they would all be play biting constantly. If that's all that Abra has experienced to this point... high intensity... I can only imagine how baffled she must be by the calm energy of the pack. I remember the point when Shadow let all of her angst go when she realized that "this was real" and she could let her guard down and trust. It was so visible... her ears softened, her shoulders relaxed, her "grimace" was gone. I couldn't help but cry with happiness for her.

They do require a lot of training and socializing and desensitizing them but maybe one day when u have the time and money to do it u can get one ,I have a dog in protection work and it's so much fun having your dog's in activities just watching them work it will really amaze you on what your dog can do ,I Am not very big so I have a handler do the bite work and my dog gets so excited when the bite sleeve and or the bite suit comes out, they are very smart ,I love when someone can get their dream dog and they are going to make all the right sacrifices and denication it requires to do it right,to see high prey drive working dogs live there best lives possible is so beautiful to me,it's so sad that some people get high prey drive working line breed of dogs and they don't know what they are doing or they don't want to sacrifice the time and money it takes to do it right, all animals cost money to own but I can say from my personal experience that it does cost more owning high prey drive dogs just because of the dog activities but it's so worth it, I have all 3 of my dog's involved in different activities and yes it cost me money but it's worth every penny of it , I can honestly say that I get way more back out of my dog's then I put in to them ,it's not that hard if you find a great trainer who will help you and if you find a good mentor my uncle has one and his breeder will even train the puppies and let someone pick up their dog by the time it's around 6 months old that is trained ,u can also find a breeder like that, but those puppies do cost more but it would be worth it for some one who needs help with training

It sounds like they really did everything they could to match Abra with the right owner. I got an anxious mix breed from a rescue and when I came to the vet with her the first time they happily told me that my couch potato was a high energy working dog that needed a job! In fact, I think he said "I've been waiting for one of these, but they're just never available", or something to that effect. He made a great connection with Alba.
