- A bionic revolution is brewing, as recent advancements in bioengineering have brought about scientific breakthroughs in rehabilitation for people with disabilities. The most cutting edge research is happening inside the human brain, where implanted technology allows people to communicate directly with computers, using their thoughts.
VICE's Wilbert L. Cooper travels to Zurich to see the first-ever bionic Olympics and discovers a host of technologies that are expanding what it means to be human.

After 24 years in a wheelchair...I can't wait to see what will come in the next few years...I need to live long enough to walk again. Bring on the science!
I have hope for ya man! Make those calls!
You only live once!
Good luck man with all this stuff I’m sure it’s not to far
Hope you are doing well
I sincerely hope you do get to walk again.
all the best, michael!
this actually is more than just technology. to these ppl it's hope and possibilities.
@darwinianmenace
I see u as man of culture.
Technology is shaping people's lives in a more positive way. But seriously tho... don't chop ur arm off or do anything stupid just to get a cybernetic body.
Just wait for the sex robot Brothels
@darwinianmenace you are 100% right my guy let's just hope this happens quick😊
Cyber age.
the guy with Parkinsons was truly remarkably, instantaneous results in his speech and motor functions. excited to see what the future holds
I've got a loved one with PD and it made me cry... my grandpa has had it for ~15 years and even with medication (which becomes less effective over time) he just can't relax his arm like that, let alone that range of movement.
Wow what results
He needs some weed and Parkinson will go away
ya some mushroom balls for sure.
That was insane results, just think where we would be in 50years time.
Probably one of the most heartwarming peace’s I’ve seen in a while. Technology being used to improve upon people’s lives who’ve been suffering
A good way to remember is PIEce of PIE
I definetely need all the help I can get guys thanks
Life is suffering. The key is to find something of enough value to you to justify the pain
L. Ron Hubbard and if you believe in after life and haven't followed a christian lifestyle you will suffer in eternity
Shit there I go again
Homie was paralyzed and they made his actual legs work. That’s absolutely mind boggling
Things are gettin' nuts!
3d printing, artificial intelligence and robotics are going to become a bigger part of the medical field. I really would have liked to learn more about the newest robotic arms
It’s stories like this, that make me have hope for the future.
Someone had to say it😁 I hope you had an awesome day!
Anonymous Panacea, that’s the problem, everyone is so focused on the negative things to the point that you can’t just take a positive win for what it is.
@@NYPATRIOTBX I agree👍🏻
It's beautiful. I'm in tears.
Makes me Proud to be a Biomedical Engineer
Ahhh yes subzerogamerxx the biomedical engineer
Thank you for putting in the work to become one!!! Not all heros wear capes.
Same here! :P
Mike 1412 We dabble in a little bit of everything like chemistry, physics, human anatomy & physiology to circuit patching, soldering, medical imaging and even a bit of coding
Respect my friend I support this.
When I’m stress of med school I watch this videos and know that I’m doing what I love. Bless this investigators and doctors. Hope one day I can be one too
It’s amazing how far technology has come and yet we’ve barely scratched the surface of the possibilities of what tech can do. I dream of the day i can use this new technology to finally walk
Amazing tech. Couldn't help but shed a little tear of happiness for these guys.
quannifer yup me neither 👌🏼
1995: Ghost In The Shell is just science fiction
2020: LOL Cyberbrains with thought controlled computers and cyborgs live among us
@Rich Perez what's your point exactly?
as per Gabriel: sci Fi is the best genre as it is fantasy that may become reality 👌☺️🤘
They talking supersoldiers by 2050 bro
Gabriel I suggest you also watch another Vice video they made recently; it's named "How To Hack A Human Brain"
As for me....Can't wait to meet the "Pupper Master"
Skynet is real it's always been real.
It's still an EVA ripoff
Smiled all the way through. That's some good content.
Amazing how the lives of these people are changing
I have a rare SCI called Brown-Sequard syndrome.
I have no use of my left hand and very little use of my left leg.
