Amazing facts about this performance:
1.) Luke gave Tracy absolute total control over the entire performance. Told her she called 100% of the shots.
2.) Tracy only asked for all of her original band mates to be a part of the performance. That’s not Luke’s band. That’s not even the band Tracy has performed with for the few times she has appeared over the past 10 years. Every musician there from the drummer to the violinist was part of the original instrumental ensemble that Tracy had when she originally came out with this song over 30 years ago.
3.) Tracy flew into Los Angeles to rehearse this song with Luke and the band, and as soon as this performance was over she left the building and was back in a plane to her home 2 hours later. She refused all interviews, signings, parties, and business offers. She said she came only to pay tribute to Luke.
This is why this is an iconic performance. Absolute respect for the artistry here.
I have so much respect for her. I wish I could be her friend.
Love hearing the facts behind great things like this. Makes it mean so much more in a different way
Thanks for the info
🥲I wish we could appreciate and respect everyone like these two have!!
Thank you, that gave me a new perspective on how I viewed this having respected Tracy for so many years, challenging to see how Luke would play a part.
I think Luke Combs has set the bar on how to respectfully cover a song and artist. you can tell he genuinely loves Tracy and is so stoked to be up there. I love how he didn't want to change anything not even the pronouns, because he wanted to keep the essence of Tracy's song, bravo👏🏻
He took a lot of pain for singing it in the first place. Because he’s white.🤷🏻
Equally excited tracy is smileing the whole time!!! 😎
@@craigcapps7072 I know, her dimple said everything.
Why would he change the pronouns?
😊😊
Tracy is 59 and sounds better than ever. This is 6 minutes of musical heaven. Thank you Tracy and Luke.
And no in-ear monitor either. Just straight up trust in herself after 36 years.
I Totally Agree. Tracy is STILL BEAUTIFUL! I love this song! ❤️🔥🙋🏾♀️
Sooo beautiful, so real, best memories with this Song, good to see young people singing along too!!!
Tracy was and still is so gorgeous. I’m watching this with tears in my eyes. I’m 33 and my dad used to sing this song to me when I was a child, I grew up on great music because of him, he was a reggae musician. He died 2020 and when I listen to artist like Tracy Chapman, Aretha Franklin and Chakka Khan, I can’t help but cry at the nostalgia and the memories of my father. Great performance.
Imagine you are 24 years old and you write a coming of age song. 35 years later, your hair is turning a beautiful gray and you get to sing again in front of an audience that remembers and respects you.
Tracy Chapman took her Fast Car and truly became someone.❤️
Luke and Tracy Wow, amazing 🎉🎉🎉
She has always been someone.
Best comment
Absolutely true
Props to Luke for reigniting this classic
Tracy was so joyful ❤❤❤❤
Perhaps another way of looking at this is... this experience is something many around the country go through.
Best Grammy performance I've ever seen in my 66 years. She is so beautiful.
Wow Tracy didn't age all these years later. Just the gray hair. Still sounds Great. Beautiful performance 😊
trouble is she did not follow-up...a 1 album 1 hit wonder@@ShugerPlum0263
She’s absolutely beautiful!! Have always loved her, my daughter cried when she saw this performance (41 yrs old) said it took her back to being a kid & all the feels💞💞💞💞💞
Agree 65yrs and this is what a award show preformince should be❤
Absolutely!❤
No pyrotechnics, no girls in panties, no flashy performance just pure music. This is the Grammy I used to remember.
agree!
Yes
But where’s Justin bieber looking stunned???
I agree 💯 with you. Real music with none of the 💩 you hear nowadays.
❤
You can see that Luke Combs has full of admiration to Tracy Chapman..Singing Tracy's song which put him on charts and singing next to her on stage is GOLD..Best Grammy Perfomance i have ever seen in 50 years👏👏👏
This performance was worth a Grammy...
She won 3 Grammy 's for the song when she initially released it.
I completely disagree, there was very little soul in the performance.
@@lilalfredo8544troll much
@@lilalfredo8544why? do u there should be crazy lights for this performance? I think the lights for this preformande are great
This song was well done. No doubt about it. Luke combs voice complemented Tracy’s
