HOW TO TEACH THE OUT COMMAND! BASIC FIRST STEP! BELGIAN MALINOIS TRAINING

- After many requests, I have finally made a video on how I like to begin teaching the Out command! This is my 11 month old client board and train Belgian Malinois named Fiona. This video is the FIRST time I have done this with her and I posted the session totally unedited! I believe it is important to teach this command without conflict, which means it will take time! By no means in this video will you see a finished product, BUT, you will see the very first session which will hopefully paint a picture on how this will continue to progress. As I always say, use these videos as inspiration, and don't necessarily copy step for step. Know your dog and what is best for them!
Would love to hear your feedback in the comments! How is your dog reacting to this technique?
My Patreon starts March 1, 2022! The first month will have detailed unedited videos on Fiona's progress among other videos!

Thank you everybody for the support! We're just getting warmed up!!
HAPPY TRAINING! QUIT RUSHING!!!
OmG (10 years of Mal ownership) mind officially BLOWN 🤯 lol
I subscribed on this video because this is an uncut training session. It's fantastic to just be able to observe a great trainer and their dog develop the process without the cherry picked "that was perfect" cuts most trainer videos I've seen provide. I get it, trainers want to show case the 'right' way to do it, but I'm sure the temptation with many is also to showcase their own skills. Uncut like this video is brave but I think the most valuable for viewers like me. Thanks man!
For example, one of the most interesting parts of the video for me is the first time the trainer let the tug fall to the ground on the switch. I was thinking, wait how is he going to pick that up without the dog going for the tug on the ground as he reaches for it (which I'm sure is what my guy would do). Instead there was a few seconds of good play to ensure engagement and a casual pickup followed by good play as he moved the item behind his back. Gold!
Thank you very much 🙏🏼
I agree.
I enjoy a good ‘highlight reel’ as much as anyone else, but I admit my favorite training sessions to watch are uncut with a dog that is new to training.
@@joefish6546 Good eye!! I appreciate it 🙏🏼🙏🏼
thank you very much Andy I did this technique with my 5 months GSD and he loved it. but I need to know how can I let him Out or drop when I ask please
This is all very true! On the flipside tho when you do show your mistakes people tear you apart on social media. It's kinda sad 😔 but love this guy's videos very talented trainer and awesome doggos.
I wish you had a part 2 on this video. It would be really helpful. Liking your videos. 👍🏼
Thank you Andy !!! I'm waiting for the next steps 😊
Awesome session! Thanks for sharing!
love this training style you really get this and I understand you ❤️
Thanks for the session ! Please keep us posted with the next steps (progression) !
I will do my best! More sessions and breakdown will be available with Fiona on my Patreon next month. It does cost $ just a heads up, but does involve much more in depth training 🙏🏼
Thank you Andy 🙏 can’t wait for the Patreon
Thank you! 🙏🏼

You make it make sense, thank you!
Love hearing it, thank you 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Great stuff Andy!!!
Awesome video! Appreciate the breakdown of steps.
Thanks 🙏🏼
brilliant video, really enjoyed it and you explained very well and clearly
I did this with my 16 week old malinois and it took 2 reps. He got it . 👌🏼
Nice!!
Thank You, gonna try
After watching Andy's videos, I see what I'm doing wrong. Thank you Andy.
Awesome video! You told me how to do this a couple of weeks ago. Great to see it in action!
Awesome! 🙏🏼
Great video(s). Thank you so much! Making it very easy to understand my Malinois.

Thanks for the content!
Great session as usual! Thanks for sharing and when we get a new pup, I'll be joining your Patreon

Thank you. I have 7 mon GS I’m teaching. I love the tug and switch. Exercise and mental work.
Yes!
Good system!
I used this kind of technique with my Amstaff, and then perfectioned It with multiple flat silicon frisbees to make It an instant out, worked like a charm!
I used this kind of technique with my Amstaff, and then perfectioned It with multiple flat silicon frisbees to make It an instant out even from distance, worked like a charm!
Greta content, as always. I will be subscribing to your Patreon in the coming weeks.
Thank you 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Great lesson thank you please make more so we can see the whole process of the out command
Great training session. Can’t wait to work with my dog on Switch
Excellent video 👍 thank you Andy. So glad you have a few videos teaching how to play tug with a pet dog for the first time. I volunteer at a shelter and many of the dogs will be adopted as pets rather than working dogs, and this helps a lot
Awesome!
