- A glimpse of what we could have if there was ever a PC build of SF64. If only we got uncompressed sound effects as well.

Havent really heard anyone mention this before but the subtle character interactions in this one level are amazing. The fact the first thing fox says to falco is to check the g- difusser and falco just brushes him off clearly not checking it. Then a couple minutes into the mission it breaks and he says "theres something wrong with the g- difuser" then when fox saves him he just says "i guess i should be thankful" showing how he still cant admit fox was right and thank him for saving him.
and as a callback to this, if you save Falco and proceed to Meteo, he'll break open a few meteoroids with items inside and say "I guess it's your turn to be thankful."
Honestly I really like how this bites him in the ass HARD. If you don't save him, he instantly gets downed
I just realised this now! Compression really does take away some of the character!
Recently listening to the Japanese audio of this mission, in that version, Falco does check it, but he basically goes “eh, it’ll be fine”. It was in fact not fine.
This is definitely the most quotable game Nintendo has ever produced. I have so many lines burned into my memory it’s not even funny.
I always find myself saying, “Sorry to jet, but I’m in a hurry!” Quite often.
Saying "What the heck?!" with Wolf's intonation is just permanently part of my life now. And I'm sure there are a few others I I use on a regular basis
every single line rings in my ears every day of my life
Hey Einstein, I'm on your side!
@@haleman1704 this is horrible…
Since it's uncompressed, Fox's voice doesn't sound different from Smash Ultimate
Wow, it's almost as if it's the same VA
@@Sunominal My point is that the "Scrappy Doo" Fox always sounded like that this whole time.
He technically came back to voice fox in Smash 4.
@@dannyrivas40 oh my god that is what he was saying XD
He really needed that compression, he sounds like a fuckin nerd
I prefer the uncompressed because it shows off the good voice acting, but in order to utilize them correctly, they need to be edited similar to what the voices sound like in Star Fox 64 3D. I suggest this because those voices aren't severely compressed like the N64, but they still sound like they're being transmitted. That way, you get the best of both worlds.
I personally think Falco sounds a lot better compressed, just because the radio tranmission sort of "effect" makes it sound better, imo.
the dynamic range is too high in the uncompressed audio clips sometimes, as well. i would guess they didn't bother applying much in the way of audio processing to make the uncompressed audio sound good and were instead tuning things to sound good when compressed.
There's already a mod for Star Fox 64 3D that uses the new uncompressed voice lines.
the compression for me makes me think its like a through walkie talkie, the uncompressed va just sounds like theyre talking in a room with acoustic foam everywhere, which sounds uncanny for me.
The voice acting is actually pretty shit though.
I think the compressed voices give a "radio" sound, which fits betters. Still cool though
Yeah, I fly, and there are several times where it’s hard to tell what someone’s saying as a result of the interference
Star Fox lucked out. It's a rare instance on the n64 where voice compression adds to the experience rather than detracts from it
@@clairebun Yeah, but the scene during the end credits definitely needs the uncompressed audio.
To be fair, they didn't do that in Star Fox 64 3D either.
And I think every other Star Fox game past 64.
I play this on my n64 everyday, and even reached ANDROSS!!
It's amazing how much different Falco sounds in the uncompressed files, and Peppy's uncompressed lines sound a lot more like The Soldier from TF2.
That's because they share a voice actor, Rick May I believe
@@Vixen_Rose6404 Yes.
@@Vixen_Rose6404 RIP v_v
RIP Rick May
This is why I was extremely confused when I got cast as Falco for a Star Fox fan game.
RIP Rick May.
I'm sorry, I just love the bouncing left and right on the water. It's just so playful and cute
Hearing "Open the wings." gave me chills. The good kind.
Falco sound so different
Mike West's performance haven't changed a bit since then
Different VA for Falco
*DO A BARREL ROLL*
-Rick May (R.I.P.)
