i'd let somebody straight pull out two of my fingernails to the quick to get the full acoustic version here - honestly think it's the best i've ever heard him sound
what a shame he was never properly recorded playing like this. beautiful guitar playing and singing. johnny sounds great in front of a band, but to me he never sounded better than this, just the man and his guitar. such a talent.
Wow is all I can say. I could listen to a whole album of Paycheck just like this. If there is unreleased tapes of him with just voice and guitar, I know there's many of his fans would love to have it.
“Money don’t mean nothing, unless your heart feels good”. What a man. What he said right there speaks to me. I always say that the day I discovered country music, I discovered the language of my heart, my soul. It speaks to me in a way I can’t even begin to describe. When I can’t explain how and what I feel, I put on some country music and it does the job far better than I ever could.
Not underaided ... he was talented and people knew it... but Paycheck was out of control. Fighting all the time. Drugged out of his mind on coke and people in the business just didn't want to deal with it. Same for George Jones... almost lost his career also.
I wish I could go back in time to this very moment and be sitting there listening. Sometimes you come across videos and you just know you’re seeing a special place and time. That moment will live forever now.
Definitely a wild, rough cut, hard living man but a man who help tons of people and knew the mistakes he made and made his wrongs right. You gotta love this man!
To me, this is better than any of his recorded material. Would LOVE a full album of him playing guitar and singing with just a single mic in a room. His voice really shines when he sings quietly in a natural sounding setting. It's unbelievable.
I agree with these comments. Why is this all cut up??? I want to hear the full song! Both of these versions are so much more beautiful & poignant than the recorded ones...
I keep coming back again and again to this, probably one of the most beautiful few minutes of video I’ve ever seen, you can see johnnys soul man, sounds crazy to u probably but he’s just so damn real..
The best video on CZcams, Ronnie and Johnny will live forever as legends and this version of Sharon Rae is such a tender, beautiful song. Thank you for posting this treasure.
He has a unique voice for a country singer. It has the southern sound but there is something else in it that's not always found in country. Can't quite put a finger on it
When a singer can be themselves and sing from their true soul without having someone say sing it like this or that you get a piece of their soul in their voice. Sadly some will try and control people and not let them be their authentic self.
Just to check, this isn't from the documentary "Still Alive and Kickin'" narrated by Dan Aykroyd about Ronnie Hawkins, right? It's a separate doc? Would help in tracking down the original recordings
“You’re only as old as you feel”. Woman, “you’re right”. JP “that’s a lie”. Made me laugh. Damn that acoustic version of Sharon Rae is much better than the produced version…
Jeez, cocaine made Johnny very introspective. Lol. You can’t deny he was an unbelievable talent and one of a Fkn kind. The human condition, it is a bitch. RIP Possum
Anyone know where I can find more oh this raw acoustic/ raspy / melancholy/ type of vibe of music of his or anyone else’s?? Something about it reminds of fog lake or Simon joyer. Need more man
@ilford57 do you happen to have this entire documentary you seem to have clipped this from? Would love to find some way to make it publicly accessible if possible! Cheers
Anybody know where to find the source material for this video? I'd love to see the full documentary or television special but i can't find anything when i search for "the hawk".
Just a little less, and Charles Mason could have been Johnny Paycheck, and vice-versa. And I say that with respect. There's a fine line between "out there" and "lost." Some of our greatest talents have been on both sides.
wait, I can't find any movie on IMDB or anywhere called "The Hawk"? at first I thought this was from "Heartworn Highways" but i dont think it is, where's this from??
Such a great JP song and footage I tried it a while back as best I could make out with open D tuning capo 3rd fret that leaves open chord F, then Bb/Eb, Gm and C, by working around these chords I came up with the following in the link below and I put a little Johnny Paycheck video together with it. Hope that helps? czcams.com/video/GIpAgyez8oo/video.html
Who wouldn't love a full album of just him and that acoustic guitar?
OOOOO man
I would die for it
Totally man, that dude had layers that not many people got to uncover.
Actually, I would love a full album of Johnny and the guitar AND all the conversation in between. This stuff is priceless and cannot be duplicated.
Love this so much!
This man was pure talent. The country music performers of today don't hold a candle to the likes of Johnny Paycheck.
Your right
Johnny needs to be in the Hall of fame!
Still right
100% TRUTH
Every time I watch this, I wish that there was a complete acoustic version of "Sharon Rae."
i'd let somebody straight pull out two of my fingernails to the quick to get the full acoustic version here - honestly think it's the best i've ever heard him sound
Is there more of JP in this movie? What’s the name of the movie? Can it be found?
Me too! Who ever made this documentary has the unedited song. We should find him and ask him to post it!!
It has to be somewhere recorded you can hear it in the back ground let me know if you ever find it.
Ronnie the hawk Hawkins and Donnie young
The “if I’m the real Johnny Paycheck, then I’ll die” hit me. Feel like that sometimes
You ain’t kidding brother.