Thank you
Great videos 🙂
Thank you 🙏🏼
Sick vids man!
Working hard … I got a stubborn one!! Or maybe it’s just me! Lol! Thanks for the awesome content !!
I’m a new subscriber and I love the way you train the dogs, I have a 9 weeks Belgium and you are helping me so much, thanks 🙏🏼
Love to hear it! Thank you 🙏🏼
Hi.
How can i get a malinois ?
Very intelligent training mate 🇦🇺🐏👍😎
Good one👌
Very nice! I think the old-school compulsion methods to teach "out!" are (at least partly) to blame for having dogs that grow up to "hate" the out command. I've seen this so often; Mals that will let go on cue, grudgingly, to avoid e-collar pressure. But then, these little lightning quick "flash bites" they take when they were supposed to just apprehend the decoy. I believe that with your method, that would not happen, as the dogs don't feel they're being deprived of the bite. Great work, and you've got a nice tug-collection there, plus a very nice property, with that lake as well!
Thank you! 🙏🏼
Yes agreed. Anything taught with conflict will not hold up over time or look good 🙏🏼
you really make it fun for the dog !
eye buggers ... hate em 😆
😆🙌🏻🙏🏼
This is what I'm looking for
Good! 👍🏻
Nice job🙂
Thanks
Great session!! Gonna work with my guy Whiskey tomorrow with this. Thanks
Great! 💪🏼💪🏼
You are the best…
This video is amazing Andy. I feel like a lot of comments you say about bad trainers or don’t do this or stop doing that is aimed at me so you can call me out in your next video 🤣🤣🤣 . Im learning something new everyday especially from you. Thanks again.
Love it! 🙌🏻 Naww not calling you out! But most do experience the same mistakes and questions. I only know because I’ve made every mistake in the book 3x over! 😂
Thanks for the support 🙏🏼
i learned a lot from your videos
🙏🏼
I normally use a small soft treat instead of 2 identical toys. Give the "out" present treat. Then instantly back to toy. I've always worked on building trust that I'm giving the dog something better then back to play. I don't want your toy. I've always had fast release times. I will try your way today. You're a good teacher. My kids are learning from you as well with their malinois. Stay warm up there in the buckeye state.
Awesome! Love to hear it!
Food is definitely possible to use effectively when teaching. I’d consider this the next step up 🙌🏻
I would love to see the progress I just ordered two identical tugs to start switch THANK YOU THANK YOU 😊
Thank YOU!
Amazing video as always!!! Will you ever do a video on how to train bark and hold?
This is a big topic! Depends on a lot. I will think about what I can do in this. Thanks for the suggestion!
I get bit quite a bit. Sometimes it is bad presentation, sometimes it is bad targeting, one time it was that I got the soft version of the tugs you use here and a hard strike took the tug and my hand (I then bot the firm version). I know if you ain't bleeding, you ain't training, but I am 67, and have old man skin--like crepe paper--I bleed a lot. So, I got some cut resistant gloves intended for kitchen work. Made a big difference for me.
@17:16 Please try not to forget! I personally love the Fi-Fi videos! 😉
😃😃😃🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Hey Andy you think you can make a video on how your dog should eat when and how? The specifics to help out any new owner of a malinois, and also when you give them kibble for when you're training and when that should be?
Great idea! This may be better to address in one of my live q&a’s 🤔🙏🏼
Greetings Andy, I am a 76-year-old combat Purple Heart Vietnam Veteran. I have just been blessed with an English Lab, he has been trained by Clear Path for Veterans in Unstate NY. for two years prior to going there to train with him and then to return home. My service dog is trained for 38 cues, and I am now learning. Seeing your jacket in "How to Teach The Out Command, I see the advantage to the near surround pocked configuration. I would like to know where I can order one for myself. Your videos are so well done, Thank you for them!
Thank you! Demanet makes good vests 👍🏻
Wow
Hopefully that’s a good wow 😆🙌🏻
Andy - Please tell me WHERE you bought the green balls! And, all of your other toys/tools? THANK YOU! LOVE your videos; you rock! I have learned SO MUCH FROM YOU!!!! 🙂
I see what you did there Andy. Really love how you are utilizing the natural behaviour of the dog to create success for her and you. And I'm a big fan of the 'conflict free' you explained. I was already working with 2 identical toys like this, but am wondering: how do you move from the swtich to the actual 'out' command?