My POV. This is one of the best songs ever written. Tracy still has her voice and she looks beautiful.
was thinking the same thing
I agree and I say this realizing it’s not even my favorite Chapman song. The Promise holds that spot
One of many of her best songs.
I would completely agree
She blows me away -- just like she did when the song was first released. Oh man -- the good memories it brings back. By 1988 it had been so long since I'd heard legit folk rock I just had to find "Fast Car;" never heard of Tracy Chapman until that moment. I was just blown. a. way.
Beautiful. He honored her song. Respected her song writing. Paid homage to her. ❤
Both sing gorgeously. The song was recorded gorgeously. The band played gorgeously, sparse and beautiful.
However, her voice is outstanding, warm, beautiful, lush, smooth ... more please!
She is the most humble artist I’ve ever met. She lives in half moon bay and shops at the local hardware store. I met her and it was the quietest interaction. I knew it was her ! It took everything in me not to scream like a little girl (45 yo). I asked for her rewards number and boom Tracy Chapman. I simply said it’s a pleasure to meet you . Your music is everything thing to me. She smiled said thank you very sweetly and continued with her day. 😊
❤
She seems sweet and humble. I bet she's very wise too. I would love to sit down with her and just talk. ❤️ I don't really get out of sorts over famous people, but a kind smile and wisdom draws me in.
Great story. I live an hour away and go there sometimes. It'd be a dream to meet her.
CAUSE SHE'S A FUCKING ONE HIT WONDER AND THAT ONE HIT SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKEEEEEDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
@@recoswellwe are all waiting to hear your one hit. Let us know when it's ready. Also, it seems you forgot about "Give Me One Reason".
It was too beautiful! So beautiful and mature. The gray in the dreads. A lady, owner of her music. No pyrotechnics. Your voice and your guitar. There is a lot of beauty in simplicity.
Yesssss. All of this. ❤
Only if you actually have talent
Ooooh right! Just an incredible performance.
And she’s exceptionally beautiful
@@kikiboharris1010 👏❤
Love seeing the smiles on each of their faces as they sing together.
You can see in her eyes and smile how genuinely happy she is and thankful to Luke for showing her the respect and love. Great job guys…❤❤❤❤!
why should she rely on his respect... she's the only one who i've heard of ... sounds like she was giving him a break.
Negativity missed the point
@@p.janemaxwell632you must be a lot of fun at parties, betty buzzkill
No they both were giving respect he helped her she helped him so don't even plat that shit@@p.janemaxwell632
The way he is actually fan-boying is awesome. Also, she actually aged like wine. I seriously think she looks the best she ever has!!
He is actually an extreme Fanboy! Thinks she is fabulous in every way... Quiet the gentleman he was raised and I'm glad he showed her the respect he most definitely holds for her. 💜
Amen!
She's gorgeous!
The song is 36 years old. She looks 36 herself at most lol
Tracy Chapman is beautiful I mean her beauty really showned through, she aged soo beautifully and she looks soooo happy! ❤❤
My favorite part of this performance is the respect both artists show each other. But Tracy’s natural beauty, dimples and beautiful smile and overall humbleness is amazing. No flashy outfits, dancers and distractions just talent.
She’s so beautiful, and so talented
Ataahua ( beautiful )our Tracey C❤
@@TheDogGoesWoof69 I grew up listening to this song and always thought the meaning (for me) was a person trying to escape poverty or a bad situation and make a life a good life. As an adult who has been through a lot now I interpret it more of a dream of escape but reality and expectations kept them from living out those dreams or at least as well as they wished for.
I agree ❤
Sábias palavras .. uma música é muita história juntos .. emocionante ❤❤
Songs like these make me thankful for being a human.
Truly love the happiness and smile on Tracy's face when the cheering began. Loved this song as a teen and loved hearing it as an adult. I hope the next time this is covered the artist is as respectful as Luke.
The absolute respect he gives to her is amazing
I could watch this all day
I agree, the amount of respect he has for & shows her is truly amazing & the beautiful ear to ear smile on her face is also amazing.!

