The more I watch your stuff, the more I actually understand why farmers do the things they do.
Two things.... Seeing new piglets, what a great sight to see in a weary world. Then, that baler! I may never deal with hay in my lifetime, but to think of what it took for someone to figure out how to make a single machine that does all that! Truly awe-inspiring :) And, for you to learn it!
I liked how you explained the nuances of your baler, how it sounds, why you pause to wrap the twine and how you shut off the baler to dump the bale. Any new person, or people that haven't ran one, may not understand those terms, but those of us that have, or do, understand it perfectly. Great video, thanks Pete! Have a wonderful day.

I bought a used NH 273 small sq. baler yesterday. Had grown up on KS farm with new and then used IH 46 baler..often had difficulty with the knotter. I like the overhand knot NH currently uses. Seems to tie and hold most of the time. I also prefer feeding small squares rather than big rounds to my small herd with my equipment. Keep sending your small farm demos. You do a nice job with them.

My goodness, you did have a busy day. Tending to Reds new litter of piglets, which are absolutely adorable! They always seem to have beautiful color markings. Then you have the first calf of the season, which is cute as well. Not to mention tending the fields and bailing hay. Thanks for sharing video of the new arrivals on the farm. I'm anxious to see the next video and see if you have any more new arrivals on the farm! Hope you and the family have a great day! 🙂
Pete, congratulations on the beautiful piglets - your animals are lucky to have such a kind and compassionate person caring for them. I love seeing you relaxed and smiling when things are going smoothly - much better than when you were dealing with the tractor that sucked a valve.
Good job Pete and Hilary! Nice weather for hay, I had the 674 out cutting this morning bit of rain moving in but tomorrow looks nice. Looks really dry there. Very humid here in Ontario today. Nice to have the canopy for the 656 on days like this. Take care guys and good haying! Had some coyotes near my heard this morning after I found a heifer calf born in the night she was on the wrong side of the fence, close call …yikes. Anyway calf and mom are doing great.

I don't comment often on videos, but I wanted to share my experience with the bottle fly traps - I love them and have been using them for years... I found that if you empty them all at the same time, it seems like it takes a while for the flies to find the traps again. When you have more than one bottle together, stagger when you empty them. Always have a bottle with flies already trapped in the bunch. I think that the buzzing of flies trapped inside (and probably the smell) attract more to the area and then the newly emptied bottles fill faster. And keep water in the bottles - if they start getting low, add more water. Billions of flies have met their demise in my bottle fly traps over the years and my animals are much happier for it! I love your videos - I haven't missed one in years... and don't stop the Dad jokes :)
Always love when the babies start dropping and with the pigs always fun to see the colors and size. And then watching them play and their personalities develop. I always enjoy your humor and have a good laugh and bit of a groan with your jokes and the look on your face as you deliver the punch line. You two are always so cute together and so nice to see that. Take care and until the next video keep hydrated and don't get to hot with this soon to be summer weather.
Another thing I would like to add to my other comment is my dad has an old H older than me he puts his heart in fixing it the best he can do I can drive it every day 😢😭❤️

It’s so educational and entertaining watching you, working the field with this equipment that was used for decades.
It’s not as high tech as today’s equipment, but the craftsmanship and knowledge that went into engineering, building, and operating this machinery, is special.
This was all done before there were computers and electronics, so there were many very smart and mechanically inclined people with a lot of fore sight years ago to be able to build this equipment!
I was raised in the 50’s in a very small town in a rural area, I never lived on a farm, but it’s so enjoyable watching this, and the scenery is truly awesome!
Beautiful piggies Pete. Red is a good mom. She tries to get those babies out of the way, but you are correct...it's hard to keep track of that many when they are all wiggling around and you are that big of a sow just trying to get some rest.. Such a great temperament on those moms. You can always tell by the way animals act around their owners those that get that good attention and those that don't. Your animals all get that personal attention that keeps them happy and content and feeling safe and it shows! Your fly experiment might be catching different types of flies at different times in their life cycle. Yellow jackets like protein in the spring and summer and can be trapped using old lunch meat in a catch jar, but in the hot summer and fall they wan sugar which is why in august you find them hanging out around pop cans, fallen fruit, and trash cans that have sweet drinks in them. I wonder if flies do sort of the same thing. Just a though.
I just purchased a 1066 to make hay with. If it won't be making rounds, it will be making small squares with an accumulater. Big upgrade from the previous 45 horse tractor being the biggest I use. Old IH just never dies.
It's a miracle that never gets old!

Love the piggies! Round balers have made the farmer’s life so much more manageable. I spent many an afternoon helping my neighbors put up square bales and some of my own. It’s nothing but work squared.
Just getting those square bales in my barn was a couple of days work plus handling it again in feeding. Yes, a wonderful invention! Regards your jokes Pete, the pun is the last stronghold of the totally unprincipled! 🤣🤣🤣. Keep’em coming!!!!!!
I had to laugh at " work squared"'!!!! You sure are correct about that, cause my memory recollects one improperly "tied" bale In the bale chamber had two or even 3 more incorrectly tied bales which took a long long time to tie manually .... 😢😢😢while tractor operator gets accused of sleeping hahaha...been there and not even forgotten ....Dennis

