Why Smart People Overthink

  • Imagine your brain as a supercomputer that's always on, constantly analyzing, planning, and simulating every possible scenario before making a decision. This is everyday reality for those blessed with higher intelligence. Ever stood at the grocery store, staring at 50 types of cereal, frozen in indecision, and thought, "Why can't I just pick one and move on with my life?" Well, you're not alone. It’s a common issue among every smart person you know.
In this video, we'll dive into why this happens and share some easy tips to help you stop overthinking and start doing.
Consider the last time you tried to pick a movie on Netflix. With thousands of options, you might end up so overwhelmed that you just give up and re-watch "The Office" for the seventeenth time. This phenomenon called "paradox of choice," hits smart people like a truck. They don’t just see choices; they see a sprawling map of possibilities and consequences, making choosing feel like trying to solve a Rubik’s Cube while blindfolded.
Research shows that people with higher intelligence often have busier brains, particularly in the prefrontal cortex. This part of the brain deals with complex thinking and decision-making. Because it's so active, it makes them extremely aware of every possible outcome of their decisions, even the minor ones.
For example, when faced with a decision, smarter folks tend to come up with a bunch of options and even options within those options. You might think having a lot of choices is a good thing, but it actually makes deciding way harder. Imagine trying to pick a snack at a huge buffet where everything looks good-it's overwhelming! This overload of choices can wear them out and make even small decisions seem like big deals.
Picture this: you're in a giant clothing store, surrounded by racks of jeans, shirts, jackets, and more. Sounds like a shopper's paradise, right? But if you're an overthinker, it’s more like a shopper's puzzle.
First, there's the style decision: skinny jeans scream trendy but are practically a yoga workout to put on. Straight-leg might be more comfortable but does wearing them mean you're basically giving up on fashion?
By the time you’ve overanalyzed every angle, you're so exhausted that you might just walk out with a pair of sweatpants. They match everything, require zero thought, and hey, they are super comfy, right?
This is the kind of mental gymnastics routine that smart people go through all the time.
Now, let's do a quick exercise. Ready? Hit that subscribe button without overthinking it for even a second-just a simple click. There, you've just practiced making a swift decision!
Smart people are very self-aware. They don't just think about what happens right after making a decision; they think about how it will affect them and others down the road. They're playing a mental game of chess, trying to predict moves far in advance. This means even simple decisions can feel like running a marathon in their heads.
Say there’s a party you’re thinking about going to. For most, the decision might simply hinge on whether they feel like going out or not. But a highly intelligent person would weigh tons of factors: the benefit of meeting new people versus the energy it takes to socialize, how going to the party might stop them from working on a personal project, or how the dynamics at the party could help their networking opportunities.

A trully smart person knows what they plan to buy before going to the grocery store and knows themselves well enough to plan around indecision.

There is a level above this intelligence where we just plan in the head that i will ask for a particular dish when i visit a new restaurant so that i dont have to waste time on thinking what to choose 😂

I've found that you have to realize what is important and what is not as important. This way you can save your overthinking for what is important. Deciding what clothes to buy? Just buy something cheap that looks reasonable. The money you save can be put to better use elsewhere. Also, I've learned that many areas of life just perform better when I don't overanalyze it. That's difficult to do in practice, but optimal for the best success.

    The f??? 😂😂😂
No, seeing choices within choices doesn't cause analysis paralysis. A smart person sees the outcome as well and immediately knows which choice is better.
Are there no more smart videos on yt??? Maybe this isn't about the smart at all, but about those who think they're smart.