I would love to be one of your guinea pigs, just tell me how!
Makes me Proud to be a BioMechanical Engineer.
When nature fails, humanity succeeds
Please divert my taxes to cybernetic limbs and other stuff like this instead of endless wars for Israel, thanks
I wish you could choose what your money went to
Just imagine if humans got along and put money into technology rather than war
The endless wars are for the USA
I’m with you there buddy
Based?
These technologies are very inspirational. I am happy to hear more positive news like this!
Vice, you're doin it. 1,000,000 more videos like this please! Cutting edge and heartwarming :)
Wow. This is just amazing. I'm overwhelmed with gratitude. We are all so lucky to have such brilliant minds dedicating their abilities to help others. This is truly astounding.
My friends often calls me a cyborg because of all my operations, have artificial blood vessels and titanium screws(like 32 screws) in my body, but these guys are more cyborg then me :)
Where do you have the actificial blood vessels if you don't mind me asking?
@@spritemultipack The aorta(from the heart) and the renal arteries to my left kidney( only have one kidney left). This was made 2006 so was only 17yr then.
@@PirrePirre I'm assuming the problem with the aorta was congenital? What is your max physical output like with the artificial aorta?
Genuinely made me cry. These people are heroes, both making and using this technology
As soon as that guys hand did a 360 I was like dam futures wild
Very inspiring and powerful video! Kudos to you VICE.
Over 80% tremor reduction in seconds for Terry. Absolutely astonishing. 6:58
Such a mix of emotions here. I’m really happy for the people that are doing what they can to regain some movement and at the same time helping future generations from the research
Once again, watching Vice I’m speechless 😶 absolutely amazing
As much as this is amazing, I feel money will limit so many peoples access to this.
Pushing the gap between those that have and have not even greater.
It's sad in them terms that so many will miss out on this, no matter how good tech gets.
Just give it time, as tecnology advances it becomes more accessible. Just think about computers, the first one was the size of a room and now we have it at our pockets.
3D printers should make it replicatable and cheap. Look at GPUs of computers, powerful cards go for only few hundred bucks where it would costs millions back in the day to replicate 2% of its power.
This is so cool, I’m almost speechless at how far this type of tech has gotten
Interesting segment. Great job, as always Wilbert 👍🏾
Cue The Deus Ex: Human Revolution main theme
I never asked for this

OH YES.

Bruh Vice has been killing it lately. This is true journalism. Keep it up
It just makes me happy to see this excitement and hope in their eyes.
U can really feel what it means to them
5:05 that visualization for brain anatomy is beautiful! What is it?
I can identify the structures much easier than anything else I’ve encountered for learning.
Wow that the most riveting video I’ve watched in a while!
This is very emotional. Rooting for Humanity!!!
Absolutely amazing thank you guys for working so hard for such amazing content
Sooooo excited for the future!
Inspiring asf man ❤️✊🏽✊🏽
did anyone else cry when you young man was able to move his hands with his thoughts
Wow that implants for sever spinal injury is absolutely phenomenal. Wow I am impressed! I hope he is going further treatment out of USA and gets help. Fracture spinal and replacement is not easy, but possible.
LOL, there's a Cylon poster at 11:17
Being able to deliver feedback is a game changer. That's absolutely phenomenal.
Chinese Tech Companies: "hmm interesting..."
Whatever US is doing multiply by a couple of times and that's where Chinese are at in the same fields. Stealing patents is obviously there, but you won't even understand how fucking serious how great their speed of innovations and new tech. And extract Christian etics of western science, like fucking human DNA manipulation and shit. Search for new information other than government propaganda.
This makes me cry.
Great keep this zeal going
This is truly amazing technology and I am in awe the only issue I have with news stories like this is how are the companies making money? It's slightly cynical of me to think if there are any ulterior motives to this business but companies want to make money and how do it, who gains the most, who controls it? Any ideas?
This legit made me cry in happy tears :)....
