The AI will DNF weather you have DNFs on or off, that setting just affects if you can DNF or not.
Yeah and the AI usually just DNF from tire blowouts or hand grenadine the engine.

You should turn on Rivals to make things more interesting since you're gonna insult everyone (don't do it your teammates though), and always keep Draft Partners enabled (at Superspeedways, they're a necessity, and at Intermediate Ovals, the AI can shove you into the wall and make you miss the turn if you want the challenge). Keep Relaxed yellows for any plate tracks or anything above 1.5 miles in length, strict for the rest to make things interesting with caution strategies (as long as you don't intentionally bring them out). Infrequent Mechanicals and More Stability for the AI.

Yes look up a tutorial and make sure you use winrar
I always set my heat 5 game in hard and easy mode I figured out myself
I always start the race with an automatic transmission

Nascar games have no hope if people keep claiming games like NR2003 and Thunder 2004 are the best games. They weren't even good at the time. NR2003 is basically a hot lap simulator the AI is not that impressive.
