I’m so glad I watched this again. It’s taken several times watching to finally drown out all of the other voices. This is gold. It makes so much sense. I’ve wasted a year waiting to lose weight on high fat low protein keto/carnivore. I should have listened to my common sense and videos like this. Thank you so much. And then there is me, and all those like me. 7 months very high fat (80/20) clean beefy carnivore. Lost 42 pounds and now gealthy BMI for first time in 24 years! Maintaining weight is easy. Feel good mentally, physically, spiritually and emotionally. Have healed numerous serious health issues, put autoimmune in remission, feel amazing. Well enough now to join the gym and start working on strength stability and flexibility.
BOTH sides of this debate are right some of the times and in specific situations.
I do not expect to be high fat forever.
The only med I have left (!!!) Is the lowest dose of armour thyroid. Good fat is very helpful in restoring hormones and a host of other health issues.
My health was always far more important than my weight.
Yet I am now a terrific BMI.
I am watching this because I am ready to cycle in some low fat high protein days when going to the gym.
Eating keto/carnivore really should be viewed a spectrum, or even better to me...a toolbox.
Because I haven't made one "professional" or influencer my "guru"
I pay attention, and have a notebook filled with, ALL of the strategies they have had success with.
None of these people are MY doctors, or yours. They do not know YOUR body/health issues, exactly what you are eating etc.
Based on my experiments so far, I believe there is no ONE WAY to be keto/carnivore even for me! I am glad I am not stuck in a tiny restrictive way of eating.
I am glad to have so many metabolic "shake up" strategies to keep my body in good health. I am glad I know that should I get a cancer diagnosis or show signs of dementia I will have myself in therapeutic ketosis PDQ.
I have a health toolbox now, and I am grateful for the different "experts" sharing.

If you're fat, don't eat more fat. It's what general wisdom has been saying all along. Keto wants you to eat more fat to keep you satiated so you don't snack and eat too much. It's cutting out the carbs (eating less fruit, vegetables) that's the problem. I've been using more fat (butter) to eat less between meals and late evening, but I'm now not losing any more weight so I'm going to follow this now.

    • @debiwillis9045

The idea of more fat is just the first week to get fat adapted then cut back on fat and add more protein

    • @sidneybuckaloo
      @sidneybuckaloo Před 2 měsíci +4

I wouldn’t say it doesn’t work. It’s worked for thousands of people. Adding more fat doesn’t always make you fat. Look at the stories of people who it helps. Just because one thing works for one person doesn’t mean that it works for another. High fat, moderate protein or high protein, moderate fat.

Everyone learns differently, & translating the information being offered is often of personal benefit. We might consider that not everyone is comfortable or adept at teaching in the same ways we might prefer to learn, which is when it's helpful for the learner to adapt the opportunity. =)

After being carnivore for 6 months after a diagnosis of insulin resistant, I get it! (I think). Im 74 years old female. I’m also now 105 pounds. Lost 20 pounds. Went zero carb. Med protein. Med fat. No calorie counting. After using your macro formula, I was very close to recommended numbers. That was a fluke cause I simply couldn’t eat the amt of protein and fat that carnivore demanded so I cut them back drastically. Now I will keep to the protein grams of the calculator, not go over the fat grams, stay no more than 20 carbs in the form of veg/salad not grain/junk, and do more exercise. My hair was thinning and falling b4 I ever went carnivore but now it’s worse. I will take electrolytes hoping low sodium was the problem. Am I on the right track? 🤞
And hardest cut back on my 2 cups of coffee.
Excellent presentation. Very clear. Easy to understand now. ❤

I was recently in a ketovore/carnivore FB group that was always tell people to eat like 80-90% fat, to the point where they were starting to sound cultish. They also completely ignored the laws of thermodynamics and TDEE rule. So many post about how a someone had been on the diet for years with no WL and they were told to eat more fat and not track intake. This is something I have see not just in that group but in the keto/ketovore/carnivore crowd in general, and it really is a disservice to people who have really struggling to drop body fat.

I have such a hard time losing and now I understand the main reason why. My sister is around 340 lbs (3 years older than I) and her Glucose stays around 85. I haven’t understood how this can be when she is around 100 lbs more than I. She is so resistant to weight loss, as well. She gets so discouraged as to what to do to lose the weight. Everybody has a different body so the same plan doesn't work for everybody. One obvious thing is that it is not sustainable to go in extended fasts as the main way to lose weight because you are going to gain it all back when you start to eat again. It's better to follow a program that would be sustainable on the long term. Since fasts seem to work for you, try maintaining just a narrow eating window daily, no more than 6 hours. Then make a conscious effort to do at least 10000 steps a day. Also add strength training, particularly during your PSMF days. You can start with something as simple as using an exercise bike that has resistance bands so you have to make more of an effort to pedal and are building muscle mass. You can also follow videos in which exercises are done with resistance bands. You don't need to work out like a maniac because you don't want to injure yourself

