    The Canon R5 Mark II launches in just a few days on July 17 - and Tony Northrup (via CanonRumors.com) has the leaked specs! Well, hopefully they're accurate specs.
    Here's what we think the R5 Mark II will look like. CanonRumors expects the price to be $3,999 (sdp.io/R52):
    45 Megapixels
    12 FPS stills with the mechanical shutter or 30 FPS stills with the electronic shutter
    up to 8K at 60 FPS video (probably raw internal)
    Eye-controlled autofocus point selection, like the Canon R3
    No EVF blackout
    Improved PixelShift for high-megapixel images
    Some illuminated buttons
    Autofocus to -8 EV
    Better battery life
    Shutter speed faster than 1/8000" with the electronic shutter
    up to 16 stops of dynamic range... WHAT?? I talk about this a lot in the video
    New IBIS modes.

    Re the possibility of 16 stops with software - how is this "smartphone technology never before offered by Canon" different from the HDR mode on my 70D from 2013 where 3 different exposures are captured as fast as possible and combined in camera ? I'm sure that a new camera would do it better, but isn't it basically the same thing ?

      I am sure it is basically bracketing. But older cameras couldn't do those really high burst rates so you would have to either use a tripod or align them in post.
      I guess what Canon is doing here is using electronic shutter to get a burst of lossy images of different exposures and stacking them. Canon sensors generally aren't known to have ISO invariance so using really high ISO and dropping it down to normal would benefit them even more.
      Another option would just to take a bunch of underexposed images at really high shutter speeds to recover highlights, and add up the shadows to get a normal exposure.
      A third option, I heard Canon has the ability to expose each pixel for different lengths, but I doubt this will look good if there is any motion blur going on.

    I’m looking forward to some of the subtle enhancements seen in Canon’s recent offerings - improved battery life, no 30min record limit, reduced rolling shutter, the ability to select slower burst shooting (R5 in electronic shutter is either Single shot or full 20fps, nothing in between!), maybe a quicker way to switch between photo & video like the switch on R6 ii.

  • @ziggggy53ify
    @ziggggy53ify Před měsícem +2

    About that Dynamic Range figure of 16? Almost certainly that's 'Video' dynamic range, not 'Still Image' dynamic range!
    The difference...
    Posted Still Image dynamic range is generally measured stopping at a black floor Signal-to-Noise-Ratio (SNR) of 1:1, where the black/shadow image data and noise data reach parity; i.e. image data and noise data are equal.
    Conversely, Posted Video dynamic range is generally measured stopping at a black floor Signal-to-Noise-Ratio (SNR) of 1:2, where the black/shadow noise data is *2 times* the image data.
    The reason?...
    In video we normally view a stream of image frames, and the human eye/brain interprets this as continuous. The effect is that the frames somewhat blur together, which helps to reduce the visual appearance of noise; we just don't perceive the noisiness as much.
    That's why video dynamic range is generally expressed as better than still image dynamic range on the same camera and in the same conditions.

    4:33 Also they misuse the term EV. It should be LV. LV measures the light. EV is just the combination of the shutter speed and the aperture. With ISO 100 you should expose a specific LV value with the same EV value.

    • @Nanookian
      @Nanookian Před měsícem

      See I’m not sure. Tony mentioned it’s a bad measure because of different lenses but I think that’s the point. It can do -8ev based on how much light the lens is gathering. Meaning it can work in darker environments if you have a faster lens. The measurement for effective AF is relative to the lens. Hence EV measurement and not LV.

He’s mentioned this over and over and is correct. Why can’t we lock our camera, even something as simple as a button combo to unlock would be very welcome. Id be happy with power on, and hitting FN1 3 times and ok on the back 1 to unlock or whatever combo we want, ability to register the camera serial with the manufacturer and a authentication to unlock it if we forget what the combo was leaving it on a shelf for 6 months. If there's a problem with a memory card its easy to swap to another card... if there's a problem with internal memory, thats likely to be an expensive repair. Also if you fill up the internal memory you can't swap it out to a "new card" if you're storing photos redundantly. I do wish they'd add security features though... would definitely pay for that, heck they could make it a subscription service like lojack or something...

    6:04 A pixel doesn't store light. The well capacity is a measure of how much charge can be stored, which only indirectly is a measure of how much light a pixel has "captured." Consult your favorite solid-state physics or modern semiconductor devices textbook for a fuller discussion.

    • @michaels3003
      @michaels3003 Před 29 dny

      The pixel does not exist in the physical world. Values of four photo sensors (RGGB) are combined (computationally) to create a pixel data set in the file. So "pixel" is a name of a group of four light sensors plus their color filters.

    The anti-theft sounds like a great idea on paper, and maybe it needs to start someplace, but how would it work in practice?
    You buy a new camera with some anti-theft device - some thief comes up and grabs it (or takes it from your car, whatever) then they run away. When they get home they open up the camera bag, realize they can't sell it, and throw it in the dumpster. You still don't have a camera and have to buy another one. Yes, it is nice to know that your images will not show up someplace but you are still going have the hassle of police reports, insurance claims, ordering a new camera etc.
    So... yes we need to get the ball rolling, but until all of the other non-anti-theft cameras are off the street EVERY camera is a target to get stolen.
    Maybe we could just focus on making it harder to sell stolen cameras?

    • @peteranders7106

    Not worth the upgrade for me. I’ve told people the current R5 competes with the Sony A1 and Sony people are offended. As someone who loves Sony as well, I tell people NOT to be offended just to know that most of you won’t notice the difference and neither will your clients at 45 vs 50 megapixels. Same is said for the Z9 and Z8. No one can tell the difference. You can’t tell the difference between stacked sensor vs non-stacked. And if you want to talk about rolling shutter, flicker and other things, just use the mechanical shutter and it eliminates that issue (and yes reduces the frame rate but no one cares). So these minor changes don’t mean anything to me. I might still get it because I need to update my back up camera and I could make this my primary and my current R5 my backup. But other than that, all these updates are non factors for me. And the R1 seems great, but the only thing that would interest me is if it’s 16 bit color depth.

    According to DXO Mark, the R5 has a dynamic range of 14.6EVs. It looks like you listed the DR of the 5DS-r instead by mistake.

    You out of all people should know not to compare manufacturer claimed dynamic range vs 3rd party tested as the methods used to test are drastically different. Find how much DR did Canon claim for the R5 and compare to the claim for the R5ii to get a more accurate number.

      Cannon stands no chance against Nikon especially in Video except for the millionth sec difference in irrelevant AF ...
      Try compare with Nikon s Lenses if you trust DxO mark ....canon s kicked out of the park .

    I disagree only in one point Tony:
    The suggestion for a fast internal memory, although it sounds great as an option, and it could be very useful if you’d forget to bring any card with you, it’s also a long term reliabilty issue. Flash memories wearout over time, and they tend to fail. You out of all people experienced it quite some times already and advocated that in your videos multiple times. If that would happen to the internal memory of the camera, it could render the camera usless. It would also be a quite expensive repair, compared to replacing a failed external CF Express or SD. It could also mean not having your camera as a professional for the time it’d need to be repaired. I’m guessing that’s the main reason most manufacturers avoid putting these kind of flash memories internally in their cameras. Other than that, I’m excited to see what’s going to be new in the R5 II, but I’m sticking with my R5 regardless. I bought it in January, knowing that the price drop was due to the II coming out soon, and at that time it was even rumored for that to be in May instead of July.
