- My personal favorite Star Fox title is Star Fox 64. No contest. Why? Well, not only is the gameplay still super fun to play today, the game was also incredibly innovative at the time. It implemented full voice acting and helped usher in a new age of rumble controllers. But how did this game come together? Well, on this episode of Beta64, I'm going to be going though just that.
Enjoy!

"Never give up, trust your instincts!" this was the best moment for me in the game. It pushed me as a child and I managed to reach the secret section of the level. What an awesome feeling.
DO A BARREL ROLL!
Slippy: I'm going left!!!
Fox: *immediately goes right*
This was me in Sector Omega
+Kami Tem Ok so it's not just me then.
It happened in the video. Hehe
I hate slippy
Megami yeah I’m tired of saving his ass everytime
R.I.P Rick May "Never Give up, trust your instints." In Star Fox
"I have done nothing but teleporting bread for 3 days." In Team Fortress 2
*You were good son, maybe even the best.*
Extra fun fact: on the same Miyamoto interview found on the Star Fox 64 strategy guide , Miyamoto did admit that originally Star Fox 64 was gonna have the Walker transformation from Star Fox 2. But the development team hated the idea, so Miyamoto compromised with the Landmaster tank and Blue Marine sub.
+Saran The Husky So he's been trying to add his dumb ideas into games for much longer than we previously thought...
+MattPerrette87
To be fair, the walker idea is a great idea.
Why have an ugly ass walker when you can get a badass tank with no combat advantage whatsoever?
The walker was great. It allowed the switch from in air to on ground combat with out having that awkward phase of having the characters physically outside the ship like in Assault.
Am I really the only one who likes the landmaster? Sure, it doesn't make much sense plotwise, but I still liked both Titania and Macbeth (Specially Macbeth), and Aquas' problem wasn't the blue marine to me... just the fact that I can't see anything down there.
It's incredible to see the time and enthusiasm you put into this video! You totally deserve more subs :)!
I never expected you to be here!

HOLY SHIT QUACKITY ON A STAR FOX VIDEO LETS GOOO-
I can't stop replaying your intro, its fucking amazing.
I love it its so weird but awesome
64iOS cool
It has that era from ps1 n64, intro videos
Yea
I love SF64! One of the alltime greats.
Same, haven't been keeping up with Beta64 lately. I'm glad to see this episode
+Javon Jackson The original Star Fox and Star Fox 64 got me into the Nintendo. Now, I am an avid collector and Ninmaniac! :-)
What Peppy said is the equivalent of "This reminds me of the old days!" like, the days he was battling enemies along side Fox's father. In that expression the 10 year thing doesn't necessarily need to relate anything specific.
There is another expression in Japanese which is "jyu nen hayai." Literally it says "you are 10 years early" but really it just means you are still new or inexperienced.
Source: I have lived in Japan for over 10 years and have to decipher certain expressions myself from time to time.
Are you American? What was it like living there at first?
@@supernintendro it sucked so hard he didn't want to talk about it
It's always an awesome day when a new episode of Beta64 comes out. :3
+LuigiStar64 Thank you so much! You just made my day. (^_^)
+Beta64 ur too awesome man
+LuigiStar64 This is not an opinion... This is a very true Fact.
+Beta64 No problem!! Beta elements of games really fascinate me, so I love these videos. x3
Hé! Me too!
4:30 Oh, so that's why Star Fox Zero is advertised with puppets.
Yep. Star Fox on the SNES was too. The box art has a puppet Fox on it.
Cool.
@@sfredd9800 I thought it had a person in a costume
@@ceneblock Look at the legs. Too thin for a real person.
I love Star Fox! Star Fox 64 3D helped me get through a lot of hardships, (no punn intended) and the game brings a smile to my face every time I play a Star Fox game!
StarFox 64's graphics may be outdated, but I still find them extremely cutting edge in general. Specifically, I'm speaking more about the amount of details the developers put in the textures and and other effects to set the mood of the environments. Compared to the original game, StarFox 64 is mind blowing.
Don't forget the 3DS remake made everything have even more detail and the 3D is awesome for Aquas and a few other levels. Also the music is enhanced from MIDI to MP3
Hey guys, The Lylat Wars name change is completely different to the reason why Star Fox was renamed StarWing in Europe! Otherwise the game would be called Starwing 64 :)
Oh! I didn't know this, what is the reason?
...I thought they were both renamed because of an ancient european home computer game called Star Fox?
Redhotsmasher
A ZX Spectrum game, yeah, that story is so muddled, no one can actually say which one is true, though I lean towards the speccy one as no one could legally claim Star Vox is the same thing as Star Fox.
I remember the first (and only) time I had the chance to visit Europe, I came across a local videogame shop in a small town in Spain and saw a "Lylat Wars" cartrigde, and it blew my mind! I had no idea about the name change, I was so impressed, the guy gave me a chance to take a photo of it! I was sooooo close on buying it, but was short on money though but got a nice bargain on an SNES Asterix game. On a side note: Big fan of your videos, greets from México! =D
@@Larry I thought the old Star Fox game that caused that issue was an Atari 2600 game. O_o
It's pretty amazing how they were able to put such good voice acting in even the Super NES games, especially how it was so crystal clear.
