I spent my youth i bands like this. We never even got close to this perfection and feeling. This video is maybe the best I have ever seen in big band jazz, adults included! I was touched to tears, as old as I am.
Forget the glitzy glamour of 'The X Factor' and '.....'s Got Talent' where the performer - has but one objectve - fame and fortune - and little real talent ... the vacuous superficiality ... the Justin Biebers' of this world. Very few have even reached a meaningful level on a musical instrument.
Now consider the wonderful work of Maestro Chamorro and Europe's premier youth jazz band. Joan is able to spot a potential talent bubbling beneath the surface - these young people aspire to become 'the best' but there is no 'ego', no posturing, just an absolute love of their music and an unsurpassed level of dedication and a determination to succeed under Joan's magical teaching and guidance. Many of these youngsters will still be in full-time education ; I always wonder where they find the time for their chosen lifestyle.
Where does it all begin for these talented youngsters ? Imagine the joy and parental hugs following the successful audition of a young child ... "Mama, the man from Sant Andreu - he say "Si, Si" ! (Apologies to 'The Man from Del Monte' ! - and please forgive my facetiousness, Joan !) ... Wow ! It must be quite an honour to become a part of the Sant Andreu Jazz Band.
At that point parent and child must know there is no going back and no wish to do so. The prospect of these kids joining such a prestigious group, playing their favourite kind of music to sell-out audiences must be all-consuming ... Rock-on Chamorro !
Thank you! You have no idea how your beautiful comment have just made my day, my unknown friend!
God Bless you!
Maestro, you are an amasing teacher !!!!!!!
This made me very happy; seeing children and young adults play Count Basie in such a soulful way made my day. BTW the muted trumpet solo was amazing.
The trumpet solo is a sweet icing on an already delicious cake.
Always loved this song. Fabulous version by these young musicians. Can’t believe how talented they are at such a young age. Play with great feel. Loved the young guy in the green t shirt. Helped to conduct then play. 🙋♂️🎼🎼👍🇬🇧
I say again terrific...Count Basie would be proud of you.
Estou encantada!!!
Thanks Neal Hefti for this great music! I never get tired of this one.
Delicate! These kids can play - slowly, calmly in this small room, even quieter during Alba's fine solo ... and these harp riffs!
like a chamber concert
I LOVE the way this teacher gets the kids so fired-up and they really play from their hearts 💕- Amazing teacher and fine young musicians- Bravo 👏
The way Alba handles her trumpet capturing the style very authentically is brilliant, which is just like her!!!! The band is beautifully laid back and in absolutely no hurry at all. Just right.
Beautiful in every way-so sweet.
One of my favourite Basie numbers. Thank you Joan and all.
Dear Maestro Joan,
You have no idea how much bliss you bring me watching you bring your young people along playing all this classic jazz, me sitting here in Los Angeles taking it all in. Thanking you again.
As I am in New Zealand. I'm 79 & with this group of musicians, I feel in my teens again. It's great to smile so often these days.
AND in the outskirts of Liverpool UK...
elliota888 More west coast, SF 👏🎧❤️
And me in Melbourne, Australia!!
And me in the Philippines...., at 6:00AM........ 77yo 😊😊😊
I have long secretly waited for you to play this Count Basie's Standard! And now...Wow!
So smoothly done.
In this room, we can only see magical musicians at their best. It is the largest concentration of playing passionate jazz players by cubic meters never seen.
Thank you all. Special thumb up for the tenderness in Carla's guitar.
What is this chart called?
@@MaxRamos8 Li'l Darlin" written and arranged by Neal Hefti for the Count Basie Orchestra.
Don't forget, Easy Money, the SAJB standard, was originally played by Count Basie--here, among other places. czcams.com/video/is5lg2Ic8So/video.html
Mr Ch! You ar one of the most important music person in the world. Jazz music and young people is sort of a guarantee for democracy. Music is developing their brains and they are in to a belonging that is meaningful and keep them of the streets. I am a also a music-teacher, in Sweden, and I teach disabled young people to play. They are, of course, not even close to the level that your students are in to, but I see the same happiness in they're eyes when they are playing together. Thank you for Rita, Andrea and many others that you have under your wings!
Ulf Ekvall, Gotland Sweden
R Ekvall, you are making your contribution to make the world better. Thank you for your service!