He knows morality and respect to everyone untill provoked otherwise.
This absolute vocalist has came out of live performances retirement to sing with luke because she has seen how much this song means and the absolute respect he gives the song.
This song means the world to both artists and thats what this should be about, not a pay cheque .
Music is love 🫶❤️
I cannot watch this too many times. The pure joy on Luke's face and Tracy's beautiful smile. This is pure magic! One of the best Grammy performances I have ever seen.❤
I watching over and over again….❤❤❤❤

You could just tell that Combs felt _honored_ to share this duet with her. Sorta giddy and almost in over his head. He reveres Tracy Chapman, you can just sense it.
Yes, “Indeed.”
Just like her original version, this performance will be timeless.
This is one of the best performances I’ve ever seen. No fuss or theatrics. It’s just about the music. What a treat it would have been to be in that room and experience this in person.
What an honor to sing with Tracy Chapman. I wish so much that she would return to the stage. She is amazing
Luke Combs is the f'ing man & such a gentleman. You can tell by his body language that this was ALL ABOUT Tracy Chapman. Luke Combs, thanks for passing on this beauty. I know you'll never read this, but I wish I could thank you in persona & hug you. You've just earned yourself a new fan, sir! Rock on!
Me too! His respect, humbleness, and his amazing taste in music has definitely made me start listening to more of his stuff. I hope he always stays as cool, sweet, and gentle as he seems to be.
Just the 'aw shucks' look everytime they made eye contact
@brennanwillisify yeah it was like she was just as stoked to perform with him as he was stoked performing with her
Easy…he’s good and give him some props.
I think Luke combs ruined it
The respect he showed her brought tears to my eyes. Beautiful!
well i've hearrd of her, but not him...

This performance touched my soul. The emotion in Tracy Chapman’s eyes shows how much this performance and ovation from the audience meant to her. And Luke Combs? Singing with his hero?!?!? He made my heart melt. So sweet.
I forgot how amazing this song is - especially listening (I mean REALLY listening) to the lyrics a few decades later? Hits deep in the heart.
Memories getting alive, what a beauty in respect and dignity about great music with the great "Tracy". Luke Combs thanks !! 1989, i did start a bike-trip with a friend. We did meet eachother in a coffeeshop in Amsterdam and in the first conversation we did speak to bike to PEKING (China). After this first conversation I did save money and bought the same bike as my friend for the sparparts. We had taped some music so we could listen cassettes. After our cassette Bob Marley with SURVIVAL was forbiden in Israel, we had only the tape left from TRACY CHAPMAN. Can you imagine 2 young women biking in the desert of Egypte and in the 9 mounths, we were there, we had only music from TRACY .........................
.Iám really happy ................the grammy's for Tracy and Luke..🌍

One of the best live Grammy performances in recent memory. The amount of respect he shows for her is just so admirable.
❤❤❤❤❤❤
Fantastic 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I tear up every time I watch it. Love seeing how Luke respects Tracy Chapman, the look on his face is totally, "I can't believe I'm here with her." Beautiful song, a beautiful performance. Tracy Chapman is a national treasure.
It's amazing
I've loved this song since it came out earlier days
I cry when I watch and listen to this too. I grew up listening to her with my mom and I wish my mom was alive to see this. They did an amazing job and mt heart warms every time I hear it❤
Tracy's voice still soft as satin yet strong as a mountain. She's the definition of humility and strength. Been loving her for over 40 years. Great job Tracy & Luke. Camera work was also excellent on their song. Best part of any Grammy show I've ever seen by a LONG shot.
The level of respect Luke shows to Tracy is admirable. Two humble, absolute amazing humans! Goodluck beating this performance.
Him fangirling throughout the whole song is a vibe lol
I am so blown away by this performance. Tracy looks (and sounds) absolutely beautiful. Hard to believe this song first came out when I was just 15 years old. My mom was an alcoholic, so the song really resonated with me.
My biological dad & my first step-dad, both raging alcoholics. I feel it. Life was f-ed up as a teenager. I can't say life is any easier in my mid-40s, but I keep grinding & hoping for that better life. Maybe someday I'll be blessed enough to have kids, I really hope so. 'Cause I wanna be there for them every step of the way. :-) Peace & Love be with you. 🙂
Age has agreed with Tracy so much she's even more beautiful now
Love to you
Same my dad is.. such a relatable song
@cynthiaturcotte9280❤
So happy Tracy is finally getting the recognition she deserves! Always loved this song.
I love how humbled she was when everyone cheered when she first came on. Big smile and sparkling eyes. You deserve all the respect to both of you. Beautiful performance! I play it over and over.
Love her beautiful smile… love how he was star struck by her presence. Beautiful song, love how he sang the words exactly as she wrote it. You’ve aged beautifully Miss Chapman🙏🏿
❤❤❤❤❤
Polly
Yeah, the smile, that warm smile she displayed the whole song, and you could tell Luke couldn't believe it himself that Tracy Chapman, was actually singing that song with him. And the audience was all jazzed singing along. That was a really special 6:00 minutes. And it's really rare when the stars are aligned & the elements are right for a song like that to come together like that & in that way. ❤️
jeans, a shirt, a guitar and a magnifect song. With two beautiful voices. Magical.
There's just something about her plain clothes, gray hair, glowing face, Tracy & Luke's beautiful smiles that blended wonderfully with the song. What a perfect moment in time! They are so real and authentic. Tracy is unscathed by the nonsense around her.
Luke admires this, and so do we all.
The way Tracy smiles at Luke is amazing. She is so proud and amazed that people love that song many years later
41 years old. In tears. Where have the years gone? Much respect to the artists.
I’m your elder by 30 years. I loved the song when it came out and still love it. The original had a guitar and a voice. That’s all the Grammy performance needed, times two.
I’m 37. I used to play her record on my mom’s record player in the 90s.
The best Grammy moment of all time.
Without a doubt 💯%
Outstanding We needed a magnificent performance
Close. Very, very good, but MJ Motown was better. Respectfully.
Eminem and Elton John performance was way more iconic.
@@jasonvirgilio119yeah a no way a Chomo was better. 🤡
Classic song with an immediately recognizable hook and I love how Lucas doesn’t in any way try to overshadow Tracy. Plus they harmonize so perfectly
Love her smile, voice and this has to be one of my favorites. I was 19 when it came out and now 55😂😢.
I love the beginning and how Tracy gets tears in her eyes after the crowd roared. She so deserves the recognition. Amazing song! Loves both versions!
Omg I didn’t notice that but went back and now I feel like I’m holding back tears because how heartwarming and beautiful.
Es hermosa verla
the way he didn’t overshadow her, admire her thru the whole song ❤ what an honor 😭 this whole thing is just beautiful
She is just luminous. Her voice is the most honest instrument I have ever heard. I admire completely Luke’s respect for her, it was overwhelming. You KNOW this is probably the highlight of his career in his own eyes. He may sell ten jillion albums, but he will always remember most- he was blessed to share the stage with Tracy Chapman.
Tracy Chapman is still as beautiful as back then..this song brings back so many memories of my youth...now 71....times sure flys by fast and you can't stop it no matter how much you try...they both sung it so beautiful together 😊
I think tracy Chapman is one of the most beautiful human beings to ever exist!!

