Excellent work! How will you get the entire surface flat? Do you have a belt sander that wide? I recall seeing a plan for a 1/2 VW where a mandrel (basically a bar of round stock the diameter of the main bearings) was clamped between the case halves and then it was face cut on a lathe with a large enough swing. I can't wait to see your next video.

I should be able to use the belt sander. It's not big enough to cover the entire surface at once but it can catch 2 sides at the same time. I should be able to rotate it with gentle pressure and get it all flat. It will be easy to tell if it's good enough when I start bolting the backing plate on. Face cutting it on the lathe sounds like a good plan B. I have to turn some bar stock to fit in the main bearings anyway. Those are used as a guide to accurately drill the back plate for installing the magneto.

Really good stuff! I like the creativity that it took to make it a success. I have a similar project coming up that requires welding a mag case. Did you pre or post welding heat the case pieces? I am concerned about distortion for my case. Did you clamp the case halves to a table during welding?

No pre or post heating was necessary and nothing ever tried to crack. Since I was using the TIG I just brought it up to the melting point just like aluminum then kept the shielding gas on it for several seconds as it cooled. I did not clamp anything down, just positioned it however needed to weld it. There was no distortion that I could see. The case halves meet up perfectly and the rear was machined flat.

@@xpsgarage Thanks for the details. That gives me some optimism as I have been hesitant to risk ruining an expensive piece of mag. Much appreciation and keep up the good work

@@user-eo2oh4hd9g Have you TIG welded aluminum before? If so the process is very similar you just have to use the correct filler rod for the magnesium. Most of the challenge was just the old nasty casting. As soon as I had some new material laid down it was easy.

@@xpsgarage I have some experience with TIG aluminum. I bought AZ92A filler rod for the Porsche mag case. For me I am just filling some pits near the boss area. Once it's machined the boss will be able to seal and not leak oil. Appreciate your looking out for me! Thanks again
