You nailed it on what Netflix has done with this series and I agree, Henry Cavill is the only redeeming quality they had, at least he understood what the Witcher world represents.

I understand Cavill wanting to do his best but the portrayal was nothing like Geralt in the books, it’s like the writers had 1 guy that played the Witcher 3 and read the glossary to get the backstory then ran with it.

I think the key to why these directors make terrible adaptations is that they genuinely still don't respect our tastes. They think "Well for some reason this is popular, so we'll fix it and make it better." Then when they ruin it they shrug and go "you're bad fans." Its stupid and I miss obscurity.

I remember first playing the Witcher 3 in the Summer/autumn of 2019. It was a magical experience. I remember finishing the base game and starting the Hearts of Stone dlc one week before the Netflix series dropped. I was so excited. When I ended up watching the Netflix series I was so disappointed. I had immersed myself in the games and read the first three books by that point and it was so frustrating to see such a great fantasy world so poorly adapted for the screen. It took me a long time before I could even stomach to interact with the Witcher fan base again. Still I’m at least happy now that the world can see the Netflix series for what it is. An assassination of the Witcher IP.

I saw season 2 and wanted to cry, never felt like that before. My blood was boiling cause I knew that hey had one chance and they wasted it , and who knows if any other producers will take over the rights in the future, many years will need to past and somebody that really loves the franchise should step in. I will no force myself watching season 3. Not even for henry, not giving them my views nor my time. Maybe henry can buy the rights in the future.

I tried watching the 3rd season and found my 1st problem within 5 min. The 1st fight with Geralt was done so terribly. They actually used a cheesy, slow-motion spinning camera effect while Geralt was killing a guy 🙄. Afterwards, the story was so bad that I found myself fast forwarding again and again until I just gave up. I don't even wanna read the books anymore 😕. I'll just wait for the next game 🙃.

Pure arrogance is to blame. The writers at Netflix really believed they could do it better than Sapkowski. When it backfired they had to blame someone, and that someone was unfortunately Henry Cavill and the fans. Henry was honestly way too good for this show. Despite Season 1’s problems I still thoroughly enjoyed it, it’s just a shame they completely dropped the ball with Season 2.

I didn’t used to like Cavill but I have so much respect for him now for standing up to what he, as a fan and an actor, believes is the right thing for the source material and the fans of the franchise and walking away risking his career and giving up the money he would’ve made. Respect Henry 👏🏻

  • @nevaratoiel.

I liked season 1 and it was Henry's enthusiasm that got me to buy the whole series of books and read them in one go. I was very excited for season 2. And then it happened... and man I was so disappointed. And that turned into frustration and even a bit of anger.
And now season 3, I watched the first 5 episodes for Henry alone and he is still the only bright spot. They literally adapted dialogue and scenes from the books but without the depth. They dont have the knowledge or understanding to write their own intrigue. Alk they had to do was read the books and rewrite them for screenplay. They don't care about the Witcher franchise or the fans. They only care about diversity and representation and putting their mark on it for future references.
This couldve been great. Henry proved to an almost perfect Geralt. I really hope Netflix will just end it now.

I'm relieved to be able to say that I gave up after season 2 episode 5.
I'm grateful that I had the strength to look away.
I'm saddened by the world i live in.
I'm disheartened by the fact that I gave up on The Wheel of Time as well after 7 episodes.
I was thankful that i didn't stoop so low that I watched The Rings of Power.
But most of all i remind myself frequently of the joy that the books have brought me and that the Witcher games are works of art.
We may as well celebrate good things in life rather than dwell on the poison on our tv screens.

I actually liked WoT and am a long time fan of the books having read my first one back in 1991 shortly after The Great Hunt was published. I get that quite a bit was changed but I also understand that a faithful adaptation of this gargantuan series is only possible by condensing and omitting a lot of material. I feel like they kept enough of the essential elements to be identifiable as WoT.
I'm a person of color and like to see diversity but only when it makes sense. I feel like the diversity in WoT felt forced and was more concerned with making a statement in service to our current culture wars rather than doing the books justice. Would love to see some of Rings of Power's budget allocated to WoT because unlike RoP, WoT is drawing from an actual narrative.

@phrozac They made Rand a lovesick puppy. They gave and killed Perrin's wife. They made Mat a common thief. They made the story about the women. They gave us stuff about Steppin that wasn't needed. They made resurrection almost a thing. There was delineation between Saidin or Saidar. No explanation as to why male channellers go mad. Judkins is merely making a feminist remake of an already matriarchal world. In my opinion a worse version.