Once the dog has Switch totally down, I then preface it with their name. What starts to happen is the dog hears the name and starts to anticipate letting go. Then I can introduce the Out and reward by letting them re bite the same toy instead of switching.
This is a very condensed version of the steps! And there are a ton of ways to do it, this way just works well for me. Also since I compete in French Ring, it is in the rules that the handler must say the dog’s name before Out. So I like to start that early 👍🏻
@@AndyKrueger thanks!
@@AndyKrueger I'm a little confused so after they master switch you then change the word to the dogs name so you'd say "Fiona" and wait for the dog to out then reward the toy? or say the dogs name then show the toy to get them to switch? once they start anticipating outing when you say "Fiona" you then move onto using one toy and do what? do you just say "out" and wait for them to let them bite the same toy or use their name then when they let go of that one toy let them re-bite and then randomly say "ous" and reward when they let go?
A brilliant video thank you, my pup is doing great with the switch of the toy, can you help with stage 2 of the out command please. Thanks
Check my newest video 👍🏻
I love this! Where did you get those tug toys, I want to do this with my goldens.
Gappay 👍🏻
Great technique!
Also, would like to know your training vest brand and your source for your variety of tug toys/equipment. Thanks.
Thanks! Vest is from Gappay
Toys from all over the place!😆🙌🏻
very very helpful! Thank you for your video! What are your thoughts on working a dog who seems to have forgotten the "out" when on a bite sleeve? Best to go back to the basics?
Forgot or chooses not to do it? 😉
Negative reinforcement is best 👍🏻
Great video for starting the out. I've got a 12wk Mali pup and she likes this game. Could I ask what is the best way to end this session? Also could you please share the links to the progression videos for this skill? Many thanks
Definitely on your way to 1 million subscribers but where do I get that training gear you’re wearing because it’s not available at your store
Awesome videos, pragmatic and strait forward. Can you please tell me what is the brand and model of the jacket you were wearing on this video? Those extra rear pockets are very helpful to do these trainings. Please let me know. Thanks.
this is a certified hood classic
Great vid, do you have follow up videos to this up to the point that desired result is had with the out command ?
Sorry I do not
So, question: when or how should you enter/change the command into "out"?
Nice video by the way man!
Another super video! Between this and your recent “play tug” video, my play sessions with my dog have improved massively!!
Quick question a bit out of context: how do you get your dog to run back when playing fetch? Mine runs to the toy/ball but walks on his way back to me. I’d like him to have more energy and run when coming back. Any thoughts?
Love to hear that 🙏🏼
Actually my next video will somewhat address this! Also, in March on my Patreon I will be releasing several videos pertaining to this. The Patreon costs $, just a heads up, but I go into way more detail than here on CZcams 🙏🏼🙏🏼
@@AndyKrueger thanks so much for the reply! Awesome, I’ll be looking for your next video ;)
I’ve been eyeing your Patreon haha 😆 you’ll get a new subscriber almost certainly. Really like your energy and the way your break down and explain what you do, learning a lot from that!! Looking forward to the more detailed videos!
@@SWTAlucard 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Question how old is that puppy.
I have a 9 months old Belgian Malinois that just started to train and he is doing pretty well learning the command within few days of training….
Thanks for your teachings I love training my dog …
Where do you buy these toys and all of your other tug toys and sleeves?
Can you please post the following sessions on the out command? How do you progress from "switch" to "out"?
If I get a dog in for training and teach this, then yes!
Can you please tell me the name of the tug ball you’re using and where to get them? I think it looks like a firehose material but can’t tell for sure! I raise and train Catahoula Leopard Dogs, and I LOVE your training techniques, especially for the working dog breeds! Thanks so much for making CZcams videos!❤

What would you suggest if my dog adds the leash he is on into the mix of the two switch items? He runs off with the toy if I don’t have him in a leash for this training. Also what if the switch doesn’t occur, meaning doesn’t want to let go and switch. Thanks so much! This video was very helpful.
I like that you don’t use out at first
2:48 😂👍
Love your vest or jacket. Where can I get one?
Great explanation! I need to slow down because I GO TO FAST. Lol. Would this be necessary to teach if your dog doesn’t like to bite and hold?
Thanks! I believe it is necessary. First, it can actually increase a dog’s desire to bite and hold once they understand it’s an interactive game. Second, if one day your dog grabs something they shouldn’t, you have a way to communicate to them to let it go 🙏🏼
Where can I get those tug toys? They look very sturdy and my dogs are really good at tearing things apart.
