      I am coming to do the two years of MA in Interior Architecture, super excited for it!
      As for the questions, in general I am pretty clear on everything you have already covered. However, I would like to know, what about the work load during your MA studies and if you have opportunity to work part-time meanwhile as an international student? Also, if you could give any tips about building up a "good" study plan at Aalto, this would be very useful!

      Anyways, to your questions. I actually already have plans on talking more about working while studying in Finland. I was planning on shifting my focus more on career advice between September and October when the job hunting in Finland starts. Ive got a lot to say about this topic + a lot of tips on actually finding and scoring a job as a university student.
      About your work load during the MA studies in interior architecture - this is pretty hard for me to comment as this will most definitely differ from my business studies. A lot of people have been asking me to post videos where I talk about different programme studies at Aalto so im currently considering ways to invite people from different degrees to talk about their experiences. Would this be something you'd be interested in?
      The same goes to the study plan. I have some general advice that im sure can help you somewhat but those mostly concern the amount of courses and what kind of courses to take. However, im not that familiar with the curriculum of your degree so I don't really want to comment on it specifically.
      Its kind of frustrating how many topics there are to talk about that im not familiar enough with 😄. Nevertheless, keep the suggestions coming. I do write everything in a list from where I pick topics for future videos.

      Hey Acsah and sorry for the late response! Your comment was lost in the flood of comments that ive been receiving. Anyhow, heres my take on these topics:
      1. Yes BUT this is not recommended. Student apartments usually have long queues and if you apply for an apartment only after you arrive in the country you might have to wait for months or even over a year to get an apartment. My default recommendation is always to apply for an apartment as soon as you are allowed.

    Dear Oliver, thank you so much for these videos! You have no idea how helpful they were to me! You have answered almost all my questions, but I still have two more that I think you didn't mention. The first one is the application for student housing with a roommate. I don't know anyone there, so I wanted to find a person through HOAS application, but I am not sure how the process goes. Should I first complete general HOAS application or? Also, I know how much you emphasize that we should apply for an apartment as soon as possible, but my university will anounce the start day by the end of May. Is is too late then to book the apartment because the application requires the exact date? Thank you sooo muchhh!!!

      @RoadtoFinnish  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Anja! First of all, thank you for the positive feedback. That really means the world to me and it keeps me motivated to continue with these videos.
      *About finding a roommate*
      If ive understood correctly, you are supposed to first find a roommate and apply for an apartment together after that. However, I can look into this in a bit more detail and get back to you once ive confirmed the facts. Ive never looked into the Hoas Matchie service so this is totally new for me too 😀. Ill reach out to my contact at Hoas to get some more info.
      *When to apply*
      When you apply for a Hoas apartment, you do not need an exact date for the start of your studies but rather you need to know in which month the studies start. You can see this from 4:10 onwards. It is most normal that university semesters start at the end of August or the first week of September (assuming that you start your studies in the fall) so if I were you, id just use August as the month when you need your flat (see the application form). Ive mentioned this in a few videos now, but I recommend that you move into Finland at least a couple of weeks before your studies start because this will help you get orientated and you will have time to set all day-to-day stuff in order.
      I hope this answered your questions. Please let me know if I wasnt clear enough so that I can elaborate 👍

    Hi Oliver! Thank you for the video, it was very informative and useful.
    I have two questions about the apartments:
    1. What's the difference between a room in a shared apartment and a studio with a shared kitchen? Does the studio have an included bathroom, while the room doesn't?
    2. When applying for an apartment, do you recommend applying to a single organization (like just the HOAS), or to several (both AYY and HOAS at the same time)?