One of the best songs ever written…. Timeless
100 percent agree...iconic...in my generation anyway...One of the BEST songs ever written
Yes 100%
Yeah, its upp there with Tears in heaven
This is sheer talent. One is a legend and the other kills it with his voice and his sense of respect. BOTH ARE AMAZING.
I am 51 years old and may be my favorite song all time!
Haven't seen two people that loved singing together as much as those two did for this performance.
Makes me cry every time😢
I'm just chilling at my local watering hole and I'm in tears right now, just balling like a baby. This is beyond words. The power & magic of music is something else, yall. I hope this is reaching someone right now and pulling them back from the darkness. Peace & Love, yall!
Watering hole... What in the world
Her smile at the beginning is the most humble proud smile that makes me happy to be alive. Thank you God for these moments
Please make this as a single! Perfection! I just love everything about it and please keep in the audience reaction and cheers in. So wholesome and pure class. Perfection!
She has a gorgeous smile, flawless skin, and a voice that’s still incredible!!!! Tracy and Luke’s voices were a perfect pitch and harmony!!!! Love them both together!!!! 🩷🎸🎼🎻
Hands down best performance EVER at the Grammys....elegant and simple. Only about the integrity of the music 🎶 ❤
AGREED. 100%.
This was a great song when it was released. Watching Tracy do it again and get recognition for it is incredible. I love this song. Much love to you Tracy. Thank you.
Omg words cannot describe how I felt when I saw this amazing performance by 2 fantastic artists 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Me too, i spent so may Tuesdays at the pub at Tufts listening to her and everyone saying she was going to be huge….I consider myself lucky
The crowd couldn't stop screaming...so much euphoria. We love you Tracy Chapman!
❤❤❤
I couldn’t keep from screaming at home! ♥️
I have such a huge passion for this woman. How can she be so beautiful and so simple at the same time, in her face you can't see vanity but she can be so beautiful, so wonderful, she has always been very beautiful. I love Tracy Chapman
Tracy Chapman is a master class on song writing and performance. She has the same lovely impact on me that she had 36 years ago when I first saw her perform. She is timeless and still has that wonderful peaceful expressive face that puts me at rest. Just as much of a fan now as I was then and still play her music on my play lists. Thank you, Tracy. I'm so glad younger generations are getting to discover her.
It's so cute how Luke mouths the words when Tracy's singing
I love it
Look at how much admiration Luke has towards Tracy...Wow!! This song is so beautiful!
This song really got in my loins. I love Tracy's sweet smile.
I don't often watch live performances on repeat, but man this performance, I could watch forever on a loop and still smile and never get tired of it. I have never heard a single person make a poor remark about this performance. It was as if the world came together for 6 minutes in harmony for these two incredible individuals. It really was so beautiful.
I'm 59 and still love Fast Car by Tracy Chapman since it first came out in 88
Im 59 too and remember her singing ,loved her voice , wondered what became of her , butI I was glad to see her lovely dimples and her simple outfit holding that guitar again❤❤
I was 59 last week and also remember this the first time round. I had the album on vinyl and am welling up watching this.

