Knowing that Arlo's parents were divorced and remarried to others, I think Arlo's mom was an amazing woman to make certain the children knew their dad. What a forward thinking woman. What lucky children she had.

I have Huntington's and I really appreciate these interviews.
I was backstage in the Green Room at the Heritage Coffeehouse in San Diego, CA with a bunch of other musicians, when word came to us that Woody had just died. It was devastating news that I will never forget.....that was Oct 3, 1967. I had just graduated from high school. Four years later i would be hanging out with Arlo at Lena's in Saratoga Springs, living at Wildflower Headquarters with Utah Phillips and Billy Vanaver. Crazy, Wonderful world back then, when everything was possible. I was so privileged to be young and living as a musician in those days! I'm 7 months older than Nora and 2 yrs younger than Arlo. I remember being so relieved as time went by that Arlo didn't get the HC gene... phew!

I found out while building my
husband's family tree we are related to three generations ofLong Island Doctors. My husband's mother's maiden name was Huntington! We are related to the Three generations of Drs to which the syndrome is named. They were horse & biggie Drs who traveled Long Island treating their patients.
I knew Utah too quite well in Nevada City & via his Railroad library train car in Black Butte, Weed California! I too graduated high school in 1967 and to know Arlo & Woody via my other mentor/friend famed folkloist Stetson Kennedy, the circle is unbroken.
Thanks for creating this valuable oral history! CZcams sure is a treasure. It's beautiful seeing Arlo. I enjoyed listening to the interview with his sister Nora as well.
So good to see Arlo looking so good. Howard Beach! Who knew? I grew up in Woodhaven and went to Woodstock to hear Arlo.

So sad that Woody was not well diagnosed...the old days of mental health were awful. Woody should not have been in Greystone...now we know. However...for as awful as Greystone was for many...it was actually good for some and like an isolated protected community. When I was there for internship...many "patients" were content and had jobs and activities. It was a beautiful complex unless you went deep inside ! The smell yes Arlo...it covered up the problems. Deep inside there were terrible wards. You would never have experienced the real routine as a visitor. Your father was found and admitted. No one really knew But actually the life in Greysone could have been "secure" and actually comfortable so long as you were not a "problem" or acting out. Respect to your Mother for having kept you in contact with your Father. Huntintgon's is a terrible condition. Glad you had the good times around the "Magicky Tree". Thank you for continuing his legacy and for all your great music !
He was taking off and wandering into dangerous situations. He needed a secure setting.

I seem to think Woody was depressed at Greystone, especially not having Margaret and the kids for song long and having to be jealous of Tony the Auto Mechanic. Losing your ability to play guitar must have been heart breaking and no outlet to let his emotions flow through. Torture

The smell was Lysol in the brown glass bottle. It did have a distinct smell, one you had to get used to. Back in the day doctors recommended women douche with water and the Lysol in the brown bottle. I remember my mom doing that, never hurt her.

So weird that Arlo is speaking as a real persona but Stephanie is not live like he is; she just has a still shot of herself from sometime ... who knows when? Why - Arlo's live the interviewer should be too. Just saying; seems strange.
They explained it in the credits in the beginning. It was a glitch with Zoom and they had to improvise. It’s a little distracting. I think there was a lag in the audio too so she talked over him quite a bit. Still fascinating.
I would go into Shriners Hospital for weeks at a time. The smell was anticeptic. I still can't stand it. I know what he means
He was probably smelling Insulin. (I’m a retired Psychiatric Nurse.)