    • @RoadtoFinnish
      @RoadtoFinnish  Před 4 lety

      Hey and thanks for the great questions! Ill try to be as clear as possible:
      1) About the different apartments:
      →A room in a shared apartment is like a room in this video: czcams.com/video/SEfLOF2OwzI/video.html 👈 this specific apartment is for exchange students but the basic idea is the same: you have your own private and lockable room. Bathroom, kitchen, living room etc are shared with other people. Hoas has a lot of these apartments and almost every Hoas building has these shares room apartments.
      → A studio with a shared kitchen usually means that you share a large kitchen with the entire floor. These studios include a private bathroom. I actually lived in such a apartment for the first 2 years of my studies and its was great! However, Hoas has a very limited amount of these studios available and they are all located in the Hermanni-Sörnäinen and Jätkäsaari-Ruoholahti areas.
      2) About the different organisations:
      I would definitely apply for as many providers at the same time as possible. There are no restrictions on this and its just good sense to diversify your chances on getting an apartment. There are three things to take into account here:
      → Different organisations might have different application periods. E.g. as I mentioned in this video, you can apply for a Hoas apartment at earliest 4 months before you need to move in. With AYY, you can apply as soon as you've been admitted.
      → Different organisations have different queueing rules. Again, as mentioned here, Hoas does not have a number queue system while AYY uses one (at least the last time I was in their queue).
      → If you have an open application to multiple providers, please make sure to accept the first offer you get. The offers have strict deadlines after which the offer we be cancelled and your application is removed (and you will not get an apartment from the same provider at least in the same year). Worst thing is to become picky and hoping that the other organisation offers something better -> this is not likely.
      Sorry for the last rant, but people make this mistake all the time… I hope this helps :)

Unless I get a job when I get there (which I am hoping for, but I can’t predict) I ‘ll be living with the money on my bank account that I have been saving for the last 5 years. Does that mean I should write zero euros in everything (income, assets and grants)? Thank you for your help. It’s so hard to find good content about being a student in Finland. I’ll binge watch your channel.

    • @RoadtoFinnish
      @RoadtoFinnish  Před 4 lety

      Hey Nata and thank you so much for the positive feedback. I really appreciate it!
      To answer your question: you are absolutely correct. If you don't have a job or a steady source of income when you move to Finland, you should mark income as 0€. The same goes to assets and grants if those are 0€ as defined by Hoas.
      About work in Finland during your studies. Do note that the Finnish immigration office has some restrictions on working while studying. The restrictions are not that hard, but still good to take into account:
      *You are allowed work in Finland if the work is related to your studies*
      The residence permit for studies enables you to work without restrictions if your work is related to your degree. This means practical training and thesis work. You also have a right to have other jobs but the following restrictions apply:
      →You may only work for an average of 25 hours per week during the academic terms.
      →The number of working hours is not restricted on a weekly level. This means that you can adjust your weekly working hours during the academic term, as long as you work for 25 hours a week on average.
      →You can work without restrictions at the times when your educational institution offers no instruction.
      Source: migri.fi/en/studying-in-finland
      I would advice that you do not rely on getting a job at least during the first year of studies here. Job seeking for new students is in general not easy to start with. There are usually a large amount of vacancies in the service sector, but unfortunately the majority requires you to speak Finnish. This is an over simplification and I will cover these topics in more detail in future videos, but I want you to understand that finding a job here is not easy especially in the beginning.
      Again, I do really appreciate the positive feedback. This really keeps me going with this channel ❤️. Do let me know if you have any other questions or perhaps ideas for future videos.

      @RoadtoFinnish  Před rokem +1

      Hey and thanks so much for the questions. Also, huge congrats on being admitted to study in Finland - im sure you will have a wonderful time here!
      So to answer your questions, you will need to pay the student apartment provider a security deposit before you move in. With Hoas, this is a standard lump sum of 260 or 500 euro depending on the apartment: hoas.fi/en/applicants/deposit/ You will get this money back once you move out of the apartment (assuming that you have kept good care of the place and no fixes are needed). In terms of the payment methods, in Finland it is most common that these will be done using international bank transfers, so apartment providers like Hoas (or any private landlord for that matter) will not have a system to accept credit card payments. As a disclaimer, this information might not apply to all apartment providers, and is also subject to change in the future, but this is how things are at the time of this comment.
      You can read more about the security payments on this website: hoas.fi/en/applicants/deposit/

      Anyways, to answer your question. Student housing providers have different rules about applying for when you can start applying for your apartment. For example, Hoas (the example in this video) has a rule that you can apply for an apartment at earliest 4 months before you need to move in. This means that if your spring term starts in on January 1st, you should apply for a Hoas apartment on the 1st of September.
      👆As mentioned, these rules vary somewhat between housing providers and they should have this information on their website - most likely in the FAQ.