My introduction to the Witcher universe, like many, was via the Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt. I loved it, but wasn't motivated to read the books as I disliked most literary fantasy, especially "high" fantasy with its regurgitative settings featuring elves, dwarves, swords, and magic. What appealed to me most about the Witcher was the monster aspect of it, and how it weaved traditional folklore and mythology into that setting.
Fast forward a few years and Season 1 of the show finally comes out. I enjoyed it but felt a bit lost. By the time Season 2 comes out and the book fandom begins to rail against it, I finally picked up the books and devoured all of them in the span of a few weeks to figure out the source of all their moaning. I cannot believe how anyone could have genuinely read those books and then had a part in the creation of the Netflix Witcher show for they truly have nothing in common besides nomenclature.
The most egregious offense of the Netflix show is the liberty it took with casting, especially that of the sorceresses but also the elves, dryads, and Nilfgaardians. Triss, Keira, Philippa, especially Fringilla but even Sabrina do not share an iota of commonality with their literary counterparts. Emhyr is supposed to look shrewd and have an angled face, not youthful with a beard. Eithné is described by her silver hair in every scene she's in. Elves are tall, thin, and fair-skinned. Their shared physiognomy defines their race, distinguishes it from ours, and is a central point of conflict in the books. In the show they're just humans with pointy ears. 90% of the Continent is in the Northern Hemisphere and cold with winters bearing snow, meaning people with a dark complexion like the Zerrikanians accompanying Borch Three Jackdaws are truly a rarity in this universe.
The Netflix Witcher show is not an adaptation at all, and its failure has poisoned the chalice of live-action Witcher projects for at least a decade.

I'm going to stop after season 3 since henry cavill was the only reason I was watching it. His performance as Geralt got me to replay wild hunt with a mod that put his version of Geralt in the game. I didn't like the changes to the source material & calling him toxic for wanting to stick to the source material.

  • @darkvortex2410
    @darkvortex2410 Před rokem +1

I kinda hate to say it but Netflix's The Witcher was my introduction to this universe. Beforehand I knew of The Witcher but it never really intrested me at the time, ironic because I am big into fantasy. I saw it on Netflix and watched a little snippet of it, through it looked interesting. I was like, "i like a good series and Henry Cavill is a great actor". Watched season one, even though it had some issues I enjoyed it.
After that I read the book's, watch a retrospective on the first 2 games, and play The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. I literally said out loud "this world is AMAZING". Got excited for season two but didn't set my expectations to high and I'm glad I did. First episode was alright at best but everything after was a dumpster fire. I couldn't even finish the season, FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE THAT I HAVE EVER DONE THAT.
Even though he was the best part about the show, I'm glad Henry Cavill left. That man has for to much love, respect, and integrity for The Witcher that he didn't want to be a part of Netflix's version.
Their are only a FEW things I ACTUALLY like from Netflix's The Witcher.
    • Henry Cavill giving a million percent
    • The two songs by Jaskier, "Toss a Coin to your Witcher" and "Burn Butcher Burn"
    • Geralt vs The Striga
    • Joey Batey as Jaskier/Dandelion
I personally wish all the actors and crew the best because they are doing the best they can with what is given to them. I wish for the Showrunner and all the writers to be fired and to never work on any show that has a fandom attached.
I would love to see Netflix sell the rights to someone else like MAX. Yes Game of Thrones final season was crap but they would still do better than Netflix. They have experience with fantasy, they would have the money to pull something like this off, and could do great casting. Only IF they had people who gave a damn about it. HBO'S The Last of Us is a great example: they told the same story, made changes that fit the media it's being told, added new elements that still fit in with the world. As much as I love Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia and Joey Batey as Jaskier. They NEED to get all new cast, preferably unknowns or lesser known actors. That way we see the CHARACTERS.
I guess in a weird way i can thank Netflix for introducing me to The Witcher. Sorry for the long comment.

Top 2 reasons - 1. Director blatantly not following the books/source materal and going with whatever "modern" trendy thing payed them the most. Number 2 (controversial but i don't care) rage casting - casting obviously geographically incorrect cast to appease to a small vocal audience. i.e. fringilla vigo by a Carribean woman and asian elves.

The Expanse is a good example when showrunners change some parts of the books, but keep faithful to the spirit of the original. If I was to get cynical, I would say that 'Muricans should never be creatively involved in the Witcher, because it results it results in a show/product like this. But in case of what Netflix is doing, I can say exactly that, because just look at this. We have "creative" team that doesn't understand nor respect the source material, and is interested in pushing their own message and excuse of a stories forward. This is, their hubris and blatant lies aside, the creators don't really know anything about anything that is outside of their bubble they live in. The rest of the world is not California and so not every project needs to conformt to what small percentage of 'murican populaton wants.