I can't stop crying for 5 seconds after hearing one of his lines.
Also Richard Russel.
Fly free sky king.
They are flying in the skies now
he was a true *soldier*
you were good son, real good, maybe even the best
BEAUTIFUL! I could kiss you for this!
Take the right light, boy. I’ve got the left.
*FALCO:* Katt? ...what are _you_ doing here?
it feels weird since i always imagined the compressed voices as sort of the communication systems communicating causing it to compress
i love how they bounce on the waters at every opportunity
Ive been waiting for someone to do this, so exciting!
Me too
I think you mean:
"I've been waiting for you, uncompressed Star Fox!"
Bro if you played starfox on the 3DS it has all uncompressed Audio you dummy and updated graphics. You guys should know this that you can play the game on 3DS with full uncompressed Audio
@@darcyooh5543 whats a 3ds?
Wow Falco's voice sounds a whole lot different now.
Yes! He sounds… more serious than usual!
2:48 the part ur waiting for
I think hearing the voices uncompressed helps to hear what they are saying more clearly in the game, and without the subtitles I can understand them so perfectly. This is what they should have done for 64 3D instead of re-dubbing all the lines. :)
I couldn’t stand the re-dubs. They sounded forced and underwhelming. In other instances, the actors tried too hard
@@GruppeSechs2004 I thought they couldn't use these lines because the uncompressed audio files were gone?
- Minembo that may have been the case, as well as unable to get a hold of most of the original voice actors. Regardless, I much prefer their ADR instead
Nintendo thought the original recordings were lost. Fortunately someone had a copy of them and recently leaked them onto the internet after all these years.
They had to re dub even if these were uncompressed.
Peppy said in the n64 Ver of Titania, “To barrel roll, press Z or R twice.”
3DS does not have a Z button.
Peppy: Incoming enemy from the rear! Drop altitude!
Fox: *boing* *boing* *boing* *boing*
Peppy: Fox, what are you doing?
Fox has ADHD?
@@Superemie401 Falco: He can sure be a pain in the neck.
Honestly the compressed audio seems more military accurate. You can never get a clear line of communication from them
R.I.P the guy who made Peppy's voice.
😢
Rick May
Also was the soldier in tf2
And in Star Fox 64, he also voiced Andross.
And Andross. Blame COVID for us losing that great man...
He'll be missed. :(
4:17 my thumb gettin PTSD seeing the hyper lasers shoot that fast
And that is why God gave us Turbo Buttons
Its more of a rythm rather than just spamming the button
@@matheusvasiliauskassoares4361 I've tried tapping it at a steady rhythm but always resort back to my normal strategy, aka setting the right half of the controller on my lap, setting my index finger over the A button, and shaking my whole wrist to get my finger spamming A as quickly as possible
It sounds like that game's on the Dreamcast System!
Great way to put it!
This is how it sounded when we were kids lolol
Wow, it's amazing how crystal clear the lines sound. I never realized how severely stripped of quality the game's files really were.
3:55 Ahh, someone wants to play with the bouncy arwing.
Imagine if we got uncompressed textures 😩
So more like the 3DS version then?
@@RikouHogashi No, thats a remake using new textures. The way N64 games were made was they did the textures in full resolution using their SGI workstations and when its time to put them in carts they would either compress or rasterize the textures so it fits. Remember that the biggest cartridge the N64 had in capacity was a mere 64 MB (known as 512 megabit carts) and only a handful of games reached that much (the port of RE2 being the most notable one).
@@mrlionX I think the texture appearance had more to do with the small 4KB texture cache of the N64 than anything. Later games did use precomputed textures (e.g. Perfect Dark) where cart size might help, but this was more of an innovative workaround of the texture cache limitations by the developers than an example of how the hardware was intended to perform. Cart size is largely irrelevant.
Imagine a remake of this game with the textures of Star Fox Zero. That would be awesome.
