This is a Motormouth couple car review of the Alfa Romeo Stelio Estrema luxury compact SUV. Sporty, athletic and dynamic, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio never disappoints!
The Alfa Romeo Stelvio has a 2L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with an 8-speed automatic transmission, 280 horsepower and 306 lb-ft of torque, standard AWD. It goes 0-100 km/h in 5.6 seconds and 0-60 in 5.5 seconds.
Premium fuel is required, you’ll get about 654 km/406 miles to every fill.
We have the limited edition Alfa Romeo Estrema model which builds on the premium Alfa Romeo Veloce trim but adds driving dynamic technology from the high performance Quadrifoglio model, including standard Alfa Active Suspension for sharper handling while maintaining a comfortable drive and a limited-slip rear differential which distributes torque and traction during acceleration. Surprisingly, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Estrema absorbs imperfections in the road very well, while staying true to its athletic and dynamic performance.
The DNA drive mode selector offers 3 modes, dynamic mode for more responsive driving, natural drive mode for a more comfortable suspension which is best suited for everyday commutes and advanced efficiency mode prioritizing fuel efficiency over performance.
The Alfa Romeo Estrema edition ups the sportiness with its striking exterior design, carbon fibre exterior mirrors and grille surround, LED headlights and taillights, 21” dark wheels with gloss black brake calipers and exclusive badging.
The Alfa Romeo Stelvio comes standard with an 8.8” touchscreen with navigation and Apple Carplay and Android Auto. The Estrema has sport leather trimmed seats, heated front seats, driver seat memory, a heated steering wheel, wireless charger, 14-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, heated rear seats, a dual-pane panoramic sunroof and a hands-free power tailgate. The Stelvio does not have ventilated front seats or a 360 camera.
Fuel economy is 10.8L/100 km, 22 MPG city and 8.3L/100 km highway, 28 MPG highway. The Stelvio can tow 3,000 pounds and Alfa Romeo offers a warranty of 4 years or 80,000 km/50,000 miles. In the US, complimentary maintenance is covered for 1 year or 10,000 miles.
The Stelvio starts at $59,190 CAD/$45,550 USD. The Estrema model is $70,490 CAD

I have the 2022 Stelvio Veloce. Easily the best Sporty SUV I’ve had. Previous vehicles I’ve owned are Audi Q5, Volvo XC40, Lexus RX and Acura Rdx. Nothing comes even close with how fun the Stelvio is to drive. Amazing handling and transmission.

I've owned two Alfas in my life and I loved both of them. My first was a 1978 Alfetta 2000 & my second was a 2002 147 Selespeed. There's just nothing like them. They have character and charm, they handle beautifully and sound great. They're not cars you just buy as transportation devices, they're all about putting a smile on your face every time you buy them. If you look after them, they love you back, if you just treat them like a utility device, they'll let you know they're not happy. There's just something about them that makes you love them. The Giulia and Stelvio were designed by Ferrari engineers when Alfa was still part of the Fiat Auto Group that included Maserati, but Ferrari has gone independent. The Ferrari DNA is still in each Alfa so it's no wonder they handle so well and look so good. The interiors are typical Italian, stylish. I actually love the classic round instruments, real buttons and switch gear, but they need to improve the resolution of their screens and the speed of their processors. Once you drive one, you'll understand why their owners love them so much.

Thanks for the reply. From what I am reading the Stelvio though is particularly stiff. The return for this is hard to match handling and driving dynamics. I have read though that it's different depending on the trim. The quad being the most aggressive. Was considering the Ti. I leased my Stelvio in November of 2019. We purchased it off of the lease in February of 2023. It has been absolutely bullet proof reliable and absolutely rattle and squeak free! Not a single issue since new. Only 1 factory recall for a re-flash of the PCM early in 2020. It has been back to the dealer for oil changes and tire rotations every 5,000 miles, not 10,000 per factory recommendation. This is a New England car with 30,000 New England miles, including winters. The Q4 system works flawlessly under winter conditions.
The reliability rap was caused by dealerships delivering cars (Guilias and Stelvios) early in 2017 and '18 with batteries that had not been charged since the car was built. This lead to all sorts of electronic woes and much owner consternation and bad owner ratings. It is a lively car with no vices and it makes you smile every time you drive it!!

If you are the Guy (or the girl/lady) at a dinner party that drives a Alfa Romeo Stelvio Estrema … you will get my attention. Zero Alfa Romeo purchases have ever been based on logic (for ‘that’ visit a Lexus dealership), but rather of passion. The people who don’t really care about the destination, but rather the drive to it. Great review! Thanks for the video.

I've had my Giulia for 3 years now and it's been more reliable than the 2014 Accord I had before it. Don't believe Consumer Reports - just browse any Alfa owner forums and you'll see the majority of owners have zero issues with these cars. Heck, even if I had to bring it back to the dealership once a quarter, it'd be worth it - they're just SO much fun to drive!!!

