Usually, they have hard cases and pay extra money or additional seat for carrying them in the cabin, as well as cellos and bassos. There are some hard cases designed for travelling but they're quite expensive (eg BAM cases brand has some products for travellers), maybe around USD 4k each. Nevertheless, this value is not much considering the instrument value itself. Also, having in mind how suitcases are managed in airports, I wouldn't recommend airplane / cargo hold for instruments 🤔
