Also, Does this recognize all the newer generations of Pokémon too (any or the ones after the first 152?) If so, I wonder if this would work by scanning a Pokémon on your phone's screen that you just caught on Pokémon Go....especially if It could recognize your sketched Gengar. This thing would have come in handy back when I used to play Pokémon Go, and all these random new Pokémon that felt like they didnt spend quite as much time thinking out their names and what they looked like .....since back in my day we only had 152 Pocket Monsters, a Gameboy Pocket, a monthly bill of over $100 worth of (AAA) batteries (or AA for the OG big Chungus Gameboy) and either the Red/Blue Gameboy game cartridge of Pokémon... towards the end we eventually got that wild crazy electric mouse that followed you around with it's lightning bolt tail in the Yellow game....and a 10 foot long cable so we could connect our Gameboy with a friend at recess to battle them or trade Pokémon. (Which I believe became less popular once people figured out you could just copy the save file from someone like myself copy of the game who had "caught them all" by using the Gameshark Gameboy adapter...which actually would be super useful about now for when you need to replace the battery inside a Gameboy game cartridge since once the battery inside a Gameboy cartridge died....you'd lose your entire saved game files of hundreds of hours of gameplay. (Now apparently there's all these crazy jewel and precious metal versions 0f the game...and about 7 generations of random Pokémon that have some of the most random crazy names.) At least the original 152 had fairly decent names where you could usually guess what the Pokémon was if you heard the name since we had stuff like : "Ekans" = "Snake written backwards" "Arbok" = "Kobra written backwards, kinda like King -Cobra combined so it started with a K.

You should add locked entries you can scroll through and have it save the entries of Pokémon you scan. That way you can fill the pokedex full of Pokémon you see irl.
Considering they already have a bunch of the mini figures around this really is a genius idea for a toy. It would need to do more to hold interest tho, like maybe link to the games somehow.
If the code and stuff for this gets released (And if the creator gives the green light for people to mod it) it probably wouldn’t be too hard to code that functionality in. Just assign an on/off type value to each Pokémon, and have it switch to on when it recognizes a Pokémon. I’d have to know what language it uses before looking into the exact method, though. But it would probably only take a day or two.