This is my new favorite video on the entire internet. Wish it went on and on...
Iv watched it 10 times just today
Bless his soul. He was right when "money don't mean a thing" He was a real one. Miss him. We need more "Paychecks" this day and time.
I wish I could go back in time to this very moment and be sitting there listening. Sometimes you come across videos and you just know you’re seeing a special place and time. That moment will live forever now.
A lot of people look over paycheck but he was one of the greatest to have ever been
I wish my dad was alive right now. I could have one of the best conversations that ever existed. Now i have these with my son. To be continued.
Real outlaws and music men are hard to come by now in the world but at least we got theses videos to understand the legends
I agree we still got the videos of true out laws
Straight from the soul
Definitely a wild, rough cut, hard living man but a man who help tons of people and knew the mistakes he made and made his wrongs right. You gotta love this man!
Johnny Paycheck lived his songs.
This is exactly how I want to hear Paycheck raw and real
Man this song got me through some dark nights of the soul
Hey Johnny we all love u man...
🧠💯❣️🎶
If you have never had a moment with a friend like they've had at 3:08 you ain't got no friends....
He was on that night. Great talent.
Well, he’s on the roll here it seems. But man, the talent of JP just shines light like thunder in a dark night.

Chop us out one Johnny
This haunting grunge version of coked up paycheck singing sharon rae... it's mana from heaven
What a great voice and stylist. It's a pity talent comes with personal troubles a lot of the time.
Why didn’t I know this guys music?
That was so fin dope!!!
I wish I could find and unedited version where it's just the song
He has a unique voice for a country singer. It has the southern sound but there is something else in it that's not always found in country. Can't quite put a finger on it
Agreed, and I love his voice because of that. I think it has something to do with the fact that he's from Ohio.
When a singer can be themselves and sing from their true soul without having someone say sing it like this or that you get a piece of their soul in their voice. Sadly some will try and control people and not let them be their authentic self.
He grew up in Greenfield about 50 miles east of where I live. We’ve got a funny dialect here. Kinda half south, half north
@@Maintenancebay I think you nailed what I hear as unique about his voice.. thanks.
@@JM-zq9em He also bares a striking resemblance to my uncle, especially here with just the moustache
Gawd dang man this is great
I was never around when he was present. But I miss him

An absolute Legend

Anyone else think that these thoughts he had about aging are a foreshadow of his song old violin?
Donald Eugene Lytle....AKA Johnny Paycheck...RIP
Wish I could see the raw footage of sharon rae.
Where can I find that movie?
Ol Paycheck's lookin rough here

God I wish they would have actually recorded acoustic versions of these songs
i would kill for the tabs to both songs

can anyone figure out the chords he uses in ill leave the bottle on the bar? please i really wanna learn this version
Does anyone know of a tab for "I'll leave the bottle on the bar"? My musicianship is lacking.
My ears aren't working, is he tuned to G? Beautiful sound on that little guitar.
Open G tuning but pitched up to something close to A I think.
I’ve been trying to figure out how he got that sound. Gives me chill bumps.

It’s in the key of E.
it’s open D

Cut us out a fat one Paycheck.
Does anyone know that guitar tuning?
drugs
Yes, Johnny had a real bad drug problem. Real bad. It's difficult to watch the footage during his bringe era. His gaunt sunken face is scary.
Watch the show “tales from the tour bus” it tells his story with a little humor.
@@jonathanpatterson4888 it barely tells his story at all

What doc is this from?????
Joe Wright an old Doc on Ronnie Hawkins. some late night footage on Ronnie's bus
I just saw that in the description. Thanks
