    Questions:
[0:16] What does freelancing mean to you? I mean, what do you think when you hear that word, “freelance”?
[0:58] So why did you chose to go freelance in the first place? Why not full-time somewhere?
[2:32] What’s it take to become a freelancer? What important qualities do you need to have you think?
[4:44] How would you say you manage your time as a freelancer?
[5:26] OK serious question, can anyone become a freelancer? Can anyone just jump in?
[6:01] Can you make a lot of money freelancing?
[6:09] How do you charge your clients? Do you go hourly, weekly, project base, or what?
[7:34] But say someone is set on hourly I and came up with the great idea on a walk, or in the shower. How do you bill for your “thinking?”
[8:32] Do you use contracts or any type of agreements?
[8:59] Which term do you prefer? Freelancer, contractor, independent, studio of one? Any preference?
[9:35] How do you handle the unknowns of freelancing? It had to be scary, not knowing if you’d have a job next month or next week even.
[10:21] But at least full-time you have job security, right?
    [10:38] Why shouldn’t someone become a freelancer?
[11:05] OK, why should someone become a freelancer?

These interviews are enormous for anyone who considers going freelance. Great questions are answered, the most insightful was how Mackey explained his 'fixed' billing rate. Keep em coming!

This is a great video but I would've really loved for him to clarify how he defines "freelancer" because I think the term tends to be too loosely used interchangeably with what is essentially a solo-preneur or one man design firm. I think a freelancer tends to be someone who works under contract for agencies, marketing firms, design firms, inhouse design departments and alike. A lot of times that work can be for three months and on site or remotely but is usually paid hourly or a set salary for that period of work. This is what I would call a freelancer. What it appears Mackey is talking about here is someone who deals directly with his own clients, fields prospects, pitches the job, lands the client and does the work, basically handling everything from administrative stuff to the design work. This isn't freelancing at all, it's being a design firm as one person. So I think clarifying this delineation would've really helped out a lot. Far too often people think that if you design from home or are a one man operation you are "freelancing" and that's simply not the case. It takes a lot more skill to be what Mackey is describing, because you have to learn the non-design in's and outs of the business to successfully run your design firm.

Thanks for making this Dan. Great interview with Mackey. I really love the points Mack made about understanding yourself and knowing when you won't fit in an environment. I worked in an agency setting and like he said just someone nit picking at your work or capping you off on your ideas is something as an independent designer drove me to the path I'm on now. Looking forward to watching more.

I really don't get why this is necessary for every graphic designer I've seen to do. I have done my research as what personality traits are needed for a graphic designer. That's all fine and dandy. But i have felt lost for for a long time as that's all I have been finding, either that or "buy this really expensive program to start practicing your design skills when you are already on the brink of being drowned by student loan debt". It's the equivalent of if I asked how I should file taxes for the first time with very little prior knowledge as to managing finances only to the response of "just be patient, and youll get it eventually". I have no portfolio, no money, no college degree, and there's nothing I can do be a graphic designer the way I am now apparently