I'm still waiting on uncompressed sound effects :>
Oh my gosh. When the voices started I didn't dare believe it. I had flashbacks of picking up StarFox64 for 3DS, and the one and only time I played it: hearing the redubbed voices made me fall in the uncanny valley and die. But *this*.... Oh my gosh, it's them, it's the originals, it's the real deal! So clear! 8D Thank you for this beautifulness!
The compression sells the performance. This video actually makes me appreciate that they compressed the lines. This level just sounds likes actors recording their lines in a sound booth, and it takes me out of the game.
The uncompressed audio is a novelty that I'm glad we fans have access to, but the game as they released it is supreme.
I never realized that Star Fox 64 and Ocarina of Time have the same soundfont
Pff, not even unlinking charge shots, what a noob.
JK, nice video and thanks again for remaking the raw OST.
Man, it's been so long I forgot about that tech.
For those curious:
Hold Z and R to disable lock on, and aim NEAR an enemy, not on. That way you get an extra point due to an exploit in the system.
I think Zero had that exploit too, now that I think about it. Was it built off of 64 3D's code?
Someone need to make a rom hack with the Uncompressed audio!
I don't think that's possible without a modified emulator but I could be wrong
Uh, OP said romhack, not "put this on a cartridge"
@@MajorasWrath1 That's correct.
Lwilly Watherzon If they had to compress all that audio, I wonder how much space it takes then?
@@lwillywatherzon4130 not true, that was a financial barrier. without rom banking, the n64 has 240 megabytes of addressable cartridge memory on top of 64 megabytes for 64DD.
This is blowing my mind and giving me some serious goosebumps. I used to play a lot of Star Fox. Likely too much. What exactly is going on here? Were these samples lifted right from Nintendo through the big leak that happened a while back that I keep hearing about?
Yup, all of the uncompressed voice lines were present in the gigaleak. Here's a video showing all of them if you want to have a look!

In honor of Star Fox Lylat Wars Exclip episode 1.
Slippy - “My balls ache, and I need to piss”.
Peppy - “My arse is numb, and I need to get drunk”.
Falco - “My middle finger is up man, and it’s pointing at you, Fox”.
This is really throwing me off. It’s so clean!
I can imagine how expensive the cartridge would be to produce if it had enough storage to fit the game and uncompressed voices
To this day there's no plans for doing the uncompile version of Star Fox 64, wish they did maybe with a retexture along with the uncompressed audio files
This is heckin' amazing! Now, Peppy can tell us to Barrel Roll in crisp, clean audio. Lol
That one level in Zero.
@@TheEmeraldMenOfficial Lol ye.
"Barrel Roll, barrel roll, baaarreell rooolllll!" 🤣
RIP Rick May
@@TheBanishedWind Will miss him a lot
Hearing Star fox 64 gameplay without heavily compresed audio is surreal
Sounds so clear now.
You're doing God's work.
OOOH YESSSSS IT SOUNDS SO CLEAN
2:47 here it is folks, single file
This is awsome!!! :-D
THIS IS A TREASURE ❤
I'm blown away by how much less annoying Slippy sounds like this.
This should've been on the 3ds version.
Nintendo thought the recordings were lost and had them done over.
Awesome!!!
3:59 almost sound as the Soldier
RIP Rick May
This is definitely the Star Fox “sequel” we all want, just a remaster of the classic
God Slippy sounds so much better uncompressed. Like everyone sounds a degree better, but Slippy sounds almost 100 percent better.
And now I want a PC port. Lol
We could show the monkies who's boss in glorious HD!
Or even better a switch port
@@themacintoshnerd Heck yes!😉
With the source code leaked, someone could basically make a PC port if they wanted to ("good luck!"). Tho Nintendo would probably send out their team of lawyers.
@@SatoshiAR Lol
A sad reality for sure. Tho, I cant complain too much as we did get the Mario 64 PC Port. 😆 Its insane how far modding has come these days. Some pretty amazing stuff.