    2) In the list of available housing, they have just mentioned HOAS studios whereas Unihome studios have their locations as well, If I apply for HOAS studios will I be allotted a location near my campus?

    • @RoadtoFinnish
      @RoadtoFinnish  Před 4 lety +1

      Hey Rupesh and thanks for the questions! Also, congrats for being admitted! Love to hear great news from you amid all the crap that we are going through with Covid-19.
      To your questions:
      1. In my understanding you do not have to pay the tuition fee before applying for student apartments. Hoas and the other apartment providers simply need to know that you've been admitted in order for you to apply.
      2. No, there is no guarantee that you will be granted an apartment near the campus. Housing providers do always *try to* give you the best location possible, but this is dependent on so many factors (e.g. how late you apply, how many apartments are left in each area, which apartments you apply for etc...) that its impossible to promise the best location for each applicant. The thumb rule is that the earlier you apply, the more likely it is for you to get a nice location.
      Also, just wanted to reiterate: when you are eventually offered an apartment, make sure to accept the offer unless you already have a better offer on the table. Most student apartment providers will not offer one applicant with multiple apartments per application cycle and declining an apartment due to its location means that you will not be granted an apartment at least that year (or during a longer period).
      Also good to note that although Helsinki might seem like a large city on a map, all student apartments in the Helsinki metropolitan area are located in such a way that you can easily reach your campus with public transportation.
      I hope this answered your question 👍. Please let me know if you have anything else on your mind.

      @@RoadtoFinnish Hey, I just now tried submitting the form for guaranteed housing and it prevents me from submitting it saying that I have left the "tuition fee" field unchecked.
      There are two options under the tuition fee field:
      1) Yes I have paid
      2) No, I have been granted a scholarship
      I have asked for the tuition fee invoice and until I get it, I cannot pay the tuition fee.
      Am I missing something?

    Hei Oliver,
    What are the student accommodations provided by the university in Lahti?

      One option is to check out Lahden Talot. They have some student apartments available here: lahdentalot.fi/opiskelijalle/?lang=en

    Hi Oliver, Thanks for your informative video about student hostels. I like to move to finland for study with my family (including my husband and child ). Are there any student houses for the family we can apply for. If it is so do they includ with private bathroom and kitchen. And also want to know are there any classes conducted by the university to improve English that we can attend while studying. Thank you.

    • @RoadtoFinnish
      @RoadtoFinnish  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Darshana and thanks for the good questions. Yes, some student housing providers have family apartments. For example Hoas, the sponsor of this video, has family apartments to which you can only apply together with a spouse or a partner. Ive been living in such a family apartment with my girlfriend for the past 4 years. These are individual apartments so yes, each has their own bathroom and kitchen. Do note that Hoas only operates in the Helsinki metropolitan area, but there are similar providers in each of the large university cities in Finland.
      About English language classes, yes Finnish universities have excellent English courses that you can include to your degree. Most degrees also have at least one or two mandatory English courses that you have to take as a part of your language studies.
      I hope this answered your questions 👍.

    • @RoadtoFinnish
      @RoadtoFinnish  Před 2 lety

      Usually you cannot apply for one room for two people in Finland. This is often against the student apartment providers' rules. Still, the best option for you would be Hoas: hoas.fi/en/

    Hey can PhD researchers apply for HOAS housing?

    • @RoadtoFinnish
      @RoadtoFinnish  Před 3 lety

      PhD students can apply for Hoas apartments but PhD researchers and post-docs are not entitled to live in Hoas apartments. Also please note that even while PhD students are entitled to apply for apartments from Hoas, they still prioritise Bachelor's and Master's students. You can read more about this here: www.hoas.fi/en/applicants/frequently-asked-questions/frequently-asked-questions/faq-who-can-apply-for-apartment/
