  • The Nikon 800mm 6.3 PF is here!
    Really excited to share this video from the Arctic, testing out the new Nikon 800mm 6.3 PF alongside fellow Nikon Ambassador Konsta Punkka.
    We had a great time putting this lens to the test in northern Finland, getting the chance to explore the tundra and track down some subjects. I was truly impressed with just how flexible this new 800mm is, the ability to use it so easily handheld, along with the extended reach is going to make this a truly WANT lens for so many of us wildlife and nature photographers.
    As you'd expect with any brand new Nikon prime it has all the latest and greatest technologies packed in, offering superb performance in what certainly is the most portable ultra telephoto lens. The feel when attached to my Z9 is superb with the weighting and balance perfect for use in the hand. Having held the Lens for multiple days bumping about on the back of a snowmobile I can say it certainly lives up to its design intentions!
    I really feel so many of you guys are going to love this lens. Lightweight, awesome optical performance and telephoto reach with a price...That for this lens, still blows me away as much as it did when I was first told!
    Pre orders I feel are going to fill up rather quickly...
    If you want to see more from me, be sure to check out my Instagram @TomMasonPhoto where I'll certainly be uploading some images from the 800mm over the next few days as well as posting extra video clips.
    I will also have another video coming out shortly with myseklf and Konsta breaking down our thoughts on this new long lens!
    Soon you'll also be able to check out my website for portfolios, workshops and more! www.tommasonphoto.com
    As always guys thanks for watching and I'll be in the comments for any questions! Get out there and enjoy your wildlife photography!

    Awesome. I see you’re shooting with the 400 F2.8 for a few, I have to imagine that felt like a tank. Canon really dropped the ball on their super telephoto lenses. Nikon will be king again with the value and quality they are bringing

      The Canon is actually f/5.6 but that really isn’t much of a difference and also doesn‘t necessarily mean that the Canon is any brighter. Also the RF 800mm f/5.6 only offers 4 stops of stabilization whereas the Nikon has up to 5.5

    Absolutely beautiful photos and videos! I've noticed when shooting with my 400mm I sometimes get heat waves distorting the image even in winter. I imagine that would be even more true with 800mm. How do you deal with that when you come across it?

    • @TomMasonPhoto
      @TomMasonPhoto  Před 2 lety +3

      I have come across it a few times in the past but not on this trip, personally I tend just to avoid the shooting angle or re position, mainly it’s only when I’m not close enough to my subject I can see them, when I’m actually within what I’d personally classify as “photographic range” I rarely have seen them due to the obvious fact of just being closer with less distance between me and my subject when rising vapour/heat can interfere!

      @TomMasonPhoto  Před 9 měsíci

      I didn't end up getting one of these because I added the 600mm F4 to my kit, the lightweight nature is fantastic for the 800mm PF but for my work the weight isn't really an issue and the flexibility of rate 600mm f4 with the built in TC was a no brainer, although obviously its a far more expensive lens than the 800mm!

    Hi Tom, what a piece of kit this lens is, - wow - i-m not up to snuff with the nikon 'z series' as I've seen reviews that the - z series are married to video and not so much stills, - is this urban myth or fact? Love your videos, I love your enthusiasm, regards.
    Stuart

    • @TomMasonPhoto
      @TomMasonPhoto  Před 2 lety +1

      Hey Stuart, so I think one of the big bonuses of the Z system is for video creation, better AF for video, as well as shooting modes/ frame rates and codec but for stills it also had some great upgrades - silent shooting, faster speeds, as well as the ability in the viewfinder to have a live preview of how images will look and a constant histogram, all super handy for the stills shooter as well!

    The 800 mm is the new 50 :) Nice video.. You guys got some great images/footage. Nice to see the 800 mm focal length getting some love. I do wonder about the blown out whites in some of the shots. is that limit of the Z9 dynamic range ? Or exposer/post processing issues or just personal choice ?

    • @TomMasonPhoto
      @TomMasonPhoto  Před 2 lety +1

      Hey Gregory, in regards to highlights I think it may be a limitation on CZcams compression rather than the Z9 as in my Lightroom none of the images when exported or processed are clipped on the whites. I do find it’s quite hard sometimes to display photography properly on CZcams! Nothing like a real print for sure. Cheers, Tom!

    Great sneak peak! Greetings from Bulgaria. I was staying away from Wildlife photography but here I am and oh lawd, I'm getting anxious... I've asked on Steve Perry's video but another point of view would be good. I'm shooting on z6ii and having 100-400mm Z but no other telephoto lenses but of course that now I want, haha. The real life however is with limited or no existent budget but anyway, I'll get them but the question is what should a person like me (I'm not a driver but backpacker) choose in case I can get F mount 600mm f/4 FL VR for the same price NOW or to pre-order this brand new 800mm 6.3 ? :S
    I want the reach but the faster F stop is always priority... until we talk about the size/weight being the real issue. If I get the 600mm this means more expenses on buying FTZ + 1kg heavier lens and eventually gimbal head, although Peak Design's tripod is top quality. Any advice would be great and happy shooting!

    • @TomMasonPhoto
      @TomMasonPhoto  Před 2 lety +1

      That's a hard one, in terms of long distance carrying, the new 800mm PF is going to be a dream, far easier to lug about, especially if you don't have a car/transport and are walking long distances. The 600 f4 is a epic bit of kit too, gives that extra little bit of aperture but would need the FTZ etc for the Z mount... I'd probably look out for the 600mm on the Z roadmap if the purchase doesn't need to be imminent. The 800mm PF however will certainly be the lightest of the options for that ultra tele reach!

    • @dicekolev5360
      @dicekolev5360 Před 2 lety

      @@TomMasonPhoto I'm pretty sure the 600Z will be with TC like the 400Z and no matter f4 or f2.8 - it will be waaay more expensive than this 800 or 600 f4 Fmount. Damn it.... decisions-decisions... Thank you for the answer!

    this movie made me laugh. firstly, it is at such a time of the year and in such an open area you can have such a dark lens. in case you go to the forest you will cry that you have something like that in your hand. Another thing, do not crawl because in the snow you are dressed in black anyway and the animals can see the contrasts very well. hears and smells another thing, so don't play the comedy. Yes, I know what I'm saying because my uncle, a retired forester, spent his whole life in the forest and I went with him to the forest. birds do not flee like other species in nature. 800mm is not required for birds.