You already know this, but it's also cool to see how much of Star Fox 2 they implemented in both Command and Zero!
4:26 Puppets?
Hey, just like the Star Fox Zero commercials.
I have been waiting so long for you to do this!! Thank you so much! Keep up the awesome work :)
Oh man the way the dual laser thingies under the arwing opening up after grabbing the laser power up would have been such an amazing little detail to have in the final version
it is in the final version!
Subscribed! Great stuff! You do these very well! I can just binge watch so many without getting bored.
Always enjoy your videos, dude! Thanks for always making such great content!
Such a great channel, always good to see a new vid from ya come out!
Ultra 64 was mentioned in Killer Instinct arcade
When we heard "Available for your home in 1995. Only on Nintendo Ultra 64!"
This is one of my favorite types of videos and I hope you will do lots more, Beta64
Amazing video man, your content is really great. I really like how you put so much effort into these and research everything so well!
I really like this channel! Keep up the good work man :D
I love behind the scenes and unreleased stuff, subbed instantly
Look like I chose the right time to subscribe. No more than a week has passed and there's a brand new video on a game that I've only very recently had a chance to play, but rapidly climbed in to being one of my favorite games of all time.
This was your best beta video yet
I love this game so much! Thank's a lot! Good work!
Omg that was a awesome video now all we need is Star Fox adventures Beta 64 episode
8:00 I think Star Fox 64 was going to take place 10 years after when James was the leader and when he was, they went to Titania
You really stepped up the intro, I love it.
I love the structure of these videos. :)
I'm still bitter that Star Fox 2 wasn't released. Literally no one would have complained about it. I think it's wasteful that they just decided to just not release such a technically impressive game.
It is quite a shame. It's pretty fun, too!
+King Harkinian Your comment should be getting thousands of likes, man! Star Fox 2 ftw!
+King Harkinian Your comment should be getting thousands of likes, man!
+Video Game History And it's only a beta rom that we've played! A true final game actually exists, and I want to play it so badly!
Fortunately the game has been released finally alongside other SNES classics in a successor to the NES mini.
great video, loved starfox 64 so this was very interesting
Peppy: do a barrel roll! Fox: doesn’t do it
Love star fox 64 such a great game
Fantastic video! I loved playing this with my brother. It was so much fun shooting at Andross' brain!
I know right and I'm an only child
Thanks Dude for showing me video material I never saw!!
I know a lot of old images in all the magazines, but video??? Not in my days as a young gamer ^^
Dig the intro mate! Gr8 vid btw!
what beautiful beta footage of corneria
in a weird way beta footage can look so cool
love it! keep up the good work!
Loved the video, and love the others too! Although one problem... Now I'm going to have to hook up my old N64 and find my copy of Star Fox 64, because I don't even remember playing the underwater level! Anyway keep up the great work!
It's one of the hardest levels to get to because it's quite far along the hard/top path of the planet map, so you have to beat the secret Corneria boss to get to Area Y (or Sector Y? Been too long.), get enough hits (kills) in Area Y, then ??? to stay on the hard lath until you get to the water level. I have seen my dad play (and beat) it back in the day, but I was never good enough to stay on the hard path beyond Area Y myself.

I think Star Fox Assault is the best game of the series.
lets do a beta64 of beta64 that'll be meta as fuck
Simply, SF 64 is the best SF game ever. SF 64 is a unique experience.
amazing video. I didn't realize Itoi worked on the script
I usually don't comment before watching the whole video because I think it's really douchey, but hearing the Onette theme put a huge grin on my face! I love the new opening :D
The early images are from Spaceworld 1995 B Roll footage. So early it was still using the original Star Fox Arwing Models from the SNES version.
The intro is oddly satisfying to watch.
God. Seeing Starfox teaser clips as a kid was so exciting.
I love this video!
god i love all of your videos man, they should all get 10 million views
Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoy watching them. :)
always dude, you never fail to amazing me with these videos
+Beta64 this was one of my top 3 N64 games when i was a kid along side mario kart 64 and goldeneye 64
You deserve a mil subs not like that Clickbait smike who does alot of fnaf shit
JayKuriN What? Do you mean Smilk?
dang ur views go up fast and good vid
Hey! Still no jokes! Yeah!
Excellent episode.
Thank you for a new video
6:03 that death stare tho...
SF64 is probably the best Star Fox game, no doubt.
You say the L circle was an early laser powerup, but in earlier footage, you can clearly see an early model for the Twin\Hyper powerup being collected
Could've been changed slightly, but then swapped back to the E3 powerup and polished for the final release.
What about being a one-up?
If i'm not mistaken, The Peppy line on titania referring to "10 Years ago" may be a reference to the time when Fox's dad, Pigma, and Peppy tried to take Andross down, IF I'm remembering the star fox story correctly!
very good video, so much nostalgia.
could you do castlevania 64? I remember seeing blocky alpha renders in magazines.
