Very informative. If possible -- could you guys do some content specifically about which mobile antennas are ground dependent vs ground independent? The reason why I ask is that I have a roof rack mobile antenna setup similar to the one that was shown towards the end of your vid. When I was initially trying to set up my configuration -- I ran into a lot of problems in terms of antenna choices because of lack of manufacturer specification information regarding whether or not a antenna was ground dependent or not. Thanks and 73s.

    Speed tested in Germany:
Sirio mag mount with a Nagoya 2m/70cm, and
Generic mag mount with 11m centre loaded antenna
100mph verified no issues. Even in the UK the same set up 80mph middle of the roof doesn't move anywhere.

Now Do HF - be interesting to see you approach, having used G Whips 80/10 and Hustlers (Hustler base mounts for HF where great). Mounted on plate on a roof Rack through to bumper mounts with the Hustler. Started out in 1974 as DA2WN/m. Now of course one can use the towing eye if you know how to use - it long with bonded earth as the car body is the RF ground plane on HF .
I stay away from Mag mount, given time they collect particles that leave marks on the paint work of the cars roof.
Yes deriving back from Ally Pally RSGB rally 1978 or 79 up the M1 - Mag Mount 7/8th whip - doing ish 70 - thump lost the mag mount - luckily it went of side ways on to the hard shoulder side (remember hard shoulders did exist once upon a time) and whip and base parted company. Stopped at next services just a piece of Coax,. No I did not go back and look for it, saw in the rear view mirror it rolled of onto the hard shoulder into the grass verge. Never used a mag mount since - used rail mount or cross bar between rails with VHF whip in the middle.

You would need a good mount for that double 5/8s. Diamond K40 heavy duty mount or a tri magmount. I have the Diamond SG-7900 and that’s big on the car and needs to be used with those mounts due to its weight.

I have the CR8900, it makes a nice stealthy quad band loft antenna with the addition of a few radials to make up for the lack of vehicle for its counterpoise. I will give this video a share on my Bluesky feed.

I had a huge 10m/6m mobile antenna for use with my FT-8900, but sadly it is no more. I'd love to get another one.

Thanks for that. Could you also do an overview of mic and PTT options for mobile - what the law is regarding handheld mics and what the options are for wired headsets, bluetooth etc. That would be really useful as there can be a lot of confusion in this area. I use my FT5 handheld for mobile and my ideal is a custom cradle for the rig, a headset mic, a separate external speaker and a latching PTT switch in a handy location. I had to put that together myself though as there doesn't seem to be a product that provides exactly that. Thanks and 73 Alan G4FZP
