  • This time I assembled a selection of the best sounding ACRYLIC drumkits from various manufacurers. In this list we have 5 kits, drum sizes are stated and btw there's a price quote for each kit, of course all cymbals are worth extra $$$!

    Well that was frustrating. The 2nd drummer on the LZ Ludwigs hardly played the toms. I've noticed that some of the drummers in these series don't choose very appropriate things to play in order to demonstrate the entire range of sounds these kits offer. They seem more interested in showing off their chops rather than making a functional video. I'm also surprised the producers of these vids weren't more aware of this as well.

  • @evannewell7985

    I'd wager that 90% of the difference in sound we're hearing here is down to head selection and mic'ing.

    • @austincox1709

      yep. if its a 6-8mm acrylic drum shell then theyre practically the same.

    • @kicksnarehats
      @kicksnarehats Před 2 lety

      Hoops make a big difference too. I bought a Pearl Crystal Beat a few years ago. It comes stock with 1.6 mm triple flange hoops on the toms and an acrylic bass drum hoop. I replaced the toms with 3.0 mm hoops and the kick with maple hoops which substantially improved tuning, tone and projection.

      @just82much51 Před 2 lety +1

      Exactly! If you are doing a drum "shoot out", all things need to be the same; same heads, Same running, same mics and placement, same room, same sticks and same drummer.

    the problem with the videos in this series is most of the drummers spend too much time on the snare and cymbals and hardley anytime on toms which is usually the most defining difference between kits, then there is tuning and head types

    I have a Ludwig 'Vistalite' kit from the original series, 1976 manufacture with the blue/olive badges. Clear blue. Picked them up because I always was fascinated with acrylic drums and surprise, no cracks! I found that acrylic drums are loud, open, and project extremely well. Oddly enough I'm currently using the Vistalite kit in a church praise band environment and I do have to use some restraint in playing them but they are working well. I remember Floyd Sneed from 'Three Dog Night' playing an acrylic kit and that's how I got the bug for acrylic drums.

      Depends on who's listening. I really think I'd get bored with the loud flatness unlike wood that has more dimensions which you can manipulate with tuning or metal snares with different overtones like the brightness of brass snares or the mellowness of copper, Uhmnn... oh man know I wanna jam!

    I think the C&C guy did the best demo because he used the toms a lot, it was hard to get the full sound of the drums because not all were mic'd and even though I know what a good set sounds like unmic'd I would have liked to have heard them all on the same level but that being said I liked the C&C the best. Years ago my buddy had what we called his Captain America drum set because it was a Ludwig Acrylic kit that was red, clear, and blue. Thanks for the video

    Good video......the C&C Custom kit , I thought sounded the best. I have enjoyed playing a Tama Silver star Mirage kit for 6 years, and I love them. They sound very good also, are low maintenance, and once you tune them correctly, they almost never go out of tune. Even after a long bumpy ride to a Gig, because the bearing edges are perfect. You don't get that with wood Drums. Also the price was very reasonable. T Y S.R.PURDY 🥁 GOD BLESS

The pork pie had more of the tom sound I prefer but not sure if that was a head and tuning thing though. I want Ian Paice tom sound in an acrylic kit. Ian's floor toms really get it for me personally. Would love to have all these kits though with all the tunings. That would be the ultimate

A friend had a fiberglass Pearl kit that was not great sounding, and at one point I got my hands on some ludwig blue acrylic shells and I thought they sounded like a toy rather than an instrument. So plastic drums came back around, and like plaid bellbottoms not my cup o tea.
