Jimmy Stewart is amazing in Destry. I certainly talked about it, sure I did it in Jimmy month!
Arsenic wasn't supposed to be released in '44, the War connection was an accident. There was a stipulation it wouldn't premiere till the Broadway run ended...no-one knew it would take years! The film was shot in late 1941. There's an amazing Boris Karloff joke that you need to know the behind the scenes of story to get - kinda cool to see 4th wall stuff back then. Cary also jokes about the grave of Archibald Leach...his real name. A wonderfully modern script that did a lot more than use the same script.

You most certainly did, me lad!
And good to know about Arsenic! That's an absolutely crazy background. Such a delight!

First, LOVE the t-shirt. Also, you should have definitely kept the light going out during the Haxan chat. Love the movie but the way. 😀
Arsenic and Old Lace is a great suggestion. I just watched it over the last few days. Mishima is fantastic with some of the best packaging. Memories of Murder took me two watches to connect but now, love it. Can never go wrong with Wes Anderson-- big fan.
Great video and great picks, as always. Love ya. ❤️❤️

Late comment! Been buying Criterion since 1999. Good recs and I need to finally see Destry and Haxan. I picked up Inland Empire plus upgraded my old DVDs of Three Women and Belle de Jour. Now you've tempted me to place another order before the sale ends.

Saw Lost Highway after you recommended it here and man what a movie. I loved it and now hope to buy it before the Barnes and Noble Criterion Sale ends. Thank you.

Just discovered your channel, this is the first video of yours I'm watching, and you hold up Memories of Murder, one of only two Criterions I'm buying during sale! I just received it in the mail today, a rare blind buy for me, and you top if off with enticing review, so now super anxious to watch this weekend on movie night. Love Grand Budapest Hotel, but my favorite Anderson film by far is Moonrise Kingdom. New subscriber, enjoyed video.

I really got into film (and the Criterion Collection) last year, so I’m playing catch up, but so far my favorites are:
    1. Red Desert
    2. The Red Shoes
    3. The Seventh Seal
Those 3 are the absolute greats. Other really good ones are:
    4. 12 Angry Men
    5. Portrait of a Lady on Fire
    6. Fail Safe
    7. Wings of Desire
    8. Rashomon
    9. Dragon Inn
    10. Repulsion
    11. Black Narcissus
The only Criterion film I regret buying is Dressed to Kill (I was a horror fan before I was a “cinema” fan, so when I heard that there was a slasher film in the Criterion Collection I bought it immediately. I regret that. It has aged very poorly in many ways, and also just doesn’t seem like it is close to the level of quality I expect from Criterion in general).
I also want to mention that Mother is not in the Criterion Collection, but I think it is Bong Joon Ho’s best work by a significant margin.

Memories of Murder and Rashomon are really great picks! Both of those are amongst my favorites of all time, would certainly consider them essential.
I might be one of the few that didn’t really get anything from Budapest Hotel, not a fan. But I did love Fantastic Mr. Fox!
Might pick up some of these others! Thanks for the recommendations!

Hey Nathan - Love these selections. Arsenic and Old Lace was such as awesome discovery. Mishima for me is a masterpiece. Two selections for me would be The Cranes are Flying for the cinematography alone. City Lights as well one of the best movies of all time. Cheers and happy 4th!

    • @blu-rayswithnathanjones
      @blu-rayswithnathanjones  Před rokem +1

I like that you went from silent to modern with your selections. My silent pick is The Phantom Carriage. I watched it last year I think and it blew me away. Sam Fuller’s Pickup on South Street is an essential for me. It’s one I watched a lot when I was younger and I still love it.
Then I’ll go with Antonioni’s Red Desert. The Ascent, which is an amazing Russian war movie. The director was married to the director who made Come and See. Highly recommended it.
I’ll also choose a Lynch title: Eraserhead. Then I’ll end with The Virgin Suicides, which is one of my top ten favorites of all time.

Awesome choices Nathan 😀🍿🎶 ‘Rashomon’ is a film I did quite like on first watch; but I reckon I will like it more on rewatch for sure; I got the BFI Blu-Ray edition for a very good price mate; will revisit it shortly soon 😀👍 Grand Budapest is in my Top 25 films of all time; the movie that defies Wes Anderson as a director and whilst I have been mixed on his last two outings with French Dispatch & ‘Asteroid City’; I still think he’s a phenomenal director and have to thank him truly for making one of my fav films of all time 😊🏨🍿🎶 ‘Lost Highway’ is very solid Nathan; Lynch is one of my fav directors; ‘Blue Velvet’ is my fav film of his 👌 Bong-Joon Ho is such an incredible filmmaker and pleased I bought that Curzon Boxset with 7 of his films in; I have loved every single one of them; also ‘Okja’ which does have a Criterion 👍 Great picks again man; you have such great taste in Film; keep up the excellent work 😀🍿🙌🎶

My essential Criterion release is the Signifyin' Works of Marlon Riggs set. Brilliant, really important filmmaker who made documentaries on the subjects of the Black gay male experience, the history of anti-Black stereotypes in America, and the portrayal of Black characters on TV. Really exciting, vital stuff.

Love Criterion July! Mishima is a wonderful choice, had to double dip when Criterion added it to their collection. You’re right on about the packaging. That alone is worth the price, even if it wasn’t at 1/2 price. I’ll be picking up Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence (Spine #535), Robinson Crusoe on Mars (Spine #404), I was drooling for Franco Zeffirelli’s, Romeo and Juliet. I’m very disappointed with Criterion when I found out that they did a 4K print but only released it on 1080 Blu-ray. Shame. I’ll be holding out or the 4K, are you listening Kino Lorber? The only thing that can rival Criterion July is Criterion November! Even willing to double dip again for The Princess Bride on 4K!