I am new to this Keto lifestyle. Fifteen years ago I learned of the ketogenic diet as my son who was 11 at the time started having seizures. I considered the diet for him but ended up going with medications to control his seizures. I have realized that I am insulinate resistant and have realized my need to go on a strict healthy ketogenic diet. I have sooooo much to learn!! !!Thank you for helping me learn more of what I need to know

"May have to watch it again..." I watched it three times and still only understood about 1/3 of what he said. I am so confused. I started Carnivore because my Dr put me on very low oxalates. ( And she was right. I don't seem to be able to digest oxalates. I just thought I had Candida. ) Until then I had no idea what an oxalate was. But I also have hypothyroid, low adrenals, fibromyalgia and hashimotos but have histamine reactions to the meds so I stopped taking them and was trying to heal on my own with Carnivore/High Fat. But I have put on so much weight with Hashimoto and Carnivore doesn't let me lose the unhealthy weight. I would like to do the protein fast you recommend but just one hamburger patty has 38 grams of fat so it seems I would have to starve to follow it. So confusing.

I still have fat around the middle. Been keto for 5 years, why are my Tri's still high at 112. I don't ever eat sugar. Keep carbs at 15. Eat mostly meat, a few good veggies, good fats. Fast for at least 20 hours. Don't get hungry between meals. Very slow loser! I'm 72, been heavy since 9 yo. I've lost 35 pounds in 5+ years. I listened 2 times, great video. I'm doing a HIIT class twice a week. FEEL GREAT!

Thank you very much Maria & Craig for sharing this awesome knowledge !!! It was rich and very informative-teaching, loved it ❤️ very worth sharing with my keto friend’s that think I eat too much protein. Thank you for explaining why I was only a tiny bit successful on Keto, despite being obsessive and not at all successful on ketovoire or extended fasting. Lost 70lbs on Dukan diet but stalled and fell off, better understanding of mechanisms now. Still unsure what the body does with excess proteins if there is ever any? Respect to you two and Dr Neiman!

I have too eat enough fat because if I don’t I will be constipated. Carnivore for almost 4 months. I eat 2 times a away 1 pound of ground and 12 eggs. I have not lose weight yet. I have 20 pounds to loose. I have fasted most of my 50 years of life. I believe my body is healing now. What advice you have for me?

    • @MariaEmmerich
      @MariaEmmerich  Před rokem

You aren't losing weight because you are adding too much fat. First, get your macros right (be sure to read the notes at the top of the calculator) mariamindbodyhealth.com/calculator/
Next, your colon doesn't need fat to go poo. It needs sodium. Electrolytes are non-negotiable on a low carb diet: mariamindbodyhealth.com/how-to-balance-electrolytes/

Ooohhh good to know about electrolytes and BMs! I wish there was an easy electrolyte something to take that doesn’t taste like salt water. I tried LMNT, which did taste good, but my body held onto so much water with it. I gained 2 pounds every day I took it and my body swelled up so much I couldnt bend my fingers or knees! Is there a pill or some other suggestion? I take ozonated magnesium at night now and also have magnesium glycinate (but I’m not consistent with that) but I don’t do anything else. How do we know if it’s salt, magnesium or potassium we need?

Lots to unpack; watched and repeated at least 3 times, finally got it. The body plays a symphony between diet fuel (carbs, protein) and stored ones.
What about protocol for losing visceral fat? I was 75kg, now down to seemingly stuck 64kg.

It's all about getting your macros right and prioritizing LEAN animal protein. I can calculate your custom macros and give dietary guidance for you: keto-adapted.com/product/macro-assessment/

Mahalo for the explanation on morning glucose levels. I had never heard it explained like that before and it makes so much sense. It’s just further proof that I am on the right path. I have much fat to lose and it is really stubborn (I’ve gained and lost and gained even more over 23 years) so I know it will take some time.

  • @slowburnpersonaltrainingst4586

    Great info!
Drs. Eades, my co-authors, in their books Protein Power, have been saying this for a long time: Don't eat too much fat and make sure you're eating adequate protein for your lean body mass.

I eat about 10-20 total carbs per day. I tend to do a bit better on a more carnivore diet. I take a green powder (4 carbs per serving) and I do well. I personally lose more weight eating a little lore protein and a little less fat than what most people on keto eat. I think it’s just a matter of everyone’s body chemistry is different. I’m a 50 yo post-menopausal woman

If you are post-menopausal then you definitely want more protein. Please watch this video:

I needed this information so much! Perfect timing, was ready to give up on everything but this is exactly what was happening to my blood sugar when I decided to go Carnivore because Keto wasn't helping me to lose weight although I had some good benefits with mood and skin etc. It scared me to see my blood sugar go up even though I was starting to see changes with my body composition. This was the best explanation I've heard in the past over two years since starting this journey! Thank you!

Omg thank you. I’m so grateful for discovering you on TT and then just hearing this explanation and the other about the keto food I was eating which isn’t a lot - I stopped when I slowly gained body fat and going thru menopause but now I understand what happened. I started natural stuff for menopause after 3 failed attempted w different types of HRT blah blah blah this will help me kick start leaning back out thank you❤
