I saw her in 87 when I attended a March on Washington about poverty. I've been enamored ever since. She is a beautiful soul who tells the story of those who have been discounted in our society like no one else. She never received the recognition she deserved.

i saw her in this era, and it was amazing. she had basically zero polish, or stage presence. It was just a girl and her guitar, and it was powerful.

30/12/22 When I first met the young man who would become my husband (32 years ago ) he played his favourite artist Tracey Chapman to me …. He died in July this year and since then whenever I play her music especially The Promise and Stand by Me I feel my beautiful husband’s spirit responding to my soul ♥️her singing brings him instantly into being ❤

She opened for a great 10000 Maniacs show in this time -1988. I was floored and so was most of the audience - goosebumps, shivers and tears. Raw. Barefoot. Alone on stage. Guitar and microphone. Jeans and black t shirt. Powerful. Natalie Merchant and 10000 Maniacs were awesome, but eclipsed, at least for me.
I can tell by how quiet the audience is. That's powerful.

Every morning i wake up to Tracy strumming the opening of "if not now" as the alarm on my phone. Its taken me 33 years to realise, but just recently i have decided that Tracy is my all time favourite musical artist. The music i listen to is heavily influenced by what i heard growing up being played by my parents whilst i was growing up in the 90s: Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Simon and Garfunkel and of course Tracy Chapman as well as many others. I feel so musically privileged to have grown up with that as a background to what my peers and I were listening to in the 90s

I got to see her at the beginning of her career in 1988 or so. (around the front row, Garden State Arts Center, N.J. USA) She was almost frightened to be on such a big stage, (still fabulous), but by the time this video was made she had come to grips with her new position in life and owned this stage. Great recording. What a voice, what a talent. These songs are beautiful and just as relevant and important as ever. Thank you Tracy!

I went to see Dylan in Portland in fall 88 and TC opened. I had never heard of her. She blew me away totally.. She must have come closer to upstaging Dylan than anybody ever. That first album is just PERMANENT. This set is beautiful beyond words. The brilliance and power of naked soul. She's lucky to have been asked to participate in this wonderful concert, and they were / are lucky and blessed to have her join them. This was the very best of the Bridge Benefits. You have company in thinking it a peak, but there were reasons besides Tracy -- quite a few, in fact. But I love her smile as she's leaving the stage, to herself -- she knows she threw down all aces to start the evening and knows she gets to listen, relaxed, and enjoy the rest of the evening -- a benefit of opening. I never managed to make it to a Bridge Benefit -- a major flub. I hear there were a some in the early 90s also outstanding, and it sounds like Neil always did it up proper. @@jameshw9751