Maybe I'll see if I can do.
It's possible that one of the reasons that you're doing this kind of project is combined along with paying respect to Rick May.
2:47 You’re welcome.
This is absolutely amazing. THANK YOU for this gem!
You should totally do the same for Sound effects and/or music, next!
bless your soul
Omg SO GOOD
If Star Fox 64 was released on CD
I love the uncompressed voices.....makes the scene feel so real though its pixelated, however I dont recall that boss at all when playing SF64
i beg you to do this with the other stages and routes
3:55
Fox: Uh, boys? I’m losing control!
I remember trying to get the bomb AND the laser upgrade at that fork in the path... Mostly I just wrecked my own shields.
You could've gotten 16:9 if you got the gameplay from Dolphin's widescreen hack
And certain N64 emulator plugins
Mupen64-next's core on the switch supports this
@Some characters aren't allowed I'm pretty sure there's a gecko code that accommodates for that but I'm not 100% sure.
There are some things that should never be changed
I love it, what's next?
Modders... Get on this ASAP! 0.0
This is what Nintendo should’ve done for the 3DS version
Falco "I'm FINE."
No one asked, Falco 🙄
Fingers Crossed for a StarFox 64 HD Remake.
This is sincerely making me feel like EVERY SINGLE LINE is like a song we all know. We recognize that it’s exactly what we remember and got used to for years but totally different at the same time. The compression was made by speeding up all clips and then program the game to lengthen them back to their original time. But by doing this, we obviously had serious quality loss. Still, it gave the game its charm I believe. I think that if we use the uncompressed clips, they should at least have an option to add a radio effect. 😉
The voices are so loud and clear! I love it!
God that first line hits like a BRICK
Everything about starfox 64 is NOSTALGIC
Now if only we can get a PC port.
It's so jarring to hear the full quality voices that it sounds like people just doing really good impressions
Falco sounds so Badass
2:47 for those who are interested
Now we can have Star Fux 69 uncompressed.
3:55 - "Ah... someone wants to play!"
Never noticed this, but Falco did not check his G-diffuser system in the intro scene. His wings are not open.
His wings were open the whole time, but indeed something wrong with his G-diffuser.
1:19 I knew I wasn't the only one who did that in the n64!
4:00 "Incoming enemy from the rear! Drop altitude!"
Yeah, that's what SHE said... 👀
*He
159 enemies is a very nice performance btw.
My score is 191, but yeah, i have played starfox for years
THIS FEELS WEIRD MAN!!!
It’s so bizarre to hear it so clearly after all these years
2:47 "Do a barrel roll!"
Is this what we could've gotten if the n64 was a cd console, or even on DD
i'd love to hear bills voice uncompressed.
"My emperor I've failed to you!" Would be great uncompressed
Rick May didn't play Peppy, guys, but he WAS General Pepper, Andross, Leon Kowalski, and a lot of the enemy bosses.
Whats interesting is that even though you 'save' corneria you only fight one bad guy. So if you pick the normal path, you fight the mech otherwise you fight this guy.
So if you just fight the mech, is corneria still in danger? Vice versa?
Wow, how did you get your hands on those voice clips?
2:47 The Google Easter egg.
the real best part of the video was your little wing skips on the water
I assume this is all overlayed audio? Not actually changing the rom? Insane dedication, if so.
They sound so different uncompressed
Now add in orchestrated versions of the music.
Starfox assault did remake some of the 64 songs in full orchestra
@@maximillianlylat1589 I think I might have been referring to that.
Hi-fi! You like doing that silly wing bounce off the water too huh?
Clear sound mod
When will there ever be a download link for an IPS Patch containing the uncompressed voices?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
For the N64 Rom File I just mentioned, please include Full HD and 4K Ultra HD texture packs as well!!!
This sounds so wrong yet so right
This makes it so obvious that a woman voiced Slippy