This left me absolutely speechless 🙌🏾👏🏾
Really smart people out there that invent these things.
Really appreciate these scientists who make people's life better.
i love vice..thank you
Imagine how it’d be in the future🤔
Rich Perez I think he means like couple thousand years.
And get on board with climate awareness so that our future generations get the opportunity to experience a future
Salz Berry mmmmmmmmm I don’t think we’ll ever fix the climate rip
Salz Berry hmm what you think about cryonics? Are people really gonna be like they once were?
@Rich Perez We already have flying cars though
Rich Perez In order to have flying cars we need hydroelectric pads that interacts with the electricity in the air by picking up the around the car
This is so inspiring!
Our world is advancing so quick, wonder what it's going to look like in 50 yrs.
We will be dead and gone in 50 years at this rate. The carbon content in our atmosphere is burning us up.
@@humanwithaplaylist that or war
Come guys don’t be so harsh on the future, we some times need to make the best for this generation and the next generations from on out
Shit Detroit become human could very well become real😳
Interstellar travel that the alien races have prohibited to share with us since the 1970s
This is some great content. More of this!
Tears of hope..
I feel happy to see this
AMAZING!!!
THIS SHOULD BE TRENDING ALL OVER THE WORLD!!!
One of Vice's best reporters. Excellent piece.
Truly inspiring
This is what countries should spend money on .
To the peaceful innovations and for betterment of humankind .
Instead of wars
Unfortunately, we do not live in a ideal world for this to happen
1. Humans are flawed (malicious/anger driven people makes their way to position of power far easier than people with good intentions)
2. Driven by money/self-interest
3. Wars determine the state of the world/society that you live in
You might be saying this as a rhectoric message but it is not simple to say we should not have wars or on why nations choose to spend their money on 'defense' rather than for peace.
People with malicious intent (in every generation) will always try to take advantage and control whenever they can. Hence countries with increasing military power and even war is necessary to show strength for deterrence.
@@bobbyhill5067 what you said is right.
As long as we humans don't have a common enemy it is difficult for them to spent the money on the people.
I love this so much.
Thanks for very positive and useful video.. God bless this clever people...
Amazing!
I love this, as well as the fact that this could benefit those with tremors!!
Just a few more years and it'll be perfected

Wow! I'm blessed to be alive in this day & age!
Amazing video 👍
this is amazing
Amazing video.
Glad that bionics is helping people with disabilities. Independent is so important to everyone and to give that to them again is a wonderful thing.
this is so amazing
Honestly I’m blown away, I didn’t know this was possible. This is incredible.
this is unbelievable. wow.
Yes, finally I am on the right side of the CZcams again where most of the inspirational things happening and gives you hope for the future when you are tired of unfairness, injustice and selfishness around the world.
Good stuff
Wow! Just WOW!
Things are getting nuts!!
Why aren't more billionaires getting together to do more research in all this tech and even stem cell therapy? What is the point of having the money if you don't do anything good with it.
Musk is trying.
Amazing 👍
God, this is freaking amazing
Now that is amazing
Bionic combat sports are going to be brutal, can't wait
Wow-So cool!
What was not mentioned was Battelle's involvement in regards to Dr. Rizai's work with human computer interface.
This is amazing. The world is getting closer and closer everyday 🙏
I've been tearing up this whole video. For hundreds of years people with handicaps have been shunned, looked at and treated differently. Soon most cases of inability will be gone thanks to the people who never gave up or sold themselves short after their accidents.
So cooooool! 👏👏👏👏👏
To be honest I was shocked!
This video shows me the new era! And it's just beginning!)
That is awesome.
Super the front side of a science!
This is great.
This is absolutely amazing! Sad how the last guy broke his neck, and was paralyzed all because of diving into a wave. Insane!
videos like this remind me what a remarkable time we live in. All the doom and gloom in this world dont compare to this new age of technology to help us evolve
The technology for the hope and the improvement of people life. Not for war!
Great scientists and their teams God bless them!
