That's a full-on #Pro Guide, thanks for sharing 🌄 🙌
Thanks, GoPro!
WOW!
@@DroneKingsInDarwin right?
NOTE: These settings are all valid for sunrise time lapses as well! The only difference is you will want to begin filming your sunrise time lapse about one hour before the official sunrise time and then allow the time lapse to continue for about two hours after the official sunrise time. Enjoy!
Thanks man! Just got a hero 12 and have been doing time lapses, it's been so long since I've messed with settings like this I appreciate the refresher course. 😂
You’re welcome! Have fun! The GoPro is a great time lapse camera. I use it often for this purpose.
Perfect tutorial. My question about settings for sunrise I was going to ask at the end of the video was answered in your pinned comment 👌. I have a 4 night layover in Singapore December 2024 and wanted to get as much help as I can regarding making some time lapse videos when there. Your tutorials will most certainly help. (especially about sudden light changes regarding incorrect ISO settings)
Always look forward to your videos. Thanks for the tips
You’re welcome and thank you!
Such a great video for us mortals. Thanks
You’re welcome.
Lovely sunset time lapse. Thank you for the tips.
You’re welcome.
So so very helpful, thank you!!
You’re welcome!
Dude, amazing yet easy to follow content. Thank you very much!
I appreciate your feedback and am glad you found this useful.
@@GreatDayForAHikeI’m not sure how to edit this in Lightroom Classic do I reference your long photography video?
Thank you for the tips.
You’re welcome!
Perfect tutorial! Great thanks for tips!
And what interval best for 4K 60fps timelapse? 1sec 2sec or 5? It looks we need save in photo mode to get proper 60fps smooth video, right? So it is only 5 sec available as minimum.
Thank for sharing Sir
You’re welcome
Thanks for all your great tips!! Wife got me a gopro 11 for my birthday and I would be lost without your help. Keep up the great work!!
You’re welcome! That’s a great birthday gift! Enjoy!
@@GreatDayForAHike do you have any tips on settings for Skiing and snorkeling/diving by chance?
Great video and guide! Though my question is, what is the difference between the normal Timelapse mode and the Nightlapse mode? Is one better than the other when it comes to sunrises and sunsets?
Very good ! Congratulations
I appreciate it!
Thanks
You’re welcome.
I have used these settings for sunset Timelapse’s. Whilst the sunset has been captured great, the sun cannot be seen, appearing as a glow rather than a clear circle like with my iPhone.
Do you have any tips on what settings I should change to make this work?
Do i need to click long press in screen and lock the exposure where sun is going to rise?
Nice video.
Thank you.
Wow! Much thanks for sharing. Eliminates my having to "experiment." Can't wait to "shoot." Now have to wait for Mother Nature to provide the right conditions. Aloha.
You’re welcome and I hope you have some great sunsets to capture very soon.
The best GoPro tutorials out there, by far! Thank you.
I have one question though - my GoPro 9 doesn't have vibrant or natural color modes, only flat and GoPro. Any recommendation as to which one to choose in case I want to time lapse a sunrise?
I appreciate it. If you want to use video mode and not edit I recommend GoPro for the color mode. If you want to do photo mode and edit I recommend flat mode.
@@GreatDayForAHike many thanks, much appreciated.
Great video. Would help to mention why some settings are greyed out in the photo mode. It's because RAW is selected. If you change RAW to standard, you may not be able to play around too much with your editing and color grading in LR, but it will allow you to change the greyed options like the lens (wide, linear or narrow) and the interval settings to below 5 seconds.
Thank you for your feedback and helpful tips!
Fantastic tutorial! For 3 hours with the photo settings, how big an SD card do we need?
Thank you! Great question. I recommend having at least a 64GB MicroSD card. At a 5 second interval with RAW photos and JPG photos this will typically add up to about 30-40 GB total.
Hey man, great tutorial. I wanted to ask you about shutter speed. Do you use auto shutter speed for the sunset?
Great question. In this one I did use auto shutter but if I use an ND filter for some time lapse/sunset motion blur then I typically do 1/48 or 1/60 for the shutter speed. It adds a nice smoothness effect.
@@GreatDayForAHike Thanks for the answer and the video.
Ondine understand the sharpness side. Set to low and add in editing. I use FCP and I just don’t notice a difference.
I think it depends on the scene as to how much difference this makes with the sharpness setting.
awesome settings. thank you for sharing. one small problem for me is that it didn't last 3 hours. how did your SD card time said 999? what are you using as far as memory card goes? thank you :)
Did you fill up an entire card following this recommendation?
I’m using a SanDisk Extreme 512GB MicroSD card. I have found having at least a 128GB card is helpful for the photo mode.
I just got a Hero 10 and mine does the same thing, even when there was only one or two videos.
Hello I tried the video setting on my GoPro 11 (with 5.3k chosen instead of 4k) on a sunrise however it’s quite grainy at the start while it still darkish. Why would this be?
I recommend making sure your ISO Min and ISO Max are set to no higher than 200 for each. This will mean the sunrise will start off dark and fade into light. The opposite of a sunset and the low ISO will prevent noise.
Hey do you locked the exposure ? Because my sunrise shot was totally overlit at the end :/
Great question. I generally do not lock the exposure when shooting sunrises or sunsets but I do usually set the EV comp to -.5 or -1.
have you used Native white balance before and would you suggest of using it?
I have and it can be useful in certain situations. It would not be a problem to use it for this situation and to then adjust the white balance as needed when editing.
@@GreatDayForAHike that is nice to know, i've been googling and most recommended Leeming LUT.
Wood these settings work for the DJI Osmo action or Action 2
Most of these settings would translate well to the Osmo Action or Action 2. Of course a few settings will have different specific names on the DJI cameras but the same concept.
Why use time lapse if you can use Time Warp? Just curious. I've been using Time Warp with some great results. I enjoy your videos. Keep them coming!
Great question. You could use Time Warp as well. The main reason to use Time Lapse mode is due to this mode offering some additional options to customize the parameters. However, if you just want a video time lapse straight out of the camera you could use Time Warp mode as well. Thanks.
Are there any overheat or battery issues when shooting sunset timelapse for several hours?
No, I have not had any issues with time lapses. This is because a time lapse is a relatively light task for the camera due to the camera only capturing one frame every few seconds or longer.
@@GreatDayForAHike Great!! Thank you!!
I want to shoot while the plane is taking off, is 0.5 ok?
Yes that should work.
@@GreatDayForAHike thanks
i tried using your method and my gopro got superhot and restarted. any tips ?
Were you in time lapse mode? It is unusual for a GoPro to get hot in time lapse mode. Also, what MicroSD card do you use? Not using a card on theGoPro recommended list could cause overheating.
No overheating issue for 1-2 hours ? Please advise. Thanks.
Yeah I’ve not ever had overheating issues with time lapses.
