  • By 1936, Judy had appeared in several short films, but Pigskin Parade was her first appearance in a feature length movie. In this film, she sings three songs: "It's Love I'm After", "The Balboa", and "Texas Tornado." Wizard of Oz fans will recognize Jack Haley, the Tin Man, in an early role of his own. This movie is available on DVD and airs often on television.

What a singer she was! And fun to see Jack Haley, Patsy Kelly and delightful Betty Grable along with Judy.

Jack Haley would go on to play Tin Man with Judy as Dorothy Gale in The Wizard of Oz 🌈🧙‍♂️💚

Judy was 13 or 14 when she was loaned out to do this movie. ( that's the problem you have when you're born in June). My understanding is, when this movie was released, all the movie cards that were turned in at the theaters raved about Judy. The little sister, boy could she sing, she's great, she steals the movie, she didn't sing enough. Apparently they could get enough of her. SHE DID STEAL THE MOVIE.

Thank you for the video. It's great to see Judy in her early age. She was wonderful in that time too.

I can't help wondering if Mervyn LeRoy saw this movie and, upon seeing Judy in braids and gingham (very similar to W.W. Denslow's depiction of Dorothy Gale), he was thrown a thought.

You're right. In 1937, pre-pre-production, just concepts really, began about "The Wizard of Oz." The property was purchased by MGM as a project for Judy. Despite folklore that Judy got the role because MGM couldn't work out a deal to get Shirley Temple- eventually Judy came to believe it herself- it was Judy's movie from the beginning. Audience and critical reaction to Judy in "Pigskin" was very positive. Notions of Judy being ugly, a hunchback or "a fat pig with pigtails" came from one source: Judy herself, many years later.

@@akrenwinkle Exactly so; Judy was a good person, but as I've heard someone say, she had a "casual relationship" with the truth. And you're absolutely right: LeRoy had Judy in mind from the very beginning.

This is a fun little movie and when they finally wise up & let Sairy Dodd sing, boy does she blows the doors off the joint!

Is that Judy Catching those or a stunt double? They seem to not show a single unbroken shot of it, but even if it isnt her, Judy's still a great catch *wink*...hehe

This movie was not made by M.G.M.. Judy was loaned out to Fox or Warner Bros., who ever made this movie, and she did steal it by the way.