If you like the drive on that drive - step into the Guilia - I picked one up in September (the Speciale in Montreal Verde). It is one of the best cars I have ever driven - and if you're worried about reliability don't be. They are no worse than the average vehicle and you get treated like royalty at the dealership. Great fun and comfortable.

  • @miks564
    @miks564 Před rokem +14

I've a Veloce with black on black (Nero Edizione) with 20" wheels. Very similar to that Estrema.
As for the interior space and luggage space, it's basically on par with the X4 and GLC Coupe, above the Macan and the XC60 from Volvo. The X3 and Q5 mentioned offer 4% more luggage space. In my opinion, not such a big of a difference. It has the same exterior dimensions of its competitors after all.
The interior might be a bit tighter, because the engine is pushed back behind the front axle to keep the weight distribution near 50%/50% as required by those like me who love how it handles.
The Infotainment it's not lagy, just its touch sensor. Using the dials, it's fast. But I agree it's not the best and the rear camera is almost useless.
One common thing we see in reviews like this, is the people smiling while driving it. ...it's true every single day I use it. It's a joy to drive. It offers a very quiet and comfort ride ...or a very naughty one when in dynamic mode using the gears in manual.
The Stelvio is clearly a SUV for those who enjoy driving.
As for reliability, mine is almost 2 years old. Zero problems as expected. Italian cars are very unreliable in particular for those who never owned one. :)

And like you mentioned, it can be very docile or it can be a naughty beast. One of the few SUVs that adapt to your driving mood. lol

Save $$$ on microprocessors and just give me easy to use buttons, toggle switches and knobs - replace the screen with a nice Kenwood head unit. No grazi on the power seats either. And charge me a starting right at 40k. It would be more timeless.

For the Stelveo, you’re satisfied with this 4-cylinder’s power such that you’re not tempted to shell out the extra cash to move up in displacement (and sound)?

They got rid of the gorgeous Crema coloured interior in 2021 and now they’ve 86ed the awesome red leather! Why oh why would they do this when all their competitors offer at least one alternative interior colour!!!

I really don't like the high tech, multiple screens, and touchscreen systems which make you have to search through layers of windows to operate simple things. Reliability on the early models was almost always electrical issue... due to the original Alfa battery being too small and therefore weak (to fit the space saver wheel over the top, in the boot). But upgrade batteries fixed that. And the issue was fixed in MY20 models and onwards.
Otherwise owners report them as being very reliable.
I've just changed my Audi Q5 (Gen 1, 2016) for a Stelvio 280bhp 2020 model. And the Stelvio out-handles and out classes the Q5 in performance easily.
The rear seat leg room is also very comparable. There's certainly not 7' of extra leg room in the Audi, as this review claims.

I agree. Alfa did some quality ussue updates in 2020, and all Stelvios since then get practically no complaints. That's why it's JD Powers #1 in Customer Satisfaction.

When it comes to driving engagement, nothing brings the child out of you more than the Alfa, particularly the Quadrifoglio trim. Absolutely wild! That being said, it's best served as a toy because as a daily some of the missing features and the perceived quality, granted it's purposely designed to be light and sporty more than a luxury product, will eventually catch up when sitting in traffic. I suppose Angela and Zach will be okay having a Macan GTS as daily, and a Stelvio/Giulia Quad for weekend right? 😄

It's basically a Stelvio with more space in the rear (it uses the same Giorgio platform as the Stelvio and Giulia), a state of the art infotainment system and an even more luxurious interior. I'd love Motormouth to do a review on the Grecale too - I'm sure they'd love it! :)

@@MT-xl8jy When you drive it, the Macan handles much better than its brother Q5, but it's at best, similar to the Stelvio.
Despite being built over a more 'common' MLB platform (95B variant), the Macan is still very agile and fun to drive. I give you that. I suppose the main reasons, are the light aluminum engine and its position in the engine bay coupled with a good suspension.
The engine on the base Macan however is not as powerful as the engine on the Stelvio and it doesn't give me much confidence due to the history of known problems with this 2.0 TFSI block.
The Macan is also heavier because besides the aluminum engine (mounted behind the front axle), the Stelvio also brings aluminum suspension, a very light and compact ZF8HP torque converter gearbox that loses less than 0.1s in shift speed compared to the heavier dual clutch pdk. Most of the Stelvio body is also made of aluminum and it even offers standard a carbon fiber drive shaft. With a 50%/50% weight distribution offered by the Giorgio platform designed (by Ex-Ferrari engineers) for the launch of the Giulia Quadrifoglio, the Stelvio handling also greatly benefits from a very direct Ackerman geometry steering. It has even a higher ratio than a 911.

I have one and it's been very reliable, BUT you should always be within driving distance of your dealer, and make sure it's a good dealer (they're not all). And if you're out of warantee, no probs, just make sure you are near a reputable shop that you trust. These are no different than any other European car. Better than BMWs I'm told which are not that reliable on the stuff that counts (not those silly 1st year reliability surveys where Alfa doesn't do well, due to small and easily serviced items like bad batteries). On the stuff like drive train, Alfa is bullet proof.
