  • So today I have something very exciting to share!
    I was lucky enough to be one of the first photographers IN THE WORLD to get my hands on the brand new Nikon 800mm PF for some Pre-Release shooting! Alongside fellow Nikon Ambassador Konsta Punkka, we headed up to the Finish Arctic to give this lens a test and go searching for some wildlife.
    As this is a pre-release video I can't dive into to much detail about the lens before launch, but I can say WOW this thing is light. It's easily handhold-able for a whole days shooting. The S line glass delivers the optics we are coming to expect with the Z mount and overall, I think this is going to be a game changer for many wildlife photographers who are going to get the access to the 800mm for the first time!
    SO many people are going to love this lens.
    I can't wait to share more about the lens in some future videos...
    I'll see you in those soon, so be sure to Like, Subscribe and hit that bell notification to be the first to see them!
    If you want to see more from me, be sure to check out my Instagram @TomMasonPhoto where I'll certainly be uploading some images from the 800mm when I can.
    Soon you'll also be able to check out my website for portfolios, workshops and more! www.tommasonphoto.com
    As always guys thanks for watching and I'll be in the comments for any questions! Get out there and enjoy your wildlife photography!

    Nikon appears to have hit one out of the park with this lens. Kudos to them.
    As a Canon RF user, my choice of 800mm lenses are approx. $1,000 or $17,000. I have the RF f/11 which is great, but has limitations. I wonder if this is justification for some specialist/enthusiast wildlife photographers to switch brands?

    • @TomMasonPhoto
      @TomMasonPhoto  Před 2 lety +1

      Yeah I think this is going to be one of those lenses that truly pulls people to the Nikon system, especially for bird photographers wanting that extra reach!

    • @KevinNordstrom
      @KevinNordstrom Před 2 lety

      1.4x converter on the canon rf 100-500 gets you close @ $3500 which is a solid medium, or third party sigma lenses with converter at @ $2,300, besides those options, yeah you either have the f11 primes or the f4 which is the price of a car lol

    • @ED-on8to
      @ED-on8to Před 2 lety

      I am shooting with Canon as well, and I love the Canon body‘s, but I wish me a 200-600mm like the Sony one!
      That would be so awesome.
      In terms of switching to Nikon.
      Well, I guess you will only get fully happy with the Nikon Z9, which makes the switch a lot more expensive.
      But I agree that Nikon has some very interesting lenses, with the 800mm F5.6 and the 400mm F2.8 with inbuild 1.4x telecoverter!
      I will probably not switch, because I think that Canon is the big sleeper in the game.
      If the Canon EOS R1 is what we want, and they bring some good wildlife lenses in the next 2 years, they are the soild nr. 1 again.
      And I guess that is going to happen!
      What’s your opinion on that?

    • @ED-on8to
      @ED-on8to Před 2 lety

      @@KevinNordstrom The Canon RF 100-500mm is probably a good lens.
      But F7.1 at 500mm?
      That makes it almost useless for wildlife photography.
      It is one of these products where Canon was scared to make it too good, I guess.
      So in my opinion you don‘t even have to think about a telecoverter.

    • @TomMasonPhoto
      @TomMasonPhoto  Před 6 měsíci

      So it depends on the shoot, but sometimes of course having a CPL is handy for reducing reflections / saturating colours etc, I have one for my 300mm 2.8 and certainly find it useful for certain situations, and will in time also add the version for my 600mm.

    This is a great video review. Its great that Nikon are making some really good products lately, but unless you're an NPS member or a reviewer, you simply can't get hold of many of these new products. Z9 was launched months ago and as far as the UK is concerned, no dealer can say when stock is going to arrive.

    • @dafyddthomas7299

      Good point - luck of the draw on most pre-ordered / ordered Nikon Z stuff, manage to bag the 24-120 (pre'ordered Day 1) and got Z9 back in Jan - not NPS but traded 2 x Z6 II via London Camera exchange about 2 weeks after released and surprised to receive it in Jan. Not sure what real problem(s) are with Nikon; parts shortages, manufacturing line restrictions / not enough factory space including available staff ?. Would it be wise for Nikon to expand / increase factory / manuf space ?, automate manufacturing ? especially in declining Market and unfortunately due to several Nikon management %$$%$% ups they have gone from No 1 - then to No 2 (Canon leading) and now No 3 - (below Sony & Canon)

I have a Sigma 300-800mm F5.6 @ a back breaking 5.9kg but yes slightly better light. I think the new 800mm @ 2.3kg is lighter than the 300mm f2.8 that is definately great news. I really wonder if the Z9 will even work with my Sigma 300-800mm.

It's nice for the 300 PF at 0.24x, but a weakness of the 500 PF at 0.18x. I' hope this is over 0.2x, 0.3x would be very nice.

      Not yet, but it will be out soon. Look at the prices of the 300 pf, 500 pf, and that will give you a bit of a hint of where it might come in (i.e. $5.989 USD?). That's my guess. I believe this is part of a Nikon strategy to both keep Nikon shooters buying Nikon gear, and to entice new shooters and shooters of other brands (i.e. look at the price of the Canon 800 f/5.6).

    • @jonnyanderson2271
      @jonnyanderson2271 Před 2 lety +1

      @@dance2jam I’d pay those prices for a 500 to 800 prime (I’m hoping one day). That price is more realistic than paying around £17, 000 (stupid money) for a 800 lens. I’d only consider getting an 800 if I were on locations photographing like harriers, white tailed/golden eagles and ospreys all the time. Unfortunately for that is not the case at the minute but soon…

    • @dance2jam
      @dance2jam Před 2 lety +1

      @@jonnyanderson2271 I'm a relatively new photographer (few years) and shoot with the Nikkor 600mm f/4 (do not own the 500mm f/5.6 pf - but it would be nice) and for the scenario (Harriers, Golden Eagles, Osprey) I've often wondered if a lens like this (800mm f/6.3) be too much reach? I can't even imaging (perhaps because I'm not that good, nor is the lens AF) of trying to get a barn swallow in flight -(i.e. fast, erratic). It is difficult not to drool over increased reach at perhaps 1/3rd the price of a non-PF 800mm prime, but I'm just curious how useful it will be. Now a 600mm f/5.6 VR PF weighing 3.5 lbs. would be the sweet, portable, spot for handholding. Too bad it's not on the roadmap!!
