That was the thing I did not like about Havana. You can't walk ten feet without someone trying to hustle you. And yes, almost every transaction you make they try to rip you off. I have heard rumors that tourism has been dropping in Cuba within the past couple of years. I do believe it's partially due to this. They're becoming more aggressive with tourists concerning money, etc. They have grown to take the tourism for granted. That's why Kurt, if he ever returns, should go more to the west coast of Cuba. People there are more polite and will not try to rip you off like in the huge tourist locations. The thing that baffles me is that their government permits this behavior. Yet if a Cuban is seen with a tourist in the wrong place at the wrong time they could go to jail. And yes, that still happens nowadays. It may not be as severe as in the past but it can still happen. Cuba is a grey zone when it concerns local laws, etc. And for people saying that it's okay for them to rip tourists off, you have to understand that not all Cubans are poor. Many Cubans make a really good living off tourists. Don't look at the infrastructure. Of course it's old. Look at how some of them are dressed. That should give you an indication on how well they are doing for themselves, if you know how things role in that country. No two Cubans live the same quality of life. And most people don't understand how the embargos function. There are actually 2 embargos on Cuba btw. And those embargos ban US companies from doing business with Cuba. It has no effect of businesses located within other countries. So don't fall for the, 'We can't get stuff here because of the embargos." That's not totally true. And another scam you need to watch for, "It's my birthday." If you are told this by a local it's probably a scam to make you feel sorry for them and to give them money or a material good. Despite all of this, there are still many Cubans who are good, hardworking and honest people.
Is mostly in Old Havana, or the center of towns. People are very genuine and friendly in the outer neighborhoods of Havana. I haven't been to the East part of the Island but agree about the western part, except again in the very center of Pinar del Rio, lots of cigar scammers. The tourism levels also really dropped since the Trump administration.
Yup so sad. Cuba is also becoming dangerous. That's what happens when hunger and necessity surpasses everything else. The people are desperate and can't take much more. So sad to see my beautiful country become dangerous and watch my people become more and more corrupt.

@@BenEncounters Tourism probably suffered due to Covid, like all over the world.
Yup so sad. Cuba is also becoming dangerous. That's what happens when hunger and necessity surpasses everything else. The people are desperate and can't take much more. So sad to see my beautiful country become dangerous and watch my people become more and more corrupt.

Solo Havana isn't hard. You gotta know how to not get into situations. Go 3 times and don't stay at a resort and you will learn quick.
the trick is to be aware of the fact that your white face looks like a bag of money and if you speak local then you can easily turn almost any situation around and instead of them sucking out money from you you make new friends and get any kind of help you require. gotta be assertive

So glad I’m bilingual, speak both English and Spanish, and since Kurt mostly has been in Spanish speaking countries, and since he explains all the things in his videos in English, I am on here for it… although, there’s some South American countries where I don’t even understand what is is that they’re saying sometimes, either due to the accent, or the slangs from that specific country, but I’m learning new slangs too as a result.
Same here. Kurt was an inspiration for me to start learning español

It turns out that he loaded the plane with a bladder full of gas(secretly), took off from Cuba with just a liquid compass(like you’d see on an older car’s dashboard), flew just above the ocean waves to avoid detection from the Cuban military fighters and made it to Navy Key West (Boca Chica Key) looking for asylum. I can see why the flee from your videos. Stay safe, brother and safe travels!