No better way sto start my lazy sunday morning, fantastic!
I love the sound of a muted trumpet. 👾
Love Elsa Armengou since she was a little girl. Jean Chamorro has to be the greatest music teacher. A saint. Andrea Motis is a superstar.
Thank you so much.....brings back memories of high school jazz band
I admire you Joan Chamorro, how you bring out the song with your arm movements and your body movements. You feel the song as it is being played. You are amazing Joan Chamorro.❤️
I don't know what Joan feeds these kids, but year after year, rank after rank the program is turning out accomplished, sensitive, enthusiastic, polished musicians. Gives this ol' retired jazz musician/teacher great faith in the future. KEEP IT UP, EVERY ONE OF YOU!!
Carla! ... those delicious guitar chord arpeggios.. and perfect timing.
Yeah, the guitarist always seems the Cinderella on these videos! But it's wonderful music, like Joan hears something in the tunes no one has heard before then gets them played so we can all hear it.
I love watching these SAJB rehearsals. Informal, without the "uniform" of the band, sitting in their own way (Alba and Marçal "Dembele" very close, of course), relaxed but at the same time very focused on what they are doing, you can see them happy and enjoying. And the little trumpet player, Max Munné, "conducting" the orchestra as if he were Master Chamorro ... you can only smile with tenderness and admiration. The Chamorro method in all its splendor.
Outstanding!! I can hear Bobby Darin singing this beauty from over 50 years ago. (Don’t Dream Of Anybody But Me)
Hefti and the Count would be happy listening to those youngsters.
So very wonderful. Lovely trumpet solo💜
Bravo... A refreshing sight to hear and see our younger generation play so well...
This was magic! I feel so privileged to be witnessing this marvelous Man and his young future professional musicians!
Wow, great job. A whole lotta talent sitting in that room.
Beautiful. I love the fellow in the green shirt. He really feels it. A future star!
I think that is Elsa with a new short hair cut?
I'm pretty sure the one in green is a boy. I've seen him in other videos. Isn't that Elsa next to him in the red?
@@GaylordBuzzard Oooo. I think you're right. My apologies to the young (and brilliant) conductor! And Elsa is a young adult now! Well... wonderful music regardless.
I've been watching the SAJB for several years now and almost feel like the kids are my grandchildren. It's a little bit sad when your favorites leave the band and are replaced but that's what the whole experience is about, training young kids until they're ready to fly on their own.
@@DWilliams-ce8nb The boy in the green shirt is Max Munné.
Victor and Joan teaching the next wave of future trumpet players! Love it!
I enjoy watching and listening to this version and never tire.
Satin Doll, one of the most beautiful compositions by Duke Ellington. Very, very nice!!
Simply beautiful!!! Love Alba’s solo!!! Missing Rita!!! Great job JC and SAJB!!!
Watching Joan direct is like watching a ballet. I agree the kid in the green is on it
Never in a million years would I have expected something wonderful like this to be happening in Spain. What a sad commentary on American youth culture. Bravo!
Lil Darling was the very first piece I played in stage band. Bravo! Joan Chamorro. What you achieve with your kids never ceases to amaze me. I still follow your former students. For example, Rita Payes. The world needs more people like you!
I love these videos. When I listen to them,I feel that I'm an alternate universe where good music is still appreciated.
Nice relaxed arrangement! It's fun to watch the younger and older players interact under Mr. Chamorro's direction. Alba Armengou's solo is elegant and tasteful as always.
One of my favorite Count Basie songs. Alba’s solo is perfect. Beautifully done all around! Joan you have created so much talent with these young musicians.
Wow! I searched a few days ago for a Chamorro version of Li'l Darlin' and HERE IT NOW Is!! Absolutely perfect!!
(And the trumpet player in green is an expressive and precise "assistant conductor" - and learning from the best!)
Always one of my favourite jazz classics, and played brilliantly by your wonderful youth orchestra.
Smooth as silk. I played this same arrangement in High School (1984)as 3rd Alto Saxophone and our jazz ensemble never, ever sounded as good. Glad to see the Armengou sisters still holding it down. ☮&❤ to the new band members.
Yeah, baby! This is Juust right!!!
Great hearing music like this!
From California...There are no words...Sublime...Joyous...Joan, you are a saint...Maravillosa!!