Witcher 3 is my favourite game and the books are my favourite book series, I really, really love the Witcher. The show is a horrible adaptation, no doubt about it and the showrunner is simply a liar looking for a paycheck. BUT while i despise bad adaptaions such as the Last Airbender movie, the Witcher Netflix does keep bringing me back. I do agree it can hardly be considered Witcher anymore but I do still find myself interested in the story and the characters and whats happening next.
Throughout the games, books, comics, movies, and the two shows, there has never been anything in the Witcher I don't like.
I definitely preferred it when it first started, it has dropped in quality massively. My ideal plan would be to end the show, have Henry be a showrunner or lead writer or something for an animated adaptation with the cast of the Witcher 3 back in their roles. Honestly adapt the books word for word with the Witcher 3 cast and a decent animation style and i'm happy

What went wrong is that the show was never very good in the first place. It fails right from the start in telling a story as good as what can be found in the books or games. It was successful based entirely off the charisma of its leads. It didn't always suck but the structure of se1 was unnecessarily confusing and focused too much on building political intrigue when it would've been better off giving us cool Witcher monster hunting. Start off small and work up to the world events after we're all vested into these characters. My take anyway. I got a bit past halfway through se2 and just lost interest.

I've not read the books, only played Witcher 3 (and the DLCs), but you don't have to be familiar with it to see that the Netflix adaptation is terribly boring storytelling. It seems to happen with a lot of book adaptations, they just make something super generic with the character names and it loses the reason it became popular in its original form in the first place.

It doesn't even have to be faithful (that is it doesn't have to be a 1:1 reproduction). Just have good, logical writing, plots, and characters. The Witcher show feels like the last 2 seasons of GOT. Rushed, garbage writing, garbage plot. Like just give us characters that act, think, and make decisions as the book and game characters would. Or even just characters that do logical things at all. Netflix Yennifer went from "f*ck this Ciri girl" to "omg I'll sacrifice myself for Ciri" in like 6 minutes? That's not how real people work. At least give us a rationale for this change of heart, it could be a whole episode or more. Nah. 5 minutes with no thoughtful dialog is good.

So, yeah, I'm a fan. I'd say The Witcher universe is my favorite fantasy world. I know LorR and D&D people would stone me, but it is what it is. Anyway, that all being said I loved Season 1. It deviated from the books, but in a way I felt was ok. "Basing" something off the books and "adapting" it are fine after all. I'm a comic book reader and realize that any animation or live action adaptation are going to make some changes.
When Season 2 came around and I watched Episode 1, I was so excited. They did a really great job with that episode. In the books Ciri isn't there and so of course they needed to change things, but again, I thought it was well done.
Then the rest of Season 2 happened. Wow. The change to Yennifer and all of that really messed things up. Cavil as Geralt was still awesome though.
The animated movie with Vessimer was ok.. I didn't think it was needed though.
Blood Origin.. oh my god.. what a bunch of horse shit. That was like the worst fan fiction ever and I'd like to forget that crap ever happened. Making Avalach gay was so unnecessary and just cringy. Making the Lark, a black chick, Ciri's ancestor is just stupid and laughable. Oh and making the Elves just humans with pointy ears.. such crap. The "first witcher".. what?? They totally retconnedt he books there and again, why? Blood Origin should be removed from Netflix and never thought of again.
Season 3... I mean, honestly it is better than Season 2. They are doing things that are similar to the books but the problem is they are bastardizing them a lot. The "Dear friend" letters and Yen calling Ciri "my ugly one" come to mind. They worked how they were done in the books, but not on the show. I know a lot of people disliked the 5 episode, but I liked it. It was similar to the books.. I mean, the way it was done in the show was weird with the editing, but other than that I liked it.
BUT making Jaskier bi was unnecessary. Things like that divide the audience and that isn't a good thing. He was a womanizer in the books and NEVER in season 1 or 2 are we every shown that he swings that way. Radovid as the gay brother of the king instead of his son... weird and unnecessary.
Mistle, Kiera and Margarita all made into less than attractive plus sized woman is also a change that they shouldn't have made. In the books Ciri sees Rita's naked body and thinks she is the hottest woman she has every seen... the way she is portrayed in the show though.. ugh.
To fix the show I just wish they would stop making "woke" changes and just leave the story as is. Go back to being a bit more grittier... like in Season 1. Make more sense.. hey remember in season 1 how Ciri would dress up like a commoner boy to disguise herself?? Um... why can't she do that in Season 3? Don't have Geralt run through the portal to break Rience's hands instead of kill him I mean he could have snapped his neck then and there, but he goes back to just say he needs to track him down to finish him of... um.. ok. So yeah.. get better writers.
With Cavill leaving the show will suffer a lot though and I'm unsure it will be watchable or not.
If they cancel it though it will likely be a LONG time before its done in a show again though. :(

