  • Here is an example of a Zickos kit that is in tremendous condition. Usually these are falling apart, but someone took good care of this one! Maybe it will be for sale eventually, but just part of our collection for now, enjoy!!

I SO wanted one of these kits as a teen! Very cool stuff. Little-known fact: Bill Zickos dreamed-up the Hydraulic head, and contacted fellow Kansas (at the time) manufacturer Evans Drumheads, to manufacture them. These drums came standard with Hydraulics top and bottom, either double-clear, or double-blue. It lent these drums a VERY thunderous tone! Still cool, even today. :)

Sounds like Evans Inc “borrowed” that “innovation” for themselves - very interesting!

I remember Floyd Sneed playing a clear Zickos kit with Three Dog Night the first time I ever saw a clear acrylic drum set knocked me out. As I remember the sound from those drums were thunderous he even played a section of his drum solo with bare hands no sticks. I wonder if the Zickos drums ever had the shell cracking issues that the original series Ludwig Vistalite drums had..I have a mid-1970's Ludwig Vistalite kit and the 9 x 13" tom has developed a shell crack.

I recorded a demo on a set of these at Studio One in Atlanta in the 70’s and they sounded like thunder. At the time I had a set of clear Vistalites. The Zickos weighed much more than the Ludwigs and were much louder.

The Zickos shells were thicker, seamless, cast acrylic, as opposed to heated, rolled, and seamed. A much better shell actually.

Had a 4 piece kit back in the 70s,it was the one half of a double kit setup, extra long kick drum size I believe was a 22x24 toms 12x14 and floor Tom 18x18.The kick drum was so long it used 4 spurs, 2 in front 2 in back to keep it stable, sounded like a cannon. The only hardware it came with was a GHOST foot pedal. Like the person said below, this kit was very heavy and really a pain to transport.

hey steve...i believe another zickos artist was dennis wilson of the beach boys...and the floyd sneed kit you spoke of is right here on youtube at a live studio concert in england with 3 dog night and if you look at his kit- he's a right handed drummer but, all his toms are reversed over his double bass drums-they look like {starting from the right to left}8x12,9x13 on his right bass drum and 10x14 mounted in a snare stand and 12x15 mounted on his left bass drum...his bass drums are either 14x20's or 14x22's hard to tell as they're 8 lug and two floor toms on his right {maybe 16x16 and 16x18?] and i believe another floor tom on his hi-hat side {but not certain as i haven't seen the film in quite some time} i believe it's from late '72...keep up the excellent work and cheer's mate!

I had a Zickos. As my first professional drumset I thought they were fine But I did not like the rims and it didn’t have the blue hydraulic heads on it from Evans. But the worst thing about this drum set that probably gave its great sound Is there unbelievably heavy it was all I could do the move the bass drum, The times were also very heavy I am assuming that they’re much thicker than the Ludwig Vistalites. I sold the drum set for $400 in very good condition because I could not take the weight on my back. Lol it was also hard to mount a bass drum pedal because of the metal rims on the bass drum was not very thick. But as Steve showed you you could mount a new Tom head extremely quickly. I believe Keith moon also had a drum set like this.

First failure of this interesting innovative from company: the brand name … plain and simple, the guy shouldn’t have used his family name as a drum product name… But you didn’t hear that from me…
