NH3 is not only an inhalation hazard, but at ph13 a severe burn hazard if spilled on the skin. It not only will burn the skin but continue to eat its way down toward the muscles until it becomes neutralized. Young man I farmed with spent a month in a burn unit after failing to depressurize the cold flow unit before attempting to repair it. It missed his face, got his left side ear ,neck and arm. Needed some skin grafting but they couldn't do it until they were sure it didn't get down to the muscle. The story of getting the burnt skin scraped off (called debrieding) is the stuff of nightmares. Incredible pain. Got away with some lung damage and a lot of scars and is actively farming. We both hire NH3 done now. One mistake was one too many.

That's why they always had a water tank on the side of the anti hydrous wagon to wash your skin off right away

@@duanebolen543 Its not enough when you get that much. 4" service cover blew off with 150 + psi behind it. Fortunately he was with another guy who after they emptied the water on the tank, got him to the yard and under a hydrant until the ambulance got there. Ambulance driver was given wrong directions, but he worked at the co_op and knew who was applying out that way and got there fast or it could have been a lot worse. He could barely breathe at all.

@@joemac3118 I always wore gloves, goggles, respirator and a protective jacket when changing tanks. Really sucked when sidedressing when it was hot out. Only incident I ever had was a hose got ripped off the tank when the hitch pin broke while applying, but that was just a matter of circle back behind the tank and turn it off . 99.9% of the time there's no problems, but people make mistakes or equipment fails.

    Hi Emma..
Anhydrous ammonia is certainly dangerous, but it is an excellent fertilizer.
With due precautions and the right equipment, the work remains top, in the video there is no shortage of one or the other..💪🏻💪🏻

54 openers at 12" spacing would be a 54' wide air drill. Yes, outside opener to outside opener would only be 53', but once you turn around and make a second pass, you leave 12" between the first pass and the second pass your making, meaning it's 54' wide. So either it's only 53' wide with 53 openers on 12" spacing, or it's 54' with 54 openers on 12" spacing.
It's the same thing with any planter. An 8 row, 30" planter is considered 20' wide, even though outside row to outside row is only 17.5', because you take into account the idea that each pass is another 30" away from the previous path.

@@glennspreeman1634 I truly have no idea and am not trying to criticize, but it would be really interesting to see the ROI and business case of a small Amish farm with little to no equipment and fuel cost upside these multimillion dollar operations. I'm guessing the balance sheet with equipment and thousands of acres of land is more wealthy, but does the simplicity (NOT to be confused with easy) of Amish life more enjoyable? Just thinking out loud.

Is the gas/chemicals put in the ground as a liquid or aerosol? I've seen it used for years but always wondered if it is a liquid when applied or if it's in a gasses form.
    Thanks Emma

Under pressure in the tank its a liquid at -27°F turns to vapor as it is injected into the ground and attaches to soil moisture.