That's a very nice intro there m8
Look at how smooth the Arwing movement is
One of my favourite games of all time
damn it still looks pretty good for an n64 game
LOVE UR NEW INTRO
You know the single-coloured letters for Falco, Peppy, and Slippy? I think those are used in the screens between missions (except for when you travel to Venom directly) to show which members were active in the mission you just completed. Those are visible in the mission timeline at the bottom of the screen.
To be more specific, it was Thunder Birds that Miyamoto was a fan of, and was one of the inspirations for the original Star Fox, hence why puppet versions of Fox, Peppy, Slippy and Falco was made for the commercials (and photographed for the cover art) and inspiring the limited talking animations.
Great video. Star fox !!!!
Awesome. This is one of my favorite games of all time! but what about the unused audio clips? you tell us that there were a ton of unused lines, but you don't play any of them.
I have actually tinkered with the internal files for this game, so I have heard a few voice clips in the files that I don't think are used anywhere, and I can only imagine how many unused lines are in the Japanese versions!
Znd now Zero finally comes along and makes us want a real Star Fox sequel even more than before.
I Like The Intro!
6:54
"No special effects for collecting a Laser Upgrade" yet the Arwing itself does something.
8:00
They could have been hinting at some of the story elements of the game, cuz now we know that Peppy has been flying for a good long while.
Always wondered if this Beta Corneria was still in the cartridge or something.. The Beta version of this game is sooo different from the released game.. I really hope to see a rom hack or something of this game and Mario 64, one day, that will bring these beta version to life.
I know a Mario 64 Beta Revival rom hack exists I think, but it's great enough.
Nice video !
best game of all time, and my favorite of all time
Great vid, pokemon is a good idea for the next vid.
You deserve more credit than you get!
There was also an Atari 2600 game called Star Fox which was (AFAIK) only released in Europe which might've also led to some copyright/legal problems.
YAY NEW BETA64 VID!
Hiiiiiiiiiiiii
I share your opinion on Star Fox 64, it’s my favorite game in the franchise too, #StarFox64isthebestintheseries!
Ratchet and Clank if possible?
thankns bro i never knew about the development of starfox 64 its a shame that starfox 2 got cancelled but thanks to emulators now we can enjoy it in all of its glorious polygon graphics
349 comments at time of this post, man, no way I'm going to find what I'm looking for, so, sorry if this has already been mentioned. But you didn't mention how the Arwing looked in the earliest images. It's not a huge thing, but worth noting. It's appearance was the same as the SNES design from the looks of the images, but given a graphical overhaul. Meaning, at some point at the start, we were going to get what was essentially HD, for the time, versions of the original Arwings. But as we know, that was changed pretty early, as the screen shots you showed us were of the familiar design we know and love today. I would like it if that early design was reused though, but with modern graphics, perhaps as a DLC thing for SF0? I love the current 64/643D/Zero look for the Arwings, don't get me wrong, but I'm sure there are some who would just love to control a graphically overhauled version of the original Arwing design. I would find it interesting myself as a novelty, personally. But things sure could have been different if they hadn't changed the Arwing's design. It's little, and wouldn't have affected SF64 itself, but SFAd, SFAs, SFC, SF643D(By extension), and SF0 could have all been quite different. Maybe they wouldn't, but it's interesting to speculate on it.
Holy shit they really went all in on star fox two that looks absolutely incredible
7:24 there are extra details on the front of the ship too. Especially at the bottom near the docking bay
Wow, video game quotes with meanings behind them? That's new lol
love that the Shield font is the same as "Knuckles the Echinda" in Sonic 3.
REALLY
YASSSSSSSSS I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS!!!!!

The definitive Star Fox, in my opinion. The controls just feel so natural, even to this day.
+DPghoastmaniac2 That's the popular opinion. tbh I think Star Fox 2 would be the definitive Star Fox experience, if only it had better framerate and analog control. :D
+Sato I highly doubt it. Especially considering how Command and Zero turned out, since they share a lot of features taken from Star Fox 2.
DPghoastmaniac2
I don't doubt it at all! None of them quite matched it, though. If they made Star Fox Zero as a full-on recreation of Star Fox 2 with added features instead of just shoehorning a few of them into a remade Starfox 64 it woulda been better IMO. But hey, opinions.
For anyone wondering, the Star Box thing was also an issue with the first game on SNES, with that one being called Starwing, to my knowledge.
I hail from the future! Star Fox 2 was dug up and released, officially, via the snes streaming service on switch.
love starfox 64 so much
well done
I agree that most of the stuff in beta I don't really miss in the final version. This game is still great, regardless.
gaming mystery of what peppy say I remember this 10 years ago but its only in the beta video
Aileron Roll* :V
eitherway, yay more Videos :D
The Sarumarine Captain's beta portrait is absolutely horrifying... is that his eye poking out like that? I just saw the Conjuring 2 btw, it was nice knowing what sleep is lol.
Sweet intro