When I heard his cover on the radio, I loved how well it suited his voice, how he never changed a breath of the song. Rarely do I like covers, but he did such a good job, you could really tell he felt the song the same way she did. Hearing them sing together.....just wow. Their voices go so well together, and he was so respectful of her, and she sounds even better now, which I didn't think possible. I'm so glad I got to hear them sing this together.
Absolutely 💯, there's only a few artists that can do justice, for an original song 🎶🎵.
Tracy Chapman : Fast Car ...
Luke Combs.
Joni Mitchell : Help Me ....
Wynonna Judd .
Phoebe Snow : Poetry Man...
Queen Latifah.
Chaka Khan: I'm Every Woman...
Whitney Houston.
This is is one of the most beautiful songs of all times. Hands down. This collaboration is top tier.
Excellent! Tracy Chapman sounds as good live now, as she did on the studio version 36 years ago ! Outstanding performance. Violins give it a very nice touch !
This was a once in a lifetime performance. Kudos to Luke for giving Tracey the respect she deserves. I cannot get enough of this performance.
Tracy Chapman, Bruce Springsteen, Peter Gabriel, Sting, all together. The first concert of my life in 1989. I was 14 years old and I still remember it as if it was yesterday. This young guy is talented and worthy of covering this gem of a song. And as duet they look and sound on stage like they are spirit bonded. Cheers from Athens-Greece.
OMG! I saw them ALL at the Human Rights Now performance they did at JFK stadium in Pennsylvania. Amazing!
The audience going crazy with the opening riff before she even sings one word speaks volumes! Tracy is one of my all time favorite artists and it made my heart swell to see her looking so radiant, the smile that came when the audience cheered in the opening, her cute dimples. I wasn't even going to watch the Grammys as the pace is so slow~UNTIL I learned in advance that she and Luke were performing. I was ALL IN!
I am crying now remembering the summer listening to this song in a old borrowed car driving with its windows opened, no ac, and hoping that a part of my life I hated would blow away during this journey. Chapman is a brilliant and eloquent artist. And Luke, you helped this woman return for a moment to us all. thank you.
This is excellence of the highest level. Not one performer at the Grammys topped this song or performance. A ton of class and talent.
One day when Tracy Chapman is long gone…THIS SONG will live on forever…in the hearts and memories of all those it has touched…and all those it is yet to touch. Truly, truly timeless.
Ladies and Gentlemen; THAT is Tracy Chapman. As wonderful as when her song first came out. I've been sort of growly about Combs singing it because she did such incredible job, but I will cut him a break for treating her as respectfully as he did. Just love, love, love her smokey voice and haunting lyrics.
This is one of those rare and perfect songs, when melody, lyrics and voice combine in perfection. Great version.
I've been a big fan of Tracy Chapman's since the 80s, and now I'm a big fan of Luke Combs! Watching him star struck is just incredible and these two produced some magic.
Special props to Luke for keeping the gendered lyrics in the official video on his cover too!!
I fell in love with Tracy when I was still a teenager, now at 45 I realized that I'm madly in love with her again. I love you Tracy Chapman
Me 2. I am 51 and I'm with you

I'm 42 and as a kid growing up in the 80s, this song was frequently on the radio! Still love it!

Such a beautiful performance by two beautiful people. It truly brings tears to my eyes.
What a natural beauty with a beautiful voice.
Tracy Chapman has an absolutely true voice.
She is undoubtedly one of the greatest poets of our generations
Awesome performance, what a gr8 pair, he was in awe of her and she was getting love from EVERYONE there!! Beautiful!!!
One of the best covers/duets, he has so much respect for her. I was lucky enough to see her live in a small venue almost 20 years ago when telling stories came out.
She has such a soft speaking voice for such a strong singing voice.
The saddest part was listening to people yelling at her to stop talking and sing.
I have so much respect for her as an artist, woman, person, story teller ❤
"Fast Car" is a timeless classic.

I love that Luke is fanning out. Those cute little smiles when he looks over at her. 😊
This was so special to watch. I still play Tracy's album often. Her songs never date & she still has her amazing vocals! Tracy, you will always be a star! Thank you for your exceptional music. You wake up the universe when you sing! Blessings to you! 😊❤
I played this album to my baby boy with he was born too early at 34 weeks. I especially played The Promise, because I was promising him one day I would take him home with me, and that I’d always come back to him each day. He is 3 now 🥹
