    This is a neat hack if you are on a tight budget and reliability isn't a big concern, like if you just want to record your cats playing with each other or something. If your NVR system is playing a more critical role then it is highly recommended that you use a SURVEILLANCE GRADE hard drive due to the 100% read/write duty cycle of 24/7 video recording. Standard hard drives just won't hold up to this kind of usage over time. With regards to maximum size, the Swann documentation for my 8580 says 6TB max. Sometimes that is simply because that was the biggest drive available when the documentation was written, other times that was what the BIOS could support at the time (and may have been updated since), and in other situations that is a hard limit and there isn't anything you can do about it. I am about to install a 14TB Western Digital Surveillance drive into my NVR-8580. I will let you know if it works.

      Hi J N, thanks for the great comment. I realised the drive wasn't a surveillance drive but have used them in the past with good results so I thought I try it again and so far so good. But you have a very good point. I would be interested in how you get on with the larger drive as this is something I might like to try. If you have success in using the larger drive I would be grateful if could let me know the revision of the bios on your system at the time of the upgrade. Thanks again and for watching 👍🏽

      Did it work? I'm considering putting a 16TB Seagate Skyhawk AI in my 8580. I opened mine up and it has a 2TB Seagate. I'm hoping it will recognize a 16 TB.

      When I opened up my NVR I was surprised to find the hookups for a second SATA drive. I added the 14tb drive instead of replacing the 2tb. When I fired it up, my NVR recognized it as a 14tb drive. I formatted it, and it has been running smooth so far.

      @@jnrth12 You must not have an 8 Channel Swann NVR-8580. Mine only has one hookup. That's strange.

    Hello Mike, I have the same 4k Swann CCTV as yours. What have you configured your settings to in order to get the best picture? All the cars driving past my home are not very clear and the number plates are unreadable when viewing back the past days' recordings on the CCTV system (without being exported to an external USB)?

      Hi KB, take a look at the link to my Google drive. This is my setup for recording. drive.google.com/drive/folders/1hr3iVwGfA_0mjWGqthN213XJj76KuhpN?usp=sharing
      They are just about max'd out. One thing to remember is when you watch anything back there is another setup for the display you are using. Mine is set to 1080 but would be improved if I had a 4k monitor. Looking at car reg's is alway a tad challenging particularly if they are moving. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching 👍🏽

    Good video... but where can you get power for the hard drive 6tb when is installed on the unit

      Hi Manuel, I swapped out the original drive for the 6TB one so used the same data and power cable that was already fitted, thanks for watching 👍🏽

    hve you had any luck fitting an SSD into a Swann?

    • @MikeMakesIt
      @MikeMakesIt  Před 2 měsíci

      Hi Marty, no I’ve not tried one but it should work. However I don’t believe an ssd is best suited due to its limited (relatively) read/write life over mechanical drives and also the cost.

      That's possible, I do have an old system lying around so could try an SSD in that but it won't be for a couple of weeks but will report back here when I do with the results.

    • @MikeMakesIt
      @MikeMakesIt  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Manuel, I fitted a 6tb drive (as Swann said it was the largest one that could be fitted) and it worked fine. I'm told larger drives can also be fitted but I've not tried that as 6TB is enough for me, I hope that helps 👍🏽

      @@MikeMakesIt oh ok and the 9 days you said is recording 24 hrs 4k the 8 cameras? And then start over to record...how can record at least a month?

    • @MikeMakesIt
      @MikeMakesIt  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi, I believe other people have fitted a larger drive which would allow a longer recording time before the data is over written. If you used less cameras or a lower resolution or only had the cameras record when they saw motion (PIR setup in the software) then you would be able to get a longer recording time.

      Hi Manuel. I'm not sure about the brand but I would have thought any SATA drive would be fine so long as it isn't too big (6gig in my case) Here is a link to the drive I fitted and that works www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B077RV4ZLY