Yes, where do we get those?
Question - my Mal Dutch always goes for the handle even if I cut them off. How do I get him to want the tug? I think it might be the too much or little back pressure of the tugs maybe? Any info is appreciated!
Backtie!
Where di you get the Tug Toy used in this video??
Hello
Is everyday something different that you teach her, or do you teach the same thing for a week or so
Question! Would you be able to do a video teaching a good item hold? Im kinda struggling teaching it for duration and without chewing/moving it in his mouth.
Good idea! This is possible yes 👍🏻
How do you "stop" the playing time when coming home?
Question Andy. When bringing the dog back to the crate, and your allowing them to hold the tug until it gets there, what do you do to make them out it before they get into the crate? I know you can try food and what not, but if the dog is really possessive over the toy, just wondering if you fake like your gonna switch to the other toy and just not give it or something else.
I apply pressure/ lift up on their flat collar until they spit it 👍🏻
Is your ‘switch’ just when you have two tugs that are the same and you’ll also teach an ‘out’ separately?
Yes absolutely. But I like this first because it teaches a fast/ clean let go with no conflict 👍🏻
Hi. Nice videos! Never have i used the command out- i have used drop it though. Should one be used instead of the other? What are your thoughts? Thank you for any advice! Have a good day
Totally up to you what you want to call what. But I use the dog’s name then Out because that’s what’s required by the rules in the sport I compete in 👍🏻
@@AndyKrueger Hi. I understand you can say or command with whatever you want as long as your consistent and you get the results you want or are looking for. Im guessing its like the place command also. I was asking just as someone working there dog is all. Good to learn new things is all. Thank you again for the videos and taking the time to answer back. Have a good night
@@rayjrdibenedetto867 🙏🏼
Great video Andy! What is the brand of this toy toy? I couldn’t find it online!
Sorry I’m not sure!
Where did you buy those tug ball toys ?
So how do you do this with a dog that has resource guarding issues with toys?
As the trainer you must learn how to change the dog’s mind about the activity. Every dog is very different so there is not one approach 🙏🏼
What are the ball on string called?
Tried this and got nailed within 30 seconds. Ah well! Back on the horse I guess
Yep! Dog training is difficult!
Looking at where this young female is in her bite development, I wonder if you have criteria re; how well the dog is biting before thinking about starting the out?
Of course.
However this is a 3 week board and train and she is a pet dog. So obviously criteria depends on the dog and the goals 👍🏻
What is that tug you're using called? And where do you get your tugs?
Gappay 👍🏻
I have a 2 months old belgian tervuren puppy how many months can i start training my puppy?
My Malinois has a great out but I have trouble ending the game, she just seems to know when the games over then we get into conflict when she won’t give up her tug.I am going to start the switch game with her .She is 7 and I trained the switch when she was a youngster.Back to basics I guess
Well, if she will not let go, then I’d say she doesn’t have a great out!
Back to basics but you must be much less predictable to the dog 🙏🏼
Where do you get the tugs
Where can I get those exact toys
can i say leav it instead of switch?
I have totally poisoned the out cue! All on me, I see it now, I created such conflict with my dog. I say "out" he holds harder!
What's the next step after this one?
What would you suggest for those of us that don't have the strength or ability to engage like you do?
Then I’d hire a trainer to teach it 👍🏻
Hey where do you get your equipment from? I’m new to the breed I have a 4-5 month old pup and need major help. Thanks!
One important thing to know is that brands/ toys are not important to the dog. You could play with a stick or old t shirt with the dog and use an old rope as a leash. A lot of new owners think they need all this fancy equipment BUT it will not help to train the dog at all. It is about YOU not the equipment 🙏🏼
@@AndyKrueger ima watch your videos and do my best to train
@@thegomezfamily6695 Awesome! I also HIGHLY recommend researching local dog trainers in your area and hiring one asap! Even if it’s just for a few lessons. Leerburg.com has great training videos and equipment as well 👍🏻
@@AndyKrueger thank you again! I definitely need assistance so I will be looking! My pup just has a lot of energy which is to be expected! But finding ways for him to get it out and train is the hard part as a person new to breeding and training
Anyone know what the name of those toys are?
Can I apply your training to my American bulldog?
Can you post a link to those tugs?
Is it important to have the same color toys? Does color have value for dogs?
Nope! Different colors are just fine!
