    Those are some great titles, Huck. Criterion has a lot of mainstream titles that have been entered into the Film Registry and should be taken as seriously as any foreign film. Like most of the Boutique labels, Criterion has brought a lot of classic movies back to life. I just watched Broadcast News last weekend and it’s excellent. I thought that The Blob was fun with Indiana Legend Steve McQueen.

    Criterion also had about 300 titles on laser disc that were extremely mainstream and have never been released on DVD, Blu Ray or 4K through them, John Carpenter’s Halloween being one example.

      @HucksPopCultureCafe  Před 2 lety +1

      Wow!! I didn't know that Halloween was on laserdisc Criterion. How have they not added that one to their DVD/Blu Ray/4K collection? Well, at least Scream Factory put out those nice sets which look great and are loaded.

      @excelsiormoviereviews Před 2 lety

      @@HucksPopCultureCafe yes, Criterion is finally expanding their Horror titles and Halloween needs to be re-released on 4K and Blu Ray.

      Spine #247. Wiki has a full list of about 380 Criterion laserdiscs and you wouldn’t believe how mainstream those titles were and how many James Bond films were in that collection

    Nice video! I would have chosen scanners and Night of the Living Dead. War of the Worlds is excellent also and I hear there is a potential 4K coming out but not by Criterion. I really love the movie things to come by H G Wells. Such incredible film for its time.

    SPINE #1000 - GODZILLA: The Showa Era Films - 1954-1975
    Excellent set of 15 Godzilla films(17 if you count alternate versions) with great historical significance to genre filmmaking.
    I hope and pray for an eventual "4K UHD upgrade" of this release, perhaps for the 70th anniversary of the original Godzilla film in 2024.

    Great idea for a Criterion video Huck but you forgot Fred "Mr Wonder Years himself" Savage is in Princess Bride. Just saying.

    Things like ET, Rocky, Back To The Future and Raiders Of The Lost Ark dont appear on the catalogue and hopefully they never will. Although Robocop and Armageddon are there, people need to explore out there and find out more.

    If I can see strings for special effects that would usually be my clue to stick with the DVD. Would much rather keep immersion in a fictitious act than have that ruined by picture clarity. One reason I do purposefully buy dad's over blu rays still, especially for old movies. Animated, comedies, and classics still get me buying the DVD, depending on the title still though

    • @HucksPopCultureCafe
      @HucksPopCultureCafe  Před 2 lety

      I can dig that. If it helps, the strings aren't noticeable all the time, just in a couple of shots.

    • @willroberts336
      @willroberts336 Před 2 lety

      In this case, and I own both the DVD of several years ago & the Criterion Blu-ray, the wires are MUCH less noticeable on the Blu-ray. Because the technicolor image was restored properly, the effects sequences are much improved & the colors really pop. It is a vastly better presentation. If you like ‘50’s sci-fi, this is a must have. Great supplements too.

    My pick would be The Silence if the Lambs. It doesn’t get any more “mainstream” than that.

    • @HucksPopCultureCafe
      @HucksPopCultureCafe  Před 2 lety +1

      That is a good one. Don’t have it yet. There’s a 4K by Kino Lorber I may get instead. Haven’t decided on which one I want yet.

    Is it unfortunate that Armageddon 1998 got bad reviews from critics especially since that is part of the criterion collection

    • @HucksPopCultureCafe
      @HucksPopCultureCafe  Před 2 lety

      Yea I thought of adding The Rock and Armageddon but they are only on DVD and people seem to have issues with Michael Bay being on Criterion. But those are great releases for sure. Got them both!