I got into the Witcher world in season 1, played TW1, read all the books, then they revealed emhyr just before I had finished last book (got pissed off). S2 was a complete mess, however, I still like season 1 because it still tries to tie together things before BoE which they didn't care about

"Ah, the famous Hissrich, the butcher of Witcher." May she forever stub her toes.
The show is a tragedy. *Everything* from the entire casting, the screenwriting, the editing, and the godawful scripts are a cesspit of grief. They don't care for nor respect the source material, and it shows.
As for the horde defending Cavil, may I just say, he only played the third game, yet hadn't finished it, and had only read The Last Wish prior to his casting on the show. He said as much in several interviews, thus making him *not* a "source of endless Witcher knowledge" which has been claimed by several fans and by Hissrich herself. Granted, by whom in comparison he would be, as she *clearly* has no idea what the books nor the games are about, nor has the interest to find out.
Though I share the same opinion of Cavil being the *only* good thing about the show, he's *far* down the list of actors I would've chosen to fit the role. But I do like his enthusiasm. But Cavil is the sole reason for the Tv Geralt primarily communicating with grunts instead of words, like he does in the books, as Cavil's idea of Geralt is a "silent brooding type" instead of the intelligent, wise, and highly opinionated person Geralt actually is in the books.
And now, I rest my case.

My husband, who has not read the books and seen the game plays( I live your takes on it) has tried to watch it but it has got more and more confusing for him and I think he has also given up. I too liked the first series but had not then read the books etc. sorry Henry but I can watch no more. Now listening to the audio books to comfort myself.

Before season 1 come out I was expecting it would be as bad as it is now, so I was pleasantly surprised. I think it was full of flaws but a promising start of Witcher novels adaptation. But cynic in me knew show will just go downhill and it happened as I expected. I don't know what personal changes beside composer happened after season 1 but show went downhill in every aspect imaginable when it comes to production and its keep going down in season 3. Just basic level stuff is appallingly bad, these people don't know how to write same as people writing The Rings of Power. I also hope it never goes beyond this season and it might happen. Season 3 has no buzz unlike good reception of season 1 that actually created a big buzz and expectation before season 2. Now nobody is talking or watching it. Even if it does not get cancelled Netflix will lose money for making seasons 4 and 5 and that's fine with me. I'm not interested in continuing after season 3 because Henry was the only good thing left in the show.

I have never liked the show but back in season 1 but I also didn't hate it. After season 2, I have actively started to dislike the show but I have always had this pragmatic approach to it.
Somebody might watch the show and decide to read the books. After watching the show and reading the books, they might decide to buy and play the games. When they buy and play the games, that means more money for CDPR. More money for CDPR should in theory make the next game in the installment better and even grander in scope. It's probably naive on so many levels but that used to be my thinking anyway. Now I just want the show to end, I want it to be forgotten and never talked about again.

The show was such a disappointment for me. I was absolutely excited about anything Witcher related and to have a show adaptation of the source material seemed amazing. Then I saw how they introduced Dandelion and I was very sad. By the end of season 1, I realised they didn't understand the core themes of the books and they would push it in a direction that I couldn't quite make out. Then halfway through season 2, episode 1 I started laughing out loud because that's when I realised what I'm watching is a poorly written fan fiction.

I thought S1 was alright. S2 made me want to break shit. Some changes I appreciated, like letting the bard's name be Jaskier. I was honestly annoyed at the English interpretation of Jaskier being Dandelion, when it actually means Buttercup. Just let the poet keep his name, instead of creating an entirely different translation for it. Yes, I know that's a small rant, but it's my rant. S2 was really, literally, just a well-funded but questionably written fanfic. Though I agree with you, I'm not sure those in charge were fans. Now the first half of S3 is out, and I'm actually hearing good things about it. After the second half drops, if the fans I know are still giving good reports, I may watch S3. We'll see. Sometimes I'm a glutton for punishment. I agree, they could have stood to have a little more game in them either way.

BIGGEST MISTAKE was hiring a writer who didn't know or at least respect the source material. I talked briefly with Lauren Schmidt Hissrich on twitter and she seems like a nice person but it was so obvious she had zero interest in trying to stick to the books. I think it was doomed to fail because of that. Strayed from the books, tried to make it a cookie cutter generic fantasy. I personally hate the "anti-sjw" types you find on the internet but even for me the diversity casting seemed really on the nose. I think everyone being represented is cool but I don't think The Witcher was the right choice for what they were trying to do.

Same bs is happening to that legend of a game character. Im bloody sick of it.
