Second only to 'The curtains are f*king blue', this is an amazing representation of teachers making something out of nothing when 'teaching' us to look at stories symbolically.
That just shows that you missed the point. The point is that if an author chooses to drawn attention to a specific element it probably has a meaning, and a key part of critical thinking is trying to figure out that meaning. The author could have said "There were curtains in the room," but they didn't, they specifically said blue curtains. The significance should be pretty obvious, blue is the color of sadness. Saying "Yeah, this is stupid, the curtains are blue and that's it," is something that people think makes them look smart, but actually makes them look profoundly stupid, like those people who say "Schools shouldn't teach math, they should teach things that matter in the real world, like how to make your resume," without realizing that pretty much every job requires math, even the trades like construction, and that if you need a class to teach you how to type out a single page resume... Well, that certainly explains why you hated math in school.
*I feel like Family Guy started the revolution for the cultural demise of American Beauty. American Beauty came out in 1999 and is generally a very overrated movie. But at the time, it was critically applauded by everyone. Seth MacFarlane was one of the very first to see its bullshit and go against the massive grain and call it out. It’s like the Holden Caulfield of movies. And it’s so ironic that Kevin Spacey, the good guy, was in this movie playing a character who resisted statutory rape of another character… just to commit statutory rape in REAL LIFE on a young man. Obviously, Kevin Spacey is a big reason for American Beauty’s cultural demise since he is generally loathed today and his public image has taken a huge hit since his scandal. Shit, Family Guy even had a Kevin Spacey gag about a young man escaping him. You can trust Family Guy to be on the right side of history on many social topics.