Wonderful, Basie and Hefti. I am simply blown away by your ensembles.
I'm embarrassed at what I sounded like in high school. These kids are amazing. (I really loved the trumpet player in the green shirt swinging with the groove during rests.)
True! He - Max? - allows his body to learn the substance of the music.
And, look at Joan Mar - listening and looking attentively although he's not involved, and Victor from 1:10 - full body engagement. This is the way kids do it!
Maestro Joan Chamorro is probably one of the best developer of talents there is. He has transformed these wonderful kids to become future Jazz masters. What a great teacher!! Bravo Maestro Joan and please keep up the good work! Your videos never failed to entertain me!!!
I feel he has ambitions to be a band leader - so watch out a few years down the road!
Basie lives thanks to these youngsters! Great arrangement of this classic jazz song by this extremely talented group.
¡Que increíble Clase! ¡Que increíble Maestro! ¡Que increíbles Alumnos! ¡Que increíble Cercanía! Dios les bendiga siempre
Beautiful song, beautiful Elsa, beautiful solo!
Pardon me, the beautiful solo is played by Alba. Her younger sister Elsa is sitting on the right, with the red shirt, best visible from 3:00.
Fantastic playing from such young and accomplished players. I wish I could have played with a band like this when I was a kid.
I am instantly a fan. Awesome group and a lush and warm sound
Really love this band, so many talented kids.
Am from South Africa I love big band music what am listening to now it is so ....so .....so beautiful wish to play with the band one day
ui guy
Oh what a song! With so much feeling.
John. You an your students are just. the best. Period.
Totale ammirazione per Joan Chamorro. Sei un GRANDE.
Já assisti diversas vezes e continuarei assistindo. É sensacional.
Many, many years ago, when I was hardly older than some of the members of the Sant Andreu band, I used to hear the Basie band play this at Birdland, in New York City. I guarantee that right now, up in jazz heaven, Mr. Basie is smiling.
thank you Frederik :-D

Joan: Aque esta en Reino Unido. Increible.
Unbelievable. Simply beyond belief!!!!
Their 'The Waters of March' from 2015, 2019 will slay you to the bone.
"Spike" and Freddie and Sonny, Quincy and the two Franks and all those guys would fall right in.
Chamorro deserves all the love in this world.
They're a pool bunch of extra talented gifted of musical artists, I LOVE YOU ALL
Such an inspiration. Joan you Sir really understand how to share your love and feel for the music. No one in that room is intimidated they take direction so well. It’s you who teaches them to feel what they have inside. Because you can express what you feel they express freely what they have. Keep unlocking those minds.
la classe comme toujours !
It’s wonderful. I don’t have words to say.
Fantastic opportunity to see how Joan gets the band started on a new song. I love it.
Alba que expresión tan emocional❤
Beautiful piece. Thanks for uploading this video!
Nice. Very well done.
Felicidades Joan 👏👏👏
All the solos sounded great!
A Classic, so well done! The young man in the green Shirt is a 'Joan' in training, clearly! He has a big future.
You all have that laid back Basie swing down cold. Love it.
Thank you to the director, for teaching the kids the music. Absolutely perfect!
Joan Chamoro nezklame svou produkcí včetně mladých talentů!
how sweet! what a lovely surprise
Will be 80 this year, jazz man and drummer all my life. Would love to sit in. Any place for a new pupil?
Masterpiece!!!!!
Beautiful. Time. Warmth. Intonation. Balance. Sensitivity among section mates. Energy. Respect. Love. Listening.
Having played this tune for over 40 years now, I can tell you that few professional ensembles achieve these ideals nearly as closely as this group.
Bravo to all players, even those sitting out were feeling time and listening with respect and admiration.
As a trumpet player - major props to that section - lead, soloist, and section work.
But one (tiny) suggestion - (and I had to really stretch to find something to mention!) List to and match your note endings/lengths throughout, especially as one section hands off to another.
Basie’s band slayed other bands with (among other things), their note endings...
I am very happy for each and all of you who contributed to this marvelous performance.
Major RESPECT!
Sitting outside on this Sunday afternoon listening to this song made the time seem brighter and more soulful.
Joan, vous êtes un magicien !
Maravilhoso!!! Obrigada!!!
True Magic! Thanks from Russia! :)
