iRacing Paints - Decal Layers & Car_num Files, Simplified

  • *EDIT: A lot of iRacing's paints now support 32 bits per pixel, so don't worry so much about saving as 24 bits per pixel as I mention in this video.*
    Welcome to a video I've been meaning to make for nearly a year, explaining iRacing Paint Files and how they work, in a very simplified way.
    I won't bore you with too many ins and outs of how to use iRacing Paints, but instead will give you a quick look at how easy it is to manually manage these files, as opposed to relying on Trading Paints to do it all.
    In this video I also cover Car Decal Files and Car_num Files which can transform the overall look of your cars to match them to specific series.

    Great video, so many people find this confusing but you make it so simple for them to understand.

    for the custom number files do you add tga at the end of car_num_000000.tga or car_num_000000 and thats it?

      So long as you choose TGA as the file type, that shouldn't make a difference.

    I am having a problem where when I upload my paints on trading paints it lowers the decal quality of everything, even the mandatory decals are low quality and super pixelated

    • @ChazDraycott
      @ChazDraycott  Před 3 lety

      Yeah, iRacing paints can be very temperamental like that. I don't have a solid solution for that, sorry.

    Ive got a question. I painted a car and did everything in the video and it shows up in test sessions but when i get into a race it doesnt show up. Any idea how I can fix it?

      Sounds to me like you have trading paints running and it is cleaning up what it thinks is an old paint to them replace it with nothing.

    Hey Chaz, I've uploaded a decal layer to trading paints but unfortunately the decal layer doesn't get downloaded after I race this paint. Do u know why?

    • @ChazDraycott
      @ChazDraycott  Před 2 lety

      I think you have to have Trading Paints Pro or something. Come to think of it I don't remember Trading Paints ever downloading them - they're usually files that are applied manually in paint packs for certain leagues or by the author of the livery themselves.

    Dear Chaz - great video, I directly started to make use of it. Basically I'm struggling with one thing. When ever I'm going to store a "car_xxxx.tga" file in the respective directory you mentioned - I feel it will be deleted or replaced after a time, or when I'm opening the car viewer again. I can store the file, I see first time the result, I can race with the new design, but after a while the design is gone. Any idea?

      Hey Thomas! Thanks very much for the kind feedback. The first thing that springs to mind with the issue you're having is that you may have Trading Paints open and have two options selected that are working together (under Advanced Options).
      - Update my own paints
      - Clear up downloaded files when I exit iRacing
      While the file will update automatically in the viewer because you're bypassing the process of uploading it to Trading Paints, the "Clear up downloaded files when I exit iRacing" setting will be deleting it as soon as you've exited the model viewer, as Trading Paints considers this as an instance of iRacing being open, to look for paints in.
      I hope that makes sense.

      @@ChazDraycott - many thanks - sounds that make sense :-); I changed the settings in Trading Paints and will check it out after the just started maintenance time has been finished.

    do other drivers see all this or is this just what i see?

    • @ChazDraycott
      @ChazDraycott  Před 2 lety

      That depends, bud. It can all be uploaded to Trading Paints, but it can depend on whether other people have the decal layer downloaded, "hide car numbers" ticked and a whole host of other things.
      What exactly is it you're wanting them to see? 😊

      @@oranbooker1356 They're just designs he's done himself by the look of it. That's not a method I've seen before.
      It's the same process as just making a livery and saving it. If you want to use liveries made by other people, I recommend that you use Trading Paints.