I always love the smell of fresh Hay, and I enjoyed you filming while you were cutting and bailing!! It brought back a lot of memories. We did not have a round Baylor but instead we had a regular rectangular hey Baylor and we walked alongside the wagon and as the bales would come up, And Us children took turns pick up & throwing them UP on the Wagon; Partway through the field, the ones on the wagon had to get down and switch w/ the ones walking & tossing bales up to the wagon…Dad was very fair about that… Freezer job was easy as when you were on the wagon and you had to work quick to get it stacked nice and tight so that you could stack the wagon full and high so not too many runs went back to the barn and in my case I was usually the one picking up the bales and bringing it to the other person on the wagon, as I was the runt of the family (Having been a twin and my twin died at birth & I was always challenged w/ health issues tIl I was over 21).
I really love seeing the baby Pigs also❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️ It always amazes me how the Sow could be one color & her piglets could be a bunch of different colors. I was an adult before I got that one figured out and yours are just some of the cutest little pigs I’ve seen in a long time. I’m sorry you lost a few and like you said, you can take all the precautions you possibly can for the babies safety, and mama will still manage to lay on some or have one or two still bursts. Those sows just get SO BIG & once they are headed downward, everything had better be out of her way!!!!

I’ve been watching your channel for a good little spell now and I look forward to each visit. I grew up on a dairy farm and we also grew cotton. We didn’t grow hay but we had good pasture. I loved the life but only understood later on how lucky I was. I am an only child and I could choose what kind of work to do. I fed calves, did some irrigating, did some milking and trailed along after my dad a lot. My work often turned into play but that’s probably why my memories are so treasured. Unlike many of my friends whose parents treated them like hired help but without the pay, unless you count room and board. Anyway, I can almost smell the familiar smells from the farm. I never thought it was a bad smell, it was pleasant really. Thanks for helping me to vividly remember days gone by. 😁
Pete you are so correct about stressful. Keeping an eye on the baler, listening for that different unusual sounds ETC. Viewing your channel is fun and educational.

Our sow just farrowed 4 days ago. She also had 13, one was stillborn, so 12 live. Thankfully we still have 12.

Angela here at the goat ranch. Summers out where's the kids? I had pigs once upon a time and 2 sows dropped 13 piglets each in a out of season ice storm . I'd like to try it again after seeing the baby's. Your ruining me. We have baby kids running all over the place. What a great start to a beautiful year. God bless you guys. Back in the 60's I helped Grandpa bale hay. He had a sickle bar mower and a converted horse pulled rake. If the hay wasn't drying well, he'd rake the rows a second time (no tedding back then). I drove the H tractor and he stacked the bales on the wagon coming off the IH baler. LOTS of square bales to feed his angus cattle. It was hot and dusty work back then and I treasure those memories all these years later. Thanks for sharing your days.
Yes, raking is more of a zen experience than cutting or baling.
Nothing cuter than baby pigs!! Farm life has always appealed to me. But, now I’m too old to do it! I sure love watching farming and gardening. It feeds my soul. ♥️🙏🏼♥️
Ive seen lots of drones integrated into you tube channels, but yours has benefitted the most by it I feel...so awesome to see the wide shots of the field as you bail...give such a great perspective...really love it!
So much joy in new life on the farm. good to see H again looking good as ever. If I remember right that was 2020/2021 restoration project. Good old videos that was! As good as now. Always so much good information I always tell people.
Sad we didn't get to see any mowing. Those H farmalls are great tractors, it was always my favorite as well. I always think it's funny to see people pull a rake with 100hp tractor when they could be using an H or an 8N haha

Watching the hay baler at work was so interesting. We retirees from NY really miss the beauty of upstate NY. We reminisce each time we watch. Thank you both.
The piglets are just soo cute. I guess I'm just a pig farmer at heart. It's been a few years since we had sows. I miss the excitement of the anticipation of birth, but also the stress. It was hard since we farrowed on dirt. To me your set up is perfect for keeping a small herd. That's just my opinion. Also the hay you put up looks terrific. HAPPY FATHER'S DAY.

I had a sow that did the exact same thing she had 12 piglets and laid on Three of them right in the middle of the pen. I still believe she did it on purpose because she couldn’t take care of 12 piglets.
It's nice to see some new family members and they look like they are adapting well. It's nice to see the hay and how the tedding, raking, and the baling to see that you had the cooperation with the weather worked so well.Great video, too bad the smell of that fresh hay did not come through, although the memory of years past came back.
Hi Pete I am a full time pig farmer.
Everytime i have mama pig gave birth..I watch them overnight for the the period of 4 days..to avoid casualty.its a lot of work yes..but worth it to save all piglets.

grew up on a dairy farm in Wis...often in late Winter we'd come down from our bedrooms upstairs and find a runt pig in a bushel basket in the kitchen next to the radiator with dad's big jacket over it...life on the farm...incredible memories.

Good looking hay, Pete. I could, and often did, run a rake all day long, it is calming, but I had to take frequent stretch breaks because my old 2 cylinder John Deere would beat you up! LOL Just a quick 90 second stroll to check the windrows and get a drink of water, then back at it. Great memories!

That is a super sized sow. The piglets are not tiny things either. My grandmother had a big sow like her, except she was entirely red, no spots. When she was finally slaughtered, she dressed out over 600 pounds of meat. Her largest litter was 19 piglets, all survived.

Congrats on the hay. I live in Belle Fourche, SD. Last Sunday, we got hammered by a hailstorm. Up to softball size two miles from us. We had up to baseball size. My hayfield was 1 week from cutting and baling. It was just shy of 3’ tall and is now under 1’. So, I hope the weather is kind and I get a crop in July. The pasture is beaten down too, as is the oat field. I’m hopeful that the seedlings were established enough that they will grit and the alfalfa, grass mix and pasture mix come back with vigor.
